That’s why she can get away with some of the words that come out of her mouth. In the final seconds LSU banked in a 3-pointer to eclipse 100. Some (a lot?) of it not good. Almost come to expect it. The only drama in the fourth quarter was whether Iowa could keep LSU from hitting 100. This is also what Kim Mulkey does, and why she is one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport. She knows it, too. Because Mulkey has the better team. In a national title game. “Year 2 at LSU ... That third foul changed her game. She must have grasped from an early age that winning covers nearly all of the sins we call important, but are usually negotiable.

The Tigers used a 6-0 run early in the fourth quarter to stretch their lead to 83-69 and force an Iowa timeout. Following the call, Clark bounced the ball behind her back and toward the baseline and was called for a technical — her fourth foul of the game. Jill Biden attended the national championship game Sunday and was seen viewing the action from a box with tennis legend Billie Jean King, among others. She scored 16 of her first-half points and made up the majority of the Tigers’ 30-8 advantage in bench points. Shortly after a strange stoppage in which referees reviewed an apparent elbow by Czinano on a bucket of hers with 2:58 left, the Iowa forward/center was called for her fourth foul. LSU and Iowa feature national sensations, but it was the Tigers’ bench, especially graduate transfer Jasmine Carson, that was the catalyst in their 102-85 win.

Ordinarily, the 3-pointer is not LSU's linchpin, but Mulkey encouraged her squad to embrace open looks. The Tigers hit the shots the Gamecocks couldn’t. Carson had totaled 11 points in the tournament’s first five games. But, LSU’s sidekicks catapulted the Tigers to the peak. I played with a personality myself,” Mulkey told ESPN after the game, while she shimmered in a sparkly gold, pink and black striped suit. New eyeballs were treated to Caitlin Clark’s deep 3-pointers for Iowa, Alexis Morris’ clutch midrange jumpers and LSU’s supporting cast delivering a herculean performance throughout the second quarter, while Reese and Morris were sidelined with foul trouble. Transfers will continue to view LSU as a marquee destination. The scary part for LSU’s competition? In two years, Mulkey transformed a nine-win program into national champions.

In just her second season back home in Louisiana, the Tigers are national champions after their decisive win over Iowa.

A bigger problem was Clark had to sit with three fouls after an incredible start herself, posting 16 points and five assists before the break. Carson had her LSU teammates sprinting off the bench after she banked in a buzzer-beater before the half, her 21st point of the game. LSU put on an absolute shooting clinic in the first half to go into halftime with a 59-42 lead that had their fans screeching “L-S-U! Clark and Czianano weren’t the only Hawkeyes to deal with foul trouble as Warnock also ended up fouling out. She was 5 for 5 from three-point range coming off the bench in the first half. I don’t fit in the box that you all want me to be in. The Baltimore native set the LSU and SEC single-season rebounding record after initially planning to transfer to Tennessee or South Carolina, but went for a recruiting trip with Kateri Poole, fell in love and canceled all other trips. “So this is for the girls that look like me, that want to speak up on what they believe in. Mulkey took the program from nine wins in 2020-21 to 26 in her first year, to winning it all in year No. The 102 points are a record for the championship game. She bolstered the roster through the transfer portal with DALLAS — Kim Mulkey wiped away tears with under a minute remaining in the NCAA women’s basketball championship game Sunday afternoon.

Mulkey's L.S.U. players say they appreciate her tough approach. But her relationship with Brittney Griner continues to receive scrutiny.

Griner has said she respected Mulkey’s disciplined approach to coaching at Baylor and appreciated the way Mulkey defended her against brutal taunting at games. “When I came to L.S.U., I needed a coach to keep it real with me. The emotions on Mulkey’s face served as a kind of play-by-play during the game, from celebration to anguish to anger. “We like sparkles, we like diamonds, we like Mardi Gras, we like to eat, and we like to party.” There appears to still be tension between Mulkey and Maryland Coach Brenda Frese, whose team the star Angel Reese left to join L.S.U. And I think that transcends any of the X’s and O’s.” And you’ve got to put some respect on Coach Kim Mulkey.” “I may snicker sometimes at the way she does things,” U.C.L.A. “But you’ve got to put some respect on L.S.U. Earlier, when she grew upset, she stomped her feet and clapped in a referee’s face and mimicked Clark throwing an elbow to free herself for shots. Arizona Coach Adia Barnes, who took her team to the 2021 national championship game, said she believed that Mulkey’s strategic maneuvers were underrated. Her most recent came in only her second season at L.S.U., with nine new players on the roster.
