Andreescu and Fernandez Advance at the Miami Open - Tennis ... (tenniscanada.com)

The Canadian women remain undefeated in singles at the Miami Open after Leylah Annie Fernandez defeated Lesia Tsurenko in the opening round.

Raducanu made one last push to get back in the match when she had a break back point in the following game, but drove a backhand into the net. But two games later, Raducanu double-faulted to give the Canadian another pair and this time on the second, some smart ball placement from Andreescu drew an error to claim a 4-2 lead. Still, the Brit was in the ascendency as the set went along and she began to find her range. Raducanu held serve from love-30 at 3-all and then heaped the pressure on Andreescu in an epic seventh game. While Andreescu missed a backhand at 4-1 that would have given her a double break lead, she never gave the Brit a chance to get back in the opening set, losing just six points on serve. Fernandez once again went down a break right out of the gate in set two, but just like the opening frame, she quickly erased the deficit with pinpoint accuracy and some great angles on her groundstrokes.

Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray suffer first round Miami Open exits (The Guardian)

Emma Raducanu lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to Bianca Andreescu while Andy Murray lost 6-4, 7-5 to Dusan Lajovic in Miami.

Despite starting positively, Murray failed to take his early chances and collapsed when serving late in the set. On her seventh opportunity Raducanu drilled a backhand down the line, finally forcing an error from Andreescu after 20 minutes to take the decisive break. Andreescu, meanwhile, faces the seventh seed, Maria Sakkari, as she tries to rediscover her best form. The past few weeks, though, have been a positive step forward for Andreescu and she continued her progress by halting Raducanu’s. The pressure she imposed on Andreescu culminated in a long, brutal game at 4-3. Emma Raducanu has had a challenging enough time consolidating her success since winning the US Open as a teenager but there have been periods when Bianca Andreescu’s career since becoming a teenage grand slam champion has seemed utterly hellish.
