Winter Wonderland: When the Only Thing Moving is Your Imagination!

Education - School Buses - Timmins - Transportation - Winter Weather

❄️🚍 School bus cancellations might have snowed in some students, but winter fun is just getting started! 🌨️🎉

Winter is here, and with it comes the delightful chaos of snow and ice. This week, Kirkland Lake and surrounding regions are experiencing a familiar story as winter weather leads to school bus cancellations. From Kirkland Lake to Hearst, including the bustling areas of Timmins and further, students are feeling the bite of winter as their usual ride to school is replaced by a snow day excitement—or a remote learning day, for some. After all, there’s nothing quite like looking out the window at a heavy snowfall, knowing that all is quiet on the transportation front.

In Timmins, Matheson, Iroquois Falls, and Cochrane, the North East Tri-Board Student Transportation team made the call to cancel school bus services this morning. Parents scrambled—some cheering for a well-deserved break from school routines, while others juggled shift work or planned playdates in the snow instead. Meanwhile, for some students, buses are still on the move, albeit with some adjustments. Those on the G806 and G808 routes from Croatia, Southshore, and Eden Township will have to hop onto a transfer bus to reach the mailboxes—talk about a scenic detour!

But what does this mean for the kids excited to see their friends? While the buses may not be running, schools remain open, ready to accommodate students who make it in despite the chilly conditions. My Kap-Hearst has confirmed that while transportation has faced significant challenges, schools continue to provide a warm, dry, and snowy oasis for learning. Let's face it, who wouldn’t want to go to school and get a day of snow-themed lessons instead?

For those missing their daily dose of winter activity, here’s an interesting thought: North East Ontario is no stranger to snowy days, and locals have been concocting creative ways to have fun even on snow days. From making snowmen that resemble Canadian icons to epic snowball fights, winter brings out the imagination in all of us! Did you know that the largest snowman ever built was over 122 feet tall? Now that’s a winter record worth chasing! With all this snow, grab your boots and enjoy the fluffy wonderland—in every way possible!
