Call of the Wilde: Montreal Canadiens rout Columbus Blue Jackets (Globalnews.ca)

Overall, the Canadiens foundation is strong and on the way to getting much stronger. This was an excellent season for development.

It is unlikely that he would sign a contract that sends him immediately to the AHL. The expectation is he will be offered a three year contract as a 21 year old. Farrell has earned the NHL three-year offer and the Canadiens know that as well. Cup winners have strength down the middle, and one of them has to elevate just a bit more to show they have 80 to 90 points in them. That’s a little late in the game to offer a forward a contract for a rebuilding team. Draft picks are needed to get the best players at the top of the draft. It was a shame that we didn’t get to see him play the second half of the year. Caufield was on pace for a 47-goal season when he was removed to repair the torn labrum in his shoulder. The improvement of Suzuki is a win as well. There were years that Matheson wasn’t even a regular in the NHL. Even Jonathan Drouin is making a case in the last year of a long contract that he may win an offer for one season this summer. The Canadiens went from only having Nick Suzuki as a top-six centre to having a second centre that may be equal to or even better than Suzuki one day.

Blue Jackets allow six unanswered goals to Canadiens in blowout loss (The Cannon)

After an entertaining first period for the Blue Jackets, the wheels came off in the second period en route to an 8-2 thrashing at the hands of the Montreal ...

He skated the puck in the zone, and had Bayreither backing up and providing a perfect screen on his shot that beat Hutchinson. Upon a second look, it was actually Andrew Peeke who put the puck into his own net trying to break up the cross-crease pass. It was all Montreal at this point, and the Jackets were struggling to keep up with the pressure. Not many stoppages at all and a lot of neutral zone play kept the clock running. The Jackets had energy out of the gate tonight, and didn’t look like they were on the latter half of a back-to-back...yet. Before I could even sit back down for the start of the second period, Montreal scored and it was all downhill from there. The Jackets managed some shots, but none were really much of a threat to get behind Montembault. Once again it took just another minute and a half for another goal to be scored, this time for the Canadiens. Johnson faked shot and slid a backhand pass to Lane Pederson who just had to put the puck into the empty cage. Mike Matheson carried the puck into the offensive zone and dropped a pass to Mike Hoffman. In his first game back from his leave of absence, Elvis Merzlikins left in the second period due to injury. The tired legs in the back-end of a back-to-back caught up to them as they allowed a second period hat trick to Raphael Harvey-Pinard.

Harvey-Pinard nets three, Canadiens crush Blue Jackets (Sportsnet.ca)

Rafael Harvey-Pinard electrified the Bell Centre with his first career hat trick as the Montreal Canadiens routed the Columbus Blue Jackets 8-2 on Saturday.

The Latvian appeared to have suffered the injury while attempting to make a save on the play resulting in Rafael Harvey-Pinard’s hat trick goal. Marchenko took a shot from a tight angle over Montembeault’s shoulder to tie the game but the net was knocked loose in the process. Merzlikins made the save but Harvey-Pinard zoomed into the crease to tap in Montreal’s third goal. Ylonen took advantage of Brendan Gallagher’s screen in front of the net to send a wrist shot from atop the left faceoff circle. Greer in Thursday’s 4-2 loss to the Boston Bruins, beat Merzlikins with a wrist shot. The Blue Jackets took only 1:32 to score the game's first goal.

[Boone Jenner](https://news.sportsinteraction.com/nhl/player/boone-jenner-4406) came to the rescue, notching his 25th of the campaign on the always dangerous OT powerplay. Speaking of things having to give, Montreal takes the most amount of penalties of any team, and has the fourth-worst PK unit, but the Blue Jackets are only good for 22nd on the man advantage. Both previous games were played in Ohio, with the Jackets defending home ice the first time 6-4, then falling to the Habs 3-1 on the second try.

Canadiens' brand provides lopsided win over Blue Jackets ... (Sportsnet.ca)

Under Martin St. Louis, the Montreal Canadiens have established their brand of hockey for the future. And despite an 8-2 shellacking of the Columbus Blue ...

“We see the benefit of that and I feel, as coaches, it’s very rewarding to see that some of the stuff you work on, they can go out there and almost…nothing’s easy, but it’s easier when you get some of these reps in practice.” And I think that’s the driving force of everything in all three zones is how good we are at being on top of them. Louis talked about how organized both teams are, and about how that organization is a function of having a recognizable brand and a connectivity borne of familiarity that’s been in place between their players for years. And I know that’s hard, but the more you talk about it, the more you work at it, the more you show examples, it’s impossible to think that every time and every rep you’re going to take, it’s going to be connected, but the more you stay at it, the closer you get to it…I feel like we’ve grown tremendously on both sides of the puck that way, and all that happens through balance on the ice.” “I think the most important thing about our brand is just the balance and the connection on both sides of the puck,” he started. And all of them were shining bright because the team tapped into the brand they’ve consistently displayed all week (in a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday, in a game they lost but easily could’ve won against the NHL’s most dominant team in Boston and in Saturday’s beatdown of the woeful Blue Jackets).
