Takeaways: Andreescu overcomes Sakkari in three hours in Miami (WTA Tennis)

Bianca Andreescu edged Maria Sakkari in their rivalry's third three-set battle to reach the Miami Open third round.

A shoulder injury forced her to retire in the Hua Hin semifinals at the start of February, and visibly affected her during that month's Middle East swing. Her record since coming back is 28-19 so far, and she has reached No.31 in the rankings (potentially returning to the Top 30 after Miami). "I felt like I was on my heels a lot of the time during the match, but I made every ball," said Andreescu. She also got the better of a three-break exchange that opened the decider, nailing key return winners to capture the Sakkari serve twice. Sakkari's tally grew throughout the first half of the third set as she struggled for rhythm, though she delivered a valiant late-stage fightback attempt from 4-1 down. [defeat of Emma Raducanu in the first round](https://www.wtatennis.com/news/3119345/andreescu-battles-past-raducanu-in-marquee-miami-opener) was characterised by her strong play on big points, and that quality shone through again.

Fernandez falls to Bencic in Miami (tenniscanada.com)

Denis Shapovalov and Bianca Andreescu reached the third round of the Miami Open on Friday, but Leylah Fernandez was eliminated.

Looking fresh and determined in her first outing of the tournament, Bencic needed just 27 minutes to take the first set, only dropping two points on serve and breaking Fernandez three times. Led by captain Heidi El Tabakh, Fernandez and fellow Canadians Andreescu, Gabriela Dabrowski, and Rebecca Marino look to defeat Belgium [at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, B.C](https://www.tenniscanada.com/pro-tennis/team-canada/billie-jean-king-cup/tickets/). The set remained on serve until the Argentine played a poor eighth game to hand the decisive break to Shapovalov which he ran with by impressively serving out the match at love. He saved the lone break point he faced in the opening frame and came through with a few big deliveries to get himself out of trouble while also securing a one-set lead. The 23-year-old jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the opening set and managed to maintain his advantage throughout. Meanwhile, Shapovalov was more erratic and grew increasingly frustrated with his level of play as the set wore on. Canada’s Leylah Annie Fernandez has been eliminated from the Miami Open following a 1-6,1-6defeat to ninth-seeded Swiss star Belinda Bencic. She had to save a break point as she served for the set but the Greek closed it out with a forehand winner. Both [Rebecca Marino and Katherine Sebov were beaten by Top 10 opponents](https://www.tenniscanada.com/news/miami-2023-thursday/) in the second round on Thursday. However, the game slipped away from the Greek as she missed six game points and Andreescu was able to break back. 24 in the tournament, Shapovalov, who is trying to work through an early season funk, benefitted from an opening round bye. Sakkari fired a backhand into the net to fall behind the immediate break.

Miami Open Day 6 preview: Krejcikova, Andreescu lurking as title ... (WTA Tennis)

2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova and 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu are looking sharp through the early days of the Miami Open.

Keys was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Krejcikova in the quarterfinals of last year’s Australian Open. After easing her way through qualifying into the main draw, Muchova has been dominant through her two matches in Miami. In all, Krejcikova beat five of the Top 15 players en route to her first WTA 1000 title. Both players are trying to regain the dizzying altitude that defined their early careers. There’s also the matter of a 1-0 head-to-head advantage. “So I think it’s going to be an interesting matchup.” Still, every ending brings a new beginning and the possibilities in Sunday’s third round are intriguing. Frech came back to defeat wildcard Erika Anddreeva 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and now faces Varvara Gracheva, the qualifier who upset Jabeur. I like it. This is a battle of two resurgent talents who both made the quarterfinals at Indian Wells last week. Late last month, Krejcikova scored a rare triple, defeating the top-three-ranked players in Dubai -- Swiatek (in the final), Sabalenka (quarterfinals) and Jessica Pegula (semifinals). There are seven unseeded players among the 16 remaining in the bottom half and three matches featuring two of them, not to mention a lucky loser.
