Opinion | Why do so many men dislike Justin Trudeau? (Toronto Star)

Never mind the prime minister's policies — a new poll suggest many male voters simply “don't like him as a person,” Susan Delacourt writes.

“There’s nothing he’s going to be able to do to convince them otherwise, or to even turn down the heat. About 60 per cent of them voted Conservative in the last election, 13 per cent voted for the People’s Party of Canada, seven per cent for the NDP and just three per cent for the Liberals. Coletto says it’s unlikely Trudeau could reverse these people’s views with different policies; they’re not going to view him positively, as the prime minister himself admits, “no matter what he says.” “For men who would feel threatened of their own position, Justin Trudeau seems like perhaps a sellout,” Coletto says. In this poll, Abacus asked the negative voters what it was about Trudeau they disliked, and what words they would use to describe him. Remember, too, Coletto says, that Conservatives dismissed Trudeau in early negative ads with two words: “nice hair.” Those of us who receive angry letters from this segment of the population have long been aware of this “feminization” of Trudeau. Half of this group places itself on the right of the political spectrum, 38 per cent in the centre and nine per cent on the left. “That’s a big difference,” Coletto says. “Men tend to dislike the prime minister more than women,” Coletto says. [Stephen Harper](https://www.thestar.com/topic.stephen_harper.html) wasn’t beloved or loved at any point when he was in office, and people didn’t really like him,” Coletto says, “But it wasn’t as deeply emotional … “No matter what I say, people are going to wonder — if they didn’t vote for me — whether or not they can trust me,” Trudeau told reporters on Friday.

If only men voted, the next election would be a Tory landslide. If only women, Trudeau might get another term.

In 2021, 50 per cent thought it was making Canada better. In 2021, 52 per cent thought it was making Canada better. In 2021, 81 per cent though it was making Canada better. At the same time, Canada is famous for having the world’s largest “gender gap” in terms of concerns about climate change. Women aren’t huge fans of Trudeau, but the dislike wasn’t nearly as intense; just 26 per cent of female respondents checked the “very negative” box. [March 6 Abacus Data poll](https://abacusdata.ca/alberta-politics-deep-dive-march-2023/) showed that 41 per cent of Alberta men favoured UCP Premier Danielle Smith against the 33 per cent who favoured Opposition Leader Rachel Notley. A March 13 Leger poll also uncovered evidence of men and women stampeding to different sides of the political spectrum. Even among under-34 males — a group that has reliably leaned NDP since the 1990s — an incredible 40 per cent expressed an intention to vote Tory. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says vote on elections meddling ... (Toronto Star)

Trudeau punted speculation Tuesday that the minority Liberal government could collapse over a vote on a Conservative-led motion to force his chief of staff, ...

Much still depends on hour-by-hour talks about how the committee’s work would proceed and which officials it would call, Holland said. Speculation raged overnight when the Liberal House leader, Mark Holland, did not explicitly rule out a confidence vote on the Conservative motion. Trudeau said allegations of foreign interference involve matters of national security, and while a parliamentary committee is “important,” it is not the place to deal with all the information the government had, no matter if it is Telford or other officials who are called to testify. Trudeau has asked Johnston to “identify innovative approaches and improvements in the way public agencies work together to combat foreign interference,” and he will continue to work on the issue and submit regular reports that the prime minister said would be shared with the opposition and the public, until Johnston completes that review by Oct. Speaking to reporters on his way to a cabinet meeting, Trudeau said the vote on that motion after question period will not be a so-called “confidence vote” — which is always the case on budgets or other money bills, and can also be the case on key government policies or initiatives if the government chooses to designate them so. Because the Liberals are in a minority government position with 157 seats, they rely on support of the NDP’s 25 MPs to win votes in the House of Commons and retain the confidence of the House.

LILLEY: Trudeau would rather have an election than let Telford testify (Toronto Sun)

The opposition parties want Telford to testify on China's election interference, but Trudeau's Liberals consider making it a confidence vote.

Jagmeet Singh and the NDP have supported the idea of calling Telford to testify at committee but, on Monday, wouldn’t say which way they would vote come Tuesday. That they are also willing to go to such extraordinary lengths to block Telford from answering these questions makes the government look secretive and guilty by default. Trudeau has had these same questions put to him in the House of Commons and he refused to answer. They asserted that Parliament had the right to call any person before a Parliamentary committee. Time and again, the Liberals raised comments by Poilievre made in 2010 when he was defending the Harper government’s opposition to political staff appearing before a Commons committee. That’s how desperate the Liberals are to stop Telford from appearing; they’d rather face voters than have Telford testify.

Between working for Dion and Trudeau, Telford briefly moved to the private sector, working as a consultant at Strategy Corp. The two insiders were considered part of Trudeau’s inner circle and were often seen together with the prime minister. Following the leadership election, Telford then worked as deputy chief of staff for the eventual Liberal leader, Stéphane Dion. From 2004 to 2006, she was chief of staff to Gerard Kennedy, the former Ontario education minister in Dalton McGuinty’s Liberal government. Later, as a political science student at the University of Ottawa, Telford was an active member of the debate club. Later in the morning, the prime minister’s office also released a statement saying Telford has agreed to appear as a witness before a separate House committee also investigating election meddling. A successful campaigner and a masterful political strategist, she also helped Trudeau win the Liberal leadership election in 2013 as campaign chief. She later headed Kennedy’s unsuccessful bid in 2006 to lead the federal Grits.
