When Life Gives You Extreme Cold, Bundle Up and Check Your Neighbors!

Environment Canada - Extreme Cold Warning - Health Risks from Cold - Public Safety - Snow Shoveling - Winter Weather

Extreme cold warnings have swept across Canada & it's time to check in on your pals, pets, and warm up with hot cocoa! 🥶☕

Canada is bracing for a bitter blast of cold as extreme cold warnings have been issued across eastern Ontario, the Prairies, and parts of Quebec. With temperatures expected to plummet below freezing and wind chills making it feel even colder—brrrr!—it’s time to keep an eye on those around you! If you notice your fingers and toes changing colors or feel symptoms like chest pain and muscle weakness, it might be time to head inside (but save that winter wonderland selfie for another time). Please, we beg you: check on your friends and family, and make sure to throw a hearty ‘hi’ to your poor, frozen neighbors!

As the cold front makes its way through, Weyburn is in for a major chill, with daytime temperatures dipping to a frigid -28°C. Coupled with wind gusts up to 50 kilometers per hour, the wind chill will turn this already frosty day into a teeth-chattering -43°C. Canadians across the Prairies and Ontario are advised to stay cozy indoors and keep their flannel pajamas handy—preferably with a matching hat, because why not be fashionable while enduring hypothermia risk?

The forecast isn’t serving much relief in the upcoming days either. With extreme cold conditions stretching through Toronto and Ontario until midweek, residents can expect wind chills to hover between -20°C to -25°C. Now, that’s a chill that even Tim Hortons hot chocolate will struggle to warm up! You might even want to invest in one of those snazzy unflattering snowsuits that immediately turn everyone into a walking marshmallow; we’ve all seen it in kids, right? Well, who says we can’t bring that joyous fashion back? If you’re stuck outside, be ready to channel your inner adventurer—but please wear your gear and stay safe!

As this arctic air mass continues to affect communities, it’s worth reminding ourselves about the importance of looking out for pets as well as people. Pets can suffer from frostbite and hypothermia just like humans, so make sure those furry friends aren’t left out in the cold. Consider a warm blanket, a cuddly fire, or if you’re feeling extra generous, how about a homemade doggie sweater? Plus, remember that hilarious old proverb: "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Well, when life gives you extreme cold, bundle up, stay hot, and make sure everyone you know is doing the same!

Fun fact: Did you know that Canada has the second largest landmass in the world, which means ample room for all sorts of crazy winter temperatures? And, if you’re fidgeting with your phone to look up the weather while being ultra-cautious, how about this: the coldest temperature ever recorded in Canada was a chilling -63°C in Snag, Yukon, back in 1947—talk about an icebox! Stay warm, Canada!
