Blue Beetle, starring George Lopez, Susan Sarandon, and Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña as the hero, is ready for its summer debut in the DC Films Universe.
In the form of a blue, metal scarab, the device bonds with Jamie, introducing itself as Khaji Da and bestowing him Iron Man-style powers. The second was Ted Kord, a genius inventor and self-made industrialist who styled himself as a wise-cracking superhero out of love for the Justice League and their good deeds. The new trailer covers much of Jaime’s movie origin story — a strange encounter with a piece of alien technology, a close knit family group, and a threatening presence of corporate power.

He’s [Blue Beetle](https://www.indiewire.com/t/blue-beetle/) (AKA Jaime Reyes), played in the big summer blockbuster by Xolo Maridueña, best known for Netflix’s “Cobra Kai.” The character of Blue Beetle was first created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner for the 2006 event “Infinite Crisis.” An ordinary teenager from a Mexican-American family, Jaime’s life unexpectedly changes when his friend Jenny (Bruna Marquezine) entrusts him with a strange extraterrestrial mechanical scarab. “Blue Beetle” was initially announced in 2021 as an exclusive streaming film for HBO Max. George Lopez, Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, and Damián Alcázar play Jaime’s family and friends in the film, while Raoul Trujillo faces off against Maridueña as Carapax the Indestructible Man.
The first trailer for DC's upcoming Blue Beetle movie has impressive visuals, a lot of humor, and the first live-action iteration of Jaime Reyes.
As we see at the beginning of the trailer, Jaime (Xolo Maridueña) is a young man working at a resort in the fictional Palmera City. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE. Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. The film’s IMDb lists her as Victoria Kord, a character who only first appeared in this current “Graduation Day” comics arc. That is, of course, with the exception of Blue Beetle. Still, with the exception of The Flash and the Aquaman sequel, not many other projects seem certain.

The DC movie stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, a teenager who gains superpowers when an alien Blue Beetle scarab grafts onto him, forming a powerful exoskeleton around his body. This was originally a creation for the DCEU, but DC's new studio leader James Gunn has said the film would be "disconnected" from previous DCEU entries and could be made a part of the new franchise.

If we want to see more variety and really celebrate differences, celebrate cultures celebrate other worlds, the only way is by supporting a movie like this. “Once we started working on the script and I started to create concept art, the studio allowed me to run free in my creativity,” says Soto. “As far as the suit goes and other aspects of the story. So I really wanted to bring all the people I really respect from the movies that I saw growing up in Mexico, that really inspired me to become a filmmaker…They took the film, and they made it theirs.” Typical for superhero movies, Soto is cagey about how much a factor Ted Kord is in this story, but does hint at some of the influences from the pages of DC Comics. Their last name should ring a bell with DC fans: Ted Kord was the second and arguably best-known Blue Beetle, coming after original Beetle Dan Garret and preceding Jaime in the comics. to shift Blue Beetle from its initial incarnation as an HBO Max movie to a full-blown theatrical feature, complete with scenes shot in IMAX. “We see some of these other superheroes who are able to hide from their family the fact that they’re a superhero,” says Xolo Maridueña. There’s even an eyebrow-raising moment at the end when, as Jaime compares the Blue Beetle tech to some of Batman’s gear, his uncle Rudy proclaims, “Batman is a fascist.” “And that’s a theme that I think — whether or not you’re Latino — it transcends ethnicity, it transcends color of skin, because that’s something that we can all relate from. Certainly a lesser-known name outside of diehard DC readers, Blue Beetle’s history encompasses three separate characters in print, originally (and somewhat incredibly) going back all the way to 1939. Jaime Reyes is here to bring a new hero to the DC Universe, but his new movie trailer also has some interesting connections to Blue Beetle's comics past.
The trailer ends with a brief look at what appears to be the inside of Jaime’s eventual base of operations—seemingly taken over from somewhere inside Kord Industries, given that we see the costumes of the two prior Blue Beetles in the background for a moment. Early on in Jamie’s story, and seemingly in the movie as well, the Scarab often manifests the suit of its own volition, and it takes Jaime a while to actually control his newfound abilities. Given the shadow Kord Industries casts over this whole trailer, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing a lot of Ted’s time as the Blue Beetle even if Ted himself is not the star of the show in this movie. Inside the Big Belly Burger box is in fact not a Big Belly Burger—but the alien scarab that bonds with Jaime’s spine, transforming him into the Blue Beetle. Jaime is given a mysterious package to safeguard with his life in an innocuous hamburger box—which in and of itself is a DC Comics reference. While in most of its history Ted has directly led Kord Industries himself, most recently in the comics, and in the Blue Beetle movie, it’s managed by his sister, Victoria.

Jaime Reyes is Blue Beetle’s leading hero, but could others who’ve held the superhero mantle also show up in the movie?
Assuming the Blue Beetle movie ends up being part of However she’s connected to him, and potentially having played a role in said death/disappearance, Victoria Kord assumes control of the project and is willing to take more drastic measures with unlocking the Scarab’s potential. While it would be cool to see Ted Kord mentor Xolo Maridueña’s version of Jaime Reyes, judging by the trailer, it seems like his uncle Rudy, played by George Lopez, has a handle with figuring out the technology in that workshop, including flying The Bug, making it even less necessary for Ted to be around. Perhaps the Blue Beetle movie is following suit by having its Ted never being able to access the Scarab’s powers, and instead designing gadgets modeled after this extraterrestrial technology. [the main characters in the movie’s cast](https://www.cinemablend.com/superheroes/dcs-blue-beetle-updated-cast-list-includes-george-lopez-cobra-kais-xolo-mariduena-and-more) have been identified, with [Deadline](https://deadline.com/video/blue-beetle-trailer/) sharing that the lone holdout until today, What We Do in the Shadows’ Harvey Guillén, is playing someone named Dr. The first big tipoff towards this being a possibility comes at the end of the Blue Beetle trailer, when Jaime and his family are looking through a workshop filled with cool gadgets. Now, for the sake of argument, let’s assume that Ted Kord is indeed part of the Blue Beetle story, be it directly or indirectly. But between seeing his costume and Victoria Kord’s inclusion, not to mention Ted being smart enough to create the gadgets in that workshop, the possibility that he exists in this world isn’t something that should be dismissed out of hand. The trailer also gives us a quick look at Susan Sarandon’s Victoria Kord, the corporate figure who came into possession of the alien Scarab that bonds itself to Jaime Reyes. While Ted certainly has a lot of fans from his Justice League International days and partnership with Booster Gold, it’s probably safe to say at this point that Jaime has a bigger profile overall with comics fans and the general public, which this movie will only increase. Jaime Reyes was introduced in 2006’s Infinite Crisis #3 and he became Blue Beetle two issues later.
