Live: Iowa women's basketball vs South Carolina NCAA Final Four ... (Hawk Central)

Women's March Madness continues with Iowa vs. South Carolina in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. Follow along for the latest updates.

This marks only the second trip to the Final Four in program history for the Iowa women's basketball team. Here are 15 stats that put her dominance in perspective.](https://www.hawkcentral.com/story/sports/college/iowa/basketball-women/2023/03/24/how-good-is-iowa-womens-basketball-player-caitlin-clark-15-stats-to-know-hawkeyes-ncaa/70041142007/) The two play very different spots on the floor, with Clark dominating from the perimeter while Boston is a menace in the paint. The Hawkeyes boast Naismith Player of the Year Caitlin Clark while South Carolina has last year's POY in Aliyah Boston. Iowa isn't particularly used to coming into a game playing the underdog role this season. Still, the Gamecocks are a different sort of beast and ar a double-digit favorite tonight. Going out there and knowing we have literally nothing to lose, (South Carolina) should be winning this game. That's when the real fun begins in this live blog. If the Hawkeyes are able to pull off the shocking upset over South Carolina tonight, they'll take on LSU and three-time national title-winning coach Kim Mulkey for a national championship Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes come in as an 11.5-point underdog, Maybe slightly more noise for the Hawkeyes, but fans of both teams made their way to the Lone Star State. The Gamecocks have a winning streak of 42 games, dating back to last year's NCAA Tournament, and they're looking to extend it tonight.

Women's basketball is having a moment. And it's long overdue (Sportsnet.ca)

Clark won the Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year award after becoming the first player in NCAA Division 1 history, man or woman, to record over 900 ...

Simply put, that is where all of the best young women play, and it is the only clear pathway to the pros and WNBA. And the most exciting part for the sport may be that the attention being paid to this year’s March Madness tournament does not seem to be a one-off. However, it’s undoubtedly a step in the right direction that most women can now get paid for playing college basketball while being seen by national audiences without having to compete with men for said audience's attention). Add in the fact that the best players are now getting paid through NIL deals while in college, and it feels sustainable that all the best women will continue to play in the NCAA for the next few years at least. As WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert put it, “this is the way to assess the popularity of the sport in Canada,” which got off to a good start as the game sold out a 20,000-seat venue in Scotiabank Arena within minutes. In fact, we are witnessing the most stacked field of young Canadian women in our country’s history right now, with players like Aaliyah Edwards at UConn, Shayeann Day-Wilson at Duke, Cassandre Prosper at Notre Dame, Yvonne Ejim at Gonzaga, and Laeticia Amihere at South Carolina, a big x factor the rest of the tournament and [a lock to get selected in the 2023 WNBA Draft](https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FChantelJennings%2Fstatus%2F1639984619121434624&data=05%7C01%7CAlly.Chesham%40rci.rogers.com%7Cacbf7c6fb4504076253108db31919f5c%7C0ab4cbbf4bc74826b52ca14fed5286b9%7C0%7C0%7C638158273750304698%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=jXUvw0vxF6PC4xVVjvtF2skMISK7URdbm0qEODwqPBE%3D&reserved=0) and become the fourth Canadian player in the WNBA next season. And it was only last year that the women got the “March Madness” branding for their tournament as well. Clark scored or assisted on 70 of Iowa's 97 points in the 97-83 win, which is a tournament record for most points created by a player in one game. Some of the current excitement around women’s basketball is based around Clark, a walking highlight reel who shoots like Steph Curry and passes like Scottie Barnes. And the performance sent the Hawkeyes to their first Final Four in 30 years. 2 seed in the Seattle 4 Region of March Madness, averaging 27.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.6 assists per game on 47/39/84 shooting splits this season. The 21-year-old Junior from West Des Moines, Iowa led her native Iowa Hawkeyes to a 30-6 record and the No.

Excitement and anticipation surround NCAA Women's Final Four (PBS NewsHour)

Jeffrey Brown: There may not be a more anticipated matchup than tonight's big game between the Iowa Hawkeyes and defending champions South Carolina Gamecocks.

Well, my guess is she will stay at Iowa, because the money that she can make from all those companies, national and, of course, in Iowa, where she is just the queen of the world, why wouldn't she stay in college and then make those hundreds of thousands of dollars? And I think we're seeing the same kind of thing. And she's only in her second year at LSU after winning three national titles with Baylor and a long career there. It's their first time in the Final Four. But if anyone can pull it off, it would be Iowa, the way we have watched them play. And she has got not only Aliyah Boston, and a great, great supporting cast, but people in the bench who can come in, just waves and waves, as one coach said, of players that she can bring in. This is that big of a deal. Ratings for the women's tournament are way up this year, 73 percent higher than a year ago during the Sweet 16. Yes, I don't think we have ever seen a more anticipated women's basketball game ever. That game also features the current national player of the year, Iowa guard Caitlin Clark, going against last year's national player of the year, forward Aliyah Boston. Jeffrey Brown discussed the games with Christine Brennan. Ratings for the women’s tournament are up 73% compared to a year ago and an Iowa game last weekend had higher ratings than any NBA game on ESPN this season.

As she is swatting shots, snatching rebounds and craftily banking in scoop layups, she is playing the Baltimore way. One factor at play is the differing capacities in the arenas, with the women’s Final Four in American Airlines Center, which seats 20,000, and the men’s games at NRG Stadium, with well over 70,000 seats. The men’s Final Four lacks equivalent star power. “It shows the demand that people want to be here and be in the arena that seats 20,000 people,” Clark said. “We’re literally watching the game grow and change right in front of our faces, and we’re playing a huge part in it.” The analysis, by the ticketing technology company Logitix, showed that average ticket prices for the women’s semifinals and final in Dallas this weekend doubled compared with 2022 figures, to $367 for the semifinal games on Friday night. The last time Reese was on the floor, she had her worst shooting game of the season against Miami in the round of 8. Lots of fouls, lots of free throws, lots of timeouts in the past 40 seconds of game time here. The Tigers started the game in control only to trail off in the second and third as Amoore got hot from the 3-point line and the Hokies settled into an easy rhythm. The ballroom at the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Dallas was overflowing with black and gold. Once they advanced to the Final Four, the fandom got back in cars and planes to occupy Carver South. Boston, Cooke and Beal have been the core of South Carolina’s dominance over the past four seasons.

"Our concepts maintain that balance and provide flexibility to the many different programs in Division I." John's (New York) and chair of the Women's Basketball Summer Initiative Working Group, added: "Our working group's charge was to develop innovative concepts to grow the game of women's basketball, particularly in the summer. "It allows for competition without changing the focus of individual and team development and getting better in the summer." Division I Women's Basketball Summer Initiative Working Group concepts include 3-on-3 competition. We believe the proposed concepts achieve this and align with the women's basketball strategic plan to advance the unique brand of NCAA women's basketball." The Men's and Women's Basketball Summer Initiative Working Groups have spent the past several months developing initial concepts that would permit a limited amount of competition to occur during the summer.

Here's what to know about LSU before Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes play the Tigers in the national title game Sunday.

The Tigers had fallen on hard times, failing to make the NCAA Tournament four straight years before she took over. The Tigers come into this game with the fifth-best offense in the nation, scoring an average of 81.8 points per game compared to Iowa's 87.6. She spent two seasons at Big Ten rival Maryland before transferring to LSU before the 2022-23 campaign. The Hawkeyes won't have to worry much about her from long range, though. The Tigers have made the Final Four on six occasions, but they've never made it past the national semifinals until this season. Then they cruised past Miami in the Elite Eight before coming back in the fourth quarter to topple 1-seed Virginia Tech in the Final Four.
