E3 Has Been Cancelled After Major Video Game Publishers Drop Out (Forbes)

E3 2023 is no more. The ESA has announced that the June expo has been cancelled following the withdrawal of several major video game publishers.

Perhaps the ESA can rethink the nature of the expo and bring it back in a new and updated form that works better for everyone. This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3. I understand why the internet has made it easy for companies to just drop game reveals at any time on their own terms, but it’s rarely as exciting as during a big presentation with a stage and an audience and announcers and an orchestra and all the fanfare. Whatever E3 once was, the version of the expo that was headed to LA in June was something else entirely. But this was also the first year that E3 was opened to the public, which fundamentally changed the nature of the expo, making it far more crowded and difficult to navigate, especially in LA. Certainly the future of E3 looks very bleak at this point.

E3 2023: video game industry's biggest expo cancelled (The Guardian)

The annual event, which faced years of Covid disruption, will not return in 2023.

In its absence, rival online-focused events have sprung up to fill the gap, but none has yet achieved E3’s notoriety and mainstream attention. Its cancellation leaves the games industry without a dominant focal point for marketing new titles; instead, since Covid, the trend has been towards live-streamed shows where In the past, E3 had been open to industry professionals and the public alike, with about 66,000 attendees in 2019, before Covid shut down large-scale events.

E3 2023 canceled, ESA confirms, as publishers pull out (Polygon)

Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Sega, and Ubisoft have all bailed on E3. This year's E3 is canceled, due to lack of participation and interest.

The ESA attempted both an in-person and digital version of E3 2022, but [both incarnations were canceled](https://www.polygon.com/23005160/e3-2022-canceled-digital-event-esa). The cancellation of E3 2023 — the third scrapped version of the event in recent years — is another distressing indicator of the health of the expo, and the industry’s valuation of it. [Summer Game Fest, will serve as an alternative for game publishers and developers](https://www.polygon.com/23162335/e3-summer-game-fest-2023-clash-analysis) to showcase their wares in June. On Thursday, [IGN](https://www.ign.com/articles/e3-has-been-canceled) reported that E3 organizers reportedly told members that E3 2023 “simply did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry.” “This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3,” said Kyle Marsden-Kish, global VP of gaming at ReedPop, in a news release. The Electronic Entertainment Expo, colloquially known as E3, has officially cancelled its 2023 event. This would have been the first E3 since 2019.

E3, which once focused heavily on gaming retail, has faced a challenge with a shift to digital storefronts and the rise of online, trailer-focused gaming events. The latter is also produced by ReedPop and hosts events in Seattle and Boston that are said to attract more than 100,000 attendees, although it is unclear if that number is daily breakdown or a cumulative figure. E3 typically brought in more than 65,000 fans and industry professionals to the Los Angeles Convention Center and surrounding events every summer. E3’s four-day, online-only gala in 2021 [was low on video game razzmatazz](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2021-06-16/nintendos-big-reveal-and-the-hype-storylines-and-mysteries-of-e3-2021) and buzz was split among the two, trailer preview-focused events. The Electronic Entertainment Expo, colloquially known as E3, was canceled Thursday months before it was to open at the Los Angeles Convention Center celebration in June. E3’s cancellation leaves a giant hole on Los Angeles’ summer convention calendar, and without what was once a signature event.

E3 Wasn't Canceled, It Was Killed (Kotaku)

While the show had become increasingly irrelevant, that wasn't all the show's fault.

They don’t need to walk journalists around for three days answering questions that may be occasionally uncomfortable when they can just get influencers to hype their games live on Twitch and YouTube. At its peak—whenever you think that was across its various locations and decades—E3 ran for just a handful of days, but in that time hundreds of major announcements would be made, from new hardware to AAA reveals, and each of them would be vying for the public’s attention. [Like we’ve said before, there’s nothing major video games companies like more than being able to control the entire process of making a sale](https://kotaku.com/stop-preordering-video-games-1713802537?rev=1680215124405), from announcement to pre-order. They don’t need to pay for big E3 press conferences anymore, they can just film their own presentations and show them on a day when there’s no competing news. If there was one thing that defined E3 beyond “press conferences”, it would be that every event, and every show, had its own list of “winners” and “losers”, drawn up by forum posters and international media alike. Why on earth would any major company want to risk being a gladiator?

In 1995, Sony’s Steve Race walks to the podium, says a single word (announcing the launch price of the PlayStation) and walks off to a room full of applause. Which is good for business, but it’s a shame in some ways for the rest of us, since as the show has grown ever more professional we’ve been deprived of memorable/terrible moments like these. Bless him for having the courage to try, but it was not. Imagine then working for a company that isn’t Nintendo but gets the once-in-a-lifetime chance to make a Nintendo game. Long before the disaster of $599 or the triumph of $499, Sony made the most memorable price announcement of all time. [which is still around!](http://www.nintendojo.com/)—thought it would be a good idea to ask Shigeru Miyamoto a question in Japanese. E3 has always been so much about manufactured excitement that in 2019, when Ikumi Nakamura took to the stage to talk about Ghostwire: Protocol, she damn near stole the entire week’s show with some actual, bonafide enthusiasm. Throw in the fact series creator Shigeru Miyamoto wandered on-stage with a quality Master Sword and Hylian Shield and you’ve got maybe Nintendo’s strongest ever E3 performance. So pull up a chair and bask in all this E3 glory. E3 isn't coming back (The Verge)

E3 2023 is cancelled, and the gaming industry is mourning. E3 just doesn't seem to fit the needs of the industry anymore, and so the industry has moved on.

But after Microsoft opted out of this year’s show floor in favor of its own showcase in Los Angeles [around Starfield](https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/8/23500202/starfield-release-date-xbox-bethesda), it felt like the writing was on the wall. [all-digital Summer Game Fest in June 2020](https://www.theverge.com/2020/5/1/21243981/summer-game-fest-news-events-geoff-keighley-sony-microsoft), and he’s since hosted one every year as a venue for E3-like gaming bombshells. [skipped E3 2019](https://www.theverge.com/2018/11/15/18097441/sony-playstation-skipping-e3-2019-keynote-booth) in favor of hosting its own video presentations at different times throughout the year. Even in the United States, last week’s Like [my colleague Ash Parrish](https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/30/23663862/e3-2023-cancelled-esa-reedpop), I’ve always wanted to go, but don’t think I’ll ever get the chance; the industry has changed enough that it’s probably not coming back. But even execs have been forced to figure out how to do those things remotely during the pandemic, and may not need it anymore. Why bother to show new hardware at E3 in the future? Yet even without E3 as an anchor, developers and publishers have found ways to make a splash that don’t include the investment required for a big booth on the expo show floor. Nintendo had already said that it wouldn’t be participating in E3 [this year](https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/24/23613605/nintendo-e3-not-attending-show-2023), and while that doesn’t preclude the company from making news in June, it might be content to let [The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom do the talking](https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/28/23658228/zelda-tears-of-the-kingdom-gameplay-trailer-nintendo-switch). I’m not saying in-person conventions are dead. Then, they can send journalists software over the internet, no need to wait for a locked-down demo console.

Responding to criticism, the 2021 event was shaved down to six weeks, and the 2022 version took direct aim at E3 (which was cancelled again, of course) with a four-day event running from 9th June featuring And it was in desperate need of refinement; the 2020 debut was an interminably bloated, season-long mishmash of semi-affiliated shows and overlapping announcements that was tough to parse even if you had your finger on the pulse.
