The Sharks have one win in their last 13 games. It was Campbell’s first start in the Edmonton net since a 6-5 loss at the Winnipeg Jets on March 4, as he served as a backup to Stuart Skinner for the last six games.

With 3:47 left, Ekholm walked down the left side and sent a thundering slapper over Reimer’s shoulder to make it 4-4. Still in the second, Mattias Ekholm drove the net and flipped a backhand past Reimer. “We have two video coaches (Jeremy Coupal and Noah Segall) that do a really good job for us,” Woodcroft said. “Obviously this team doesn’t have a hard time scoring–at least as of late,” Bjugstad said post-game of the Oilers. The Sharks would go ahead a few minutes later when Alex Barabanov slammed a long rebound past Campbell. “There’s things to fix tomorrow,” Oilers Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said.
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Darnell Nurse scored at 4:45 of overtime to give the Edmonton Oilers a 5-4 win over the struggling San Jose Sharks on Monday night ...
Ekholm tied it 4-4 with 3:47 left in the third with his second of the night and eighth of the season as he got a pass from McDavid, skated into the left circle and fired a shot past Reimer. The Sharks looked to have tied it 2-2 six minutes into the second on a goal by Andreas Johnsson, but once again itl was called back for goalie interference. Zach Hyman gave the Oilers a 2-1 lead midway through the first, but it was disallowed for goalie interference. It was his eighth. Mattias Ekholm had two goals, Kailer Yamamoto had a goal and an assist, and Nick Bjugstad also scored to help the Oilers win for the sixth time in seven games. It was his 16th.
In a heated race to the playoffs, the Edmonton Oilers will try to bank some points against lesser competition when they host the San Jose Sharks on Monday.

- Just under two minutes after Lorentz’s tying goal, Erik Karlsson gave the Sharks back the lead (3-2) on a beautiful deke that left Jack Campbell confused and looking for his jock. - The Nurse/Ceci pairing needs to make better choices in the defensive zone as they got caught with sloppy breakout passes more than once. - Alexander Barabanov opened the scoring (1-0) on a rebound attempt that beat Campbell cleanly after he kicked Tomas Hertl’s shot straight into the slot. Up to that point, I actually thought that this wasn’t one of Nurse’s better games but he came through with a clutch goal to seal the deal and I was very happy for him when he got the job done. I thought we were going to get a first shot goal against but we get a classic Coupal Bailout to save the start of this hockey game. - Only 1:25 after the Sharks took the lead, Mattias Ekholm tied the game (3-3) with a nifty backhand chip shot after Draisaitl fed him with a pass along the boards with a lane to charge toward the front of the net. Make it goals in back-to-back games for Yamamoto to give him 10 on the year. Even when the boys bounced back with a goal by Mattias Ekholm to knot the score up at three, the Oilers couldn’t get out of their own way nor could they get a save to bail them out after mistakes and it cost them their lead in a horrifying fashion. Fortunately, Darnell Nurse came through with his 4th career OT winner to not only complete the comeback but put the Oilers five points ahead of the Seattle Kraken who have two games in hand. The good news, however, is that Jeremy Coupal’s eagle vision was dialed in as he pulled the trigger on a third coach’s challenge to wipe the goal off the board, paving the way for Ekholm to even things up in the dying minutes. So to see that the Sharks had their legs moving early was incredibly frustrating as the last thing any of us needed was for the Oilers to be chasing again. All day long, I found myself thinking about how the Edmonton Oilers should be able to handily beat the San Jose Sharks, easily securing two big points from a team that they should beat more often than not.

The Beanpot is a huge deal in college hockey, and Levi shined for Northeastern in this year’s tournament. Previous Week: 7th (-1)The Oilers seem to have a little bit of momentum going again with wins in five of their last six, including three straight against the Senators, Stars, and Kraken. Patience matters with goalies.…I don’t think Levi will need that long to adjust to the NHL. And Carey Price won a Calder Cup with the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs before starring with the Montreal Canadiens. [Holloway was hit hard into the boards by a Coachella Valley Firebirds defender](/news/dylan-holloway-will-miss-about-a-month-after-suffering-injury-playing-in-the-ahl). There’s a self-awareness to his game that breeds confidence among teammates.Maybe most importantly, Levi has experience with pressure situations. He posted 16 shutouts, a 1.90 GAA and a .942 save percentage that ranks second-best in NCAA history. Levi was acquired along with a first-round pick in exchange for forward Sam Reinhart.…After watching Levi the past few years, there’s no doubt in my mind he’s a special talent. Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger came from Boston University with similar hype, but required over 50 games of AHL experience before he was ready to step into a No.1 role at the NHL level.Carter Hart started in the AHL before graduating – possibly early in my eyes – to the Philadelphia Flyers. According to our own Jason Gregor, Holloway has been skating in Edmonton and rehabilitating for multiple weeks.
During the era of Pat Maroon and Zack Kassian in Edmonton on their top line, it showed the poor state the team in many facets.
Though Maroon and Kassian gave the Oilers their best years and haven’t replicated their individual success since then, they will be remembered. The Oilers were not in a good state when they resorted to giving enforcers top-six minutes. While Maroon was a top-line player in Edmonton, he benefited from playing with McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. His three-year, $1.95 million AAV contract expired at the end of the 2019-20 season, and he signed a four-year, $3.2 million AAV contract extension months before becoming a free agent. All were arguably much more suited for the top six than Kassian and Maroon. Maroon has played for five teams in his NHL career, but his most successful seasons were as a member of the Oilers. But what it did was put makeup on a pig – Edmonton wasn’t acquiring the right supporting pieces or talent for their top line. It just so happens that Kassian’s rise to the top six came right after Maroon was traded. His 0.32 goals-per-game average (G/GP) and 0.56 points-per-game average (P/GP) with Edmonton rank far above his other stops. Not only did the Oilers not have skilled enough players to challenge for Maroon’s spot on the top line, but the GM also didn’t do the team any favours by keeping or acquiring any help. This showed the state of the team and management’s inability to get offensively-minded players to surround their stars. That’s part of the reason for the massive ups and downs over the past seven seasons.

Kilger and Laflamme were both traded away in separate deals over the next year but Moreau and Cleary became fixtures in Edmonton’s forward group. Salo was making his NHL playoff debut and posted a .926 save percentage in the sweep. One of them was a seven-player swap with the Chicago Blackhawks that saw Boris Mironov, Dean McAmmond, and Jonas Elofssonhead out and Ethan Moreau, Chad Kilger, Dan Cleary, and Christian Laflamme come back in return.
Ekholm scored twice before Nurse netted the overtime winner as the Oilers defencemen led the way in a 5-4 win over the Sharks at Rogers Place on Monday.
I thought the San Jose Sharks played a heck of a game tonight and gave us everything that we could handle, but we didn't play the game we wanted to play in the first two periods and I thought we could do better. "We'll get back here tomorrow and break it down a little bit after watching the film, but like I said, you're not going to have your A-game every night. "That second goal was a good shot, not going to deny that, but I think also the time and space you get playing with those guys obviously helps." We didn't like what were seeing at different points in the game and we had the blender out and we're just trying to find a way in the end. As I said, not perfect, but the players found a way to get the two points. "I heard it was the second multi-goal game of my career, so I guess things are clicking and that's nice. We ask a lot of questions and in the end, when you do your work like that, when the pressure time comes, we have a process that we follow. But past the midway mark of the game, San Jose would have the lead back following a pair of missed assignments by the Oilers defence in a 1:51 span. "They won us the game tonight, so it was great to see," Ekholm added. "For Darnell to get the one in overtime, I thought it was excellent." Kailer Yamamoto had a goal and assist for the Oilers, providing the pass up the wall that led to Nurse's OT winner, while Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins all contributed two helpers in the victory. "We could have been a lot better tonight I thought, but at the same time, these games are hard," Ekholm said.

To suggest this is not what the Oilers expected from Campbell would be a gross understatement.
Nick Bjugstad finds himself at the intersection of preparedness and opportunity. He has defined himself, after all these years, at the exact time he has ...
“A lot of it has to do with what the room is like when you're coming into it,” Bjugstad said of joining the Oilers at the deadline. “I talked to my coach since I was five years old, and he was preaching a lot of the stuff that I'm finally executing. This isn't how I expected it to go.’ I mean, as a as a college kid, you don't even know if you're going to make it to the NHL. When I was a Peewee, I didn't even expect to make the Bantam team the next year. So when you're walking into a room like that, it just makes it that much easier. Today, Bjugstad finds himself at the intersection of preparedness and opportunity. “I had a lot to learn, I think,” began the 30-year-old, a first-round pick who has played 607 games for five different NHL teams. “So I never had that vision of expectation. Cogliano has reached the 1,200-game mark only because he figured out how to stick around as a speedy depth winger who kills penalties and gives up less than what his moderate production has become. But now I come to learn, Bjugstad wasn’t exactly sure who he was as a hockey player either, until recently. I always wanted to learn — it just took me a while to really learn the NHL game. “I'm a big believer that, there might be time delay on things, but everything sorts itself out if you do the right things in your career,” he said.
Now, the highest scoring team in the NHL is an army that comes at opponents in waves.
Ekholm is as staunch as they come defensively, but he is already noticing a little more offensive time and space since joining the Oilers. “I’m just trying to acclimate. Derek Ryan has two goals and newcomer Nick Bjugstad has three goals and one assist. “It’s going to be a team effort come playoffs. It would have been five if Evander Kane hadn’t missed half a season.
