Monday Morning Leafs Report: Toronto has John Tavares-related ... (The Athletic)

One of the central remaining questions for Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe is what to do with Tavares.

[Erik Gustafsson](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/erik-gustafsson-rvKLV7y9qO0rUK0y/) also lingers. [John Tavares](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/john-tavares-XRlpFavIyLChpjMR/) and [William Nylander](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/william-nylander-TTskHMdFinH0gM1n/) together. [Ilya Lyubushkin](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/ilya-lyubushkin-LwBFjEqs0MHufGRU/) role next to Rielly on a more permanent basis, or whether Liljegren can re-emerge. [Mitch Marner](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/mitch-marner-4ruZuzgBxxa43HbV/) cannot be split up. [Calle Järnkrok](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/calle-jarnkrok-dIGEPsuQCmQKCIjQ/) has rounded out the trio nicely in recent weeks. (He’ll be hard-pressed to ever top his debut season when he pumped in 47 goals and 88 points.) And while his five-on-five production is up slightly from last season, it’s the power play where things have really gotten out of control. This is a play the Leafs practise on the regular: Or maybe Nylander if Keefe wanted to try a look similar(ish) to last season. (Keefe called him a “stabilizer” for that line defensively following the Nashville game.) Namely, Kämpf centering the fourth line in recent weeks while the third line fluctuates in 11/7 formations. One of the central remaining questions for Keefe is what to do with Tavares: Where should he play (at wing or centre) and who with? Since the start of March, the Leafs have been outscored 7-3 in the 104 minutes that Tavares and Nylander have shared at five-on-five.

John Tavares had two goals and an assist as the Maple Leafs ended a five-game trip in the proper way on Sunday.

The Leafs, who lost in Carolina on Saturday, improved to 8-3-1 in the second game of back-to-back sets. Both of Tavares’ goals came on the power play. Toronto improved to 44-20-9 and 97 points.

Tavares scores twice, Maple Leafs edge Predators (TSN)

John Tavares scored two goals and added an assist, Joseph Woll made 22 saves and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Nashville Predators 3-2 on Sunday ...

Tavares leads the Maple Leafs in power-play goals with 15. I’m always grateful when I get to hop in the net with the Leafs. Tavares scored the game’s first goal at 18:06 of the opening period. The Maple Leafs are seven points ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning for second place in the Atlantic Division with Toronto having one game in hand. You leave them within striking distance and that’s why they have a chance to get a push there in the third.” Tyson Barrie had a goal and an assist, Cody Glass also scored and Kevin Lankinen made 31 saves for Nashville, which lost back-to-back home games over the weekend.

Game in 10: John Tavares ends goal drought, Joseph Woll shines ... (Maple Leafs Hot Stove)

John Tavares scored twice to end an eight-game scoring drought, Alexander Kerfoot found the scoresheet again, and the Maple Leafs held down the fort in ...

Lots to be decided still even if the positioning in the standings is all but a formality. As it stands, the Leafs now sit seven points up on the Lightning with a game in hand. That duo just completed a really solid weekend with a ridiculous 96% of the expected goals in over 16 minutes of five-on-five ice time tonight — conceding just .05 of an expected goal and generating 1.33 — after owning 84% of the xGF in Carolina. Home ice in the first round hasn’t been clinched, but it’s pretty difficult to envision a realistic scenario in which Tampa Bay overtakes them for second in the Atlantic. After William Nylander took a high stick to put the Leafs back on the power play, the top unit once again went to work with efficiency. Joe Woll made an incredible save with the right pad on a chance in front. Following a one-timer that went just wide, William Nylander was able to buy some time and cycle back to the point to reset the structure of the power play. After Auston Matthews drew a penalty, the Leafs generated a few more chances themselves. Both teams were stuck to the outside in the offensive zone, unable to generate any significant scoring chances. Toronto was able to open the scoring before the end of the period. [Leafs](https://mapleleafshotstove.com/) were taking a beating in the shot column early on. Mark Giordano carried the puck down low and put it out front multiple times, the second of which nearly resulted in a William Nylander goal.

Tavares gives Maple Leafs a bit of everything to close out road trip ... (Sportsnet.ca)

With a little bit of everything — three points to his name, a bit of grit, some mental fortitude — John Tavares ensured his club did what they needed to do, ...

“I think overall we carried a lot of the play in the third period,” Tavares told Sportsnet’s Shawn McKenzie after the final buzzer had sounded. I thought our power play responded really well, and overall we just played with the puck a lot in their half of the ice, and behind their goal line. Tavares took a Morgan Rielly point shot off the body, let it fall to the ice, and then spun and swept it past Lankinen. After some early chances traded by both clubs to start the final frame, Tavares found himself stranded near the offensive blue line, Nashville’s Kiefer Sherwood with just enough space to chip the puck by the Leafs captain and prepare to fly up ice on an odd-man rush. Toronto kept the pressure on, doubling the Preds in shots through that middle frame, cruising to the second intermission with a steady 2-0. Still, it was the type of game playoff-bound teams seem to fumble often: a desperate opponent with nothing to lose, the back half of a back-to-back, the final test on a road trip that’s been decent enough already.

Maple Leafs report cards: John Tavares' 2 goals lift the Leafs past ... (The Athletic)

Tavares found the back of the net on two power plays in Toronto's 3-2 win in Nashville.

[Jake McCabe](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/jake-mccabe-e4qyoK8c2NFSTBCN/) and [T.J. [Michael Bunting](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/michael-bunting-K4D7MjexKR4ohriL/) for a one-timer chance in the slot during an early third-period power play. Woll had no chance, as the puck deflected off [Justin Holl](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/justin-holl-KAE2cLY1OIsPLBnu/): [Kiefer Sherwood](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/kiefer-sherwood-UyVb0ByHnvw917xz/). Simmonds returned to the lineup for his 15th game of the season, and his line played quite well in the first. The Leafs struggled in his minutes in the first, but he set up a scramble opportunity in front of Nashville’s net at the end of the period. With just under two minutes to play in the first, Marner went behind the net, got lost in the offensive zone, then set up Tavares in the slot with a one-touch pass. He faced just two shots in the first half of the third, but this stop off a two-on-one was definitely one of his best: He was a perfect 12-for-12 in the first period. He also set up [Auston Matthews](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/auston-matthews-9SjwQzInyEKRwajO/) in the slot on the power play at the end of the second.

Maple Leafs News & Rumors: Woll, McCabe, Tavares & Kerfoot (The Hockey Writers)

There are just under 10 games left in the Toronto Maple Leafs schedule. Are the team's line combinations and defensive pairings ready?

Barring a highly unlikely scenario where the Lightning overtakes them for second place in the Atlantic, Toronto’s job now is to fine-tune, stay healthy, and figure out their playoff lineup over the remaining nine games. Given that Jarnkrok’s move up the pecking order has offered such a positive trickle-down effect on the rest of the forward lines, I would expect Keefe to work to keep them together. Kerfoot’s nine goals and 30 points in 73 games this season are less than his 2021-22 season totals of 13 goals and 51 points. Despite not having donned a Maple Leafs jersey for a while, he was confident and in control of his game and himself. He helped the team bounce back from Saturday’s loss, and there seems to be a good feeling when he’s in the net. Fans may not like his contract, but his contributions have been instrumental in the Maple Leafs’ success this season. Although McCabe isn’t exactly the same player as Jake Muzzin, he’s still a shutdown defenseman, and Keefe might have assembled a pairing capable of playing those kinds of minutes. This year, he’s playing even better, with an impressive 32 goals and 43 assists (for 75 points) in just 72 games. Now the Maple Leafs have a couple of days off to rest before their next game against the Florida Panthers on Wednesday on home ice. While his four-game stint this season is surprisingly similar to last season’s four games, he just seems more composed in the crease. Second place, and the home-ice advantage that goes with it, is theirs to lose. Woll was strong in goal against the Predators.
