With the Artemis missions, NASA aims to investigate more of the lunar surface with the plan to build a sustainable presence on the moon.

This is about investing in the future. Canada and NASA have been working together since the early 1960s and the headiest days of the U.S. “This is more than just about going back to the moon. The Canadian astronaut corps is also made up of test pilot and Air Force Lt.-Col. have added up to this moment where a Canadian is going to the moon with our international partnership, and it is glorious,” Hansen said Monday. David Saint-Jacques, 53, an astrophysicist and medical doctor from Montreal has been the only member of the group who’s already been to space. The end goal is to go to Mars by the late 2030s. This is humanity’s crew.” “This is their crew. The return trip alone will take about four days. Astronauts last visited the moon in December 1972, closing out the Apollo program. The exact distance is yet to be determined, but the unmanned Artemis I which circled the moon in 2022, travelled 2.1 million kilometres on its 25-day mission and reached a maximum distance from Earth of 432,210 kilometres. There it will circle the moon — potentially travelling further away from the earth than any human in history ever has — before returning to Earth for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean of the U.S. The Artemis II is scheduled to launch in November 2024.

No Canadian – no one from any country other than the United States – has ever ventured so far from home.

“This is a major, major step in Canada’s human exploration program because, let’s face it, Canada will be the second country to have an astronaut go on a lunar mission,” Mr. One of the future Artemis missions will include a second Canadian lunar astronaut, who will fly to Gateway as part of Canada’s contribution. And given the nature of this mission, it’s all but guaranteed that the attention will be there. Garneau found out he was to be the first to go in March of that year, he had only been an astronaut for three months. Hansen, like his crewmates, has had more time to consider the public attention that will come as training and preparations commence for Artemis II. Hansen and his crewmates will be treated to the sight of Earth, by then almost 400,000 kilometres away, with the moon in the foreground. That is the objective of Artemis III and other missions that will follow, tentatively scheduled for later this decade. “It will enable us to do so much new science on the moon,” Dr. After launching from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the spacecraft will perform a series of burns to transfer from a lower to a higher orbit. First selected to be an astronaut in 2009, he will be taking Canada’s space program to new heights when he sets out on a lunar flight as early as November, 2024. Once en route to the moon, the mission will focus on human operations and life support as it traces a long, narrow figure-8 around Earth’s satellite. Now he will help start a new chapter for the astronaut program, not just in Canada but in the U.S.

Artemis 2 will orbit the moon with a crew of four, including the first woman and the first person of colour to visit Earth's satellite.

Canada has one additional guaranteed spot on future Artemis crew assignments, meaning a Canadian might also become the first non-American to set foot on the moon. It will be the first time humans have walked on the surface since the departure of Apollo 17 in December 1972. Artemis 2 will be similar to the flight of Apollo 8, which sent astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Bill Anders — all still living — on humanity’s first trip around the moon in 1968. Apollo 14 featured new fliers Ed Mitchell and Stu Roosa, as well as Alan Shepard, who had previously spent all of 15 minutes in space on Freedom 7, America’s first manned launch. Hansen added: “A Canadian is going to the moon with out international partnership and it is glorious. On Monday, NASA and the Canadian Space Agency jointly announced the crew of Artemis 2, which will return humans to the lunar region for the first time since the Apollo program wound down, more than 50 years ago.
