Maple Leafs report cards: Matt Murray injury looms large as Leafs ... (The Athletic)

After a fluke collision with Lucas Raymond, Murray exited with an injury in the Leafs' 5-2 loss to the Red Wings.

A rush chance from Dylan Larkin trickled through his legs a few minutes later, but the puck stayed out of Toronto’s net. However, he set up Bunting for a good chance to start the second, and his pairing spent most of his shifts in the offensive zone. Kerfoot had a partial breakaway 12 minutes in, but he couldn’t beat Nedelkovic, and the Red Wings took the lead seconds later. The Leafs generated plenty of chances during his minutes, but they couldn’t find a way to capitalize. Liljegren was zipping the puck around in the opening forty minutes, and made a strong defensive play on an opposing two-on-one halfway through the second. A few minutes later, he blocked a shot on a high-danger chance from the slot. [Red Wings](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/redwings/) defender closed his hand on the puck in the crease. Bunting moved up to both the top line and top power-play unit with Marner out, and he stood out in the second period after a quiet first. He created a terrific rush chance in the final minutes, then had an outstanding chance in the middle of the slot, but couldn’t find his way onto the scoresheet on either occasion. Nylander set Kerfoot up for a partial breakaway 12 minutes in, but his line didn’t spend a ton of time in the offensive zone in the first. [Toronto](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/leafs/)’s power play was excellent, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a couple of big mistakes and a lack of five-on-five scoring. [Ilya Samsonov](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/ilya-samsonov-g7s6ToavWetg6cvR/) was forced to play over forty minutes on the second half of a back-to-back, and while he wasn’t tested often, he continued to look sharp.

Monday Morning Leafs Report: Another bad break for Matt Murray ... (The Athletic)

Any possibility of Murray usurping Samsonov for the starting job in Game 1 against Tampa disappears if he misses time with an injury.

[back in the fall](https://theathletic.com/3725319/2022/11/16/maple-leafs-michael-bunting/), was exactly the one that’s now confronting the Leafs: What would happen to Bunting’s production and effectiveness if he wasn’t playing with Matthews? [Ondrej Kase](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/ondrej-kase-7Rjb8ImRqFmeibCS/). [Mitch Marner](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/mitch-marner-4ruZuzgBxxa43HbV/). On Sunday night, Bunting drew an embellishment call after he was cross-checked by [Jake Walman](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/jake-walman-LZHnJvcTLmEJTZsi/) and a 10-minute misconduct later for his involvement in a late-period scrum. The Leafs, and Keefe specifically, ought to ensure the minutes are kept in check too — with Marner and Matthews in particular. And yet, this still looks like a good example of why it’s best to wait on extensions for everyone but the stars. [William Nylander](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/william-nylander-TTskHMdFinH0gM1n/) so goes, so goes Tavares to some degree. It’s conceivable to see him end up alongside O’Reilly whenever he returns, though that doesn’t feel like a great fit either, what with O’Reilly’s likely role as a third-line defensive specialist (if he ends up there and not with Tavares). “John, he’s a guy that generates a lot of his shots and his scoring chances in the middle of the ice — they come in the slot, they come in and around the net. “(The collision was) so unexpected so there’s no opportunity for him to brace (for) impact.” Murray was making only his 26th start of the season — the same number of games he’s missed to injury this season, including a 14-game absence early on with an adductor issue. Murray was tested for a concussion, according to Keefe — though the Leafs coach did not reveal what the results of that test were.

"I don't know," the 31-year-old said. "I would love the option, yeah," he said. The Leafs have now failed to convert on all seven of their penalty shot attempts this season. "In terms of how he has been officiated, Kyle will deal with that with the league." It just got away on him as he got too tight to the goalie." Brodie and Justin Holl – have scored in the shootout in the NHL. "Kampfer was excited for a chance to go. "He has to find his way through that. The Leafs have a day off on Monday. Bunting kicked away the stick of Moritz Seider when the Wings defenceman tried to retrieve it. They also didn't use the word "precautionary" as they have for recent minor injuries. "There's no opportunity for him to brace or sense that it's coming," said captain John Tavares.

As they play out these painfully meaningless games, the Toronto Maple Leafs' greatest hope is for pain-free meaningless games. That wasn't the case Sunday ...

Any time you're a player like that, you're relying on your wingers, and you're relying on the other players to make a lot of that happen,” Keefe explains. “Mitch wants to play every game,” Keefe says. Hard for [his] family, yeah, first one, and hard for team,” tandem mate Samsonov said. “It’s hard for us. “A lot of his shots and his scoring chances come in the middle of the ice, come in the slot, come in around the net. He's the last of the players acquired near the deadline to miss a game. He had allowed at least four goals in seven of his last eight starts, and had allowed two goals on seven shots before the Raymond run-in. The two goals Murray allowed were stoppable shots from a distance, but largely the result of Leafs turnovers. It was the first time McCabe had been scratched as a Leaf. He hurt his adductor in the morning skate on Oct. The Leafs can't pass first-place Boston, and none of the wild-card teams can catch third-place Tampa Bay. 15 and missed the next 14 games, and tweaked his ankle in warm-ups on Jan. The only thing up for grabs is home-ice advantage, with the Leafs holding down that position at the moment by four points. Keefe had rested some of his star players against a team that is at the very outskirts of the wild-card conversation. But Dylan Larkin's second of the night put restored a two-goal lead, and he salted the game away while completing his hat trick into an empty net. They made a couple of mistakes and their goaltender made saves. “It's a game that obviously we don't play well enough to get a favourable result,” said Keefe.
