Of course, accuracy off the tee helped set up those approaches, and Conners was on the mark with his Ping G430 LST driver. “It helps with risk assessment and making good decisions is an attribute of that mindset and that translates to my golf game, and I think I’m good at that.” As such, Conners leaned on his reliable iron game (he came into the event ranked 28th in greens in regulation for the season). Corey Conners studied actuarial math in college at Kent State but he didn’t need that skill to understand why he won the Valero Texas Open for the second time. The iBlade is the same model iron Conners used to win the Valero in 2019, his one other PGA Tour victory. “It's very demanding with your irons into the greens,” he said.

Conners wins second PGA Tour title in Texas (TSN)

What looked as though it might be an easy walk up 18 turned into a nervy finish, but no matter how it happened, Corey Conners is a PGA Tour winner again.

I'm just not quite on and I felt like the week off after the Players Championship – the weekend off and the week off -- after the Players Championship, I took a few days and really got to work. Along with Adam Svensson, who won in November, it’s the first time three different Canadians have won on the PGA Tour in the same season. Some hard work after a missed cut at the Players Championship seemed to turn the ship around and this week, he finished first in Greens in Regulation and third in Driving Accuracy. The win for Conners ended a bumpy spell he’d been enduring from the start of the season. Conners appeared set to take a comfortable lead down the home stretch, leading by three after 15 holes. It’s his second PGA Tour win, with the first coming at the same event in 2019.

"I'm not sure he missed a shot for 18 holes and it was really impressive on this golf course and in the wind." It was a tremendous ball-striking display from start to finish, and in the end even the hot putting of Stevens wasn't enough to bring him down. "I've drawn from some of the experience I had here, and really happy with the way that I hit the ball and got myself in position," Conners said. A solid if slightly aggressive lag left him three feet for the win, and when he poured it in, he flashed a modest smile as his wife and new daughter greeted him on the green. By the time they made the turn, Conners held a four-shot lead and had a chance to coast to the win. This was Conners' second PGA Tour victory, and it came in the same place as the first; four years ago, he grabbed his maiden win at this same tournament.

2023 Texas Open leaderboard, grades: Corey Conners finds ... (CBSSports.com)

Conners leaned on his steady ball striking and timely putting for his second career victory on the PGA Tour.

The man from Japan ranked fourth in strokes gained off the tee, seventh in strokes gained tee to green and 22nd in strokes gained approach. Tyrrell Hatton (--): For as kind as the Florida Swing was to the Englishman, the Texas Swing has been rude. Hatton opened with a 2-under 70, where he ranked 123rd in strokes gained putting but backed it up with a 3-over 75 where he lost nearly four strokes from tee to green and ultimately missed the cut by one. His Texas Open aspirations were put to an end when he signed for a quadruple-bogey nine on Friday and was unable to recover from such a head-scratching blunder. For the week, he ranked 10th in strokes gained tee to green and should only continue this upward trajectory having now notched top-20 finishes in six of his last seven starts. When a couple more birdies and zero blemishes found their way onto his scorecard -- he was one of just two players to navigate TPC San Antonio in a bogey-free manner on Sunday -- the victory was as good as his. Rickie Fowler (-8): He didn't win for the first time in four years to punch his ticket into the Masters like everyone was hoping, but this week was still another step in the right direction. With the Stanford product struggling to find his swing and bleeding strokes to the field, the Canadian went about his business in a methodical fashion. The Georgia Bulldog didn't have his typically reliable iron play to lean on in San Antonio but was still able to golf his ball in an impressive fashion. Heading into this year's tournament with showings of T10, T8 and T6 in his last three appearances at Augusta National, Conners' trajectory could be similar to that of this week. 8-14 in 4 under before a booming eagle on the drivable par-4 17th cut Conners' lead to as little as one. Finishing the week at TPC San Antonio at 15 under, Conners utilized a stellar final round to usurp Patrick Rodgers and fend off a surging Sam Stevens and Sam Ryder.
