Still in the second, Mattias Ekholm drove the net and flipped a backhand past Reimer. “We have two video coaches (Jeremy Coupal and Noah Segall) that do a really good job for us,” Woodcroft said. “Obviously this team doesn’t have a hard time scoring–at least as of late,” Bjugstad said post-game of the Oilers. The Sharks would go ahead a few minutes later when Alex Barabanov slammed a long rebound past Campbell. “There’s things to fix tomorrow,” Oilers Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said.

- Just under two minutes after Lorentz’s tying goal, Erik Karlsson gave the Sharks back the lead (3-2) on a beautiful deke that left Jack Campbell confused and looking for his jock. - The Nurse/Ceci pairing needs to make better choices in the defensive zone as they got caught with sloppy breakout passes more than once. - Alexander Barabanov opened the scoring (1-0) on a rebound attempt that beat Campbell cleanly after he kicked Tomas Hertl’s shot straight into the slot. Up to that point, I actually thought that this wasn’t one of Nurse’s better games but he came through with a clutch goal to seal the deal and I was very happy for him when he got the job done. I thought we were going to get a first shot goal against but we get a classic Coupal Bailout to save the start of this hockey game. - Only 1:25 after the Sharks took the lead, Mattias Ekholm tied the game (3-3) with a nifty backhand chip shot after Draisaitl fed him with a pass along the boards with a lane to charge toward the front of the net. Make it goals in back-to-back games for Yamamoto to give him 10 on the year. Even when the boys bounced back with a goal by Mattias Ekholm to knot the score up at three, the Oilers couldn’t get out of their own way nor could they get a save to bail them out after mistakes and it cost them their lead in a horrifying fashion. Fortunately, Darnell Nurse came through with his 4th career OT winner to not only complete the comeback but put the Oilers five points ahead of the Seattle Kraken who have two games in hand. The good news, however, is that Jeremy Coupal’s eagle vision was dialed in as he pulled the trigger on a third coach’s challenge to wipe the goal off the board, paving the way for Ekholm to even things up in the dying minutes. So to see that the Sharks had their legs moving early was incredibly frustrating as the last thing any of us needed was for the Oilers to be chasing again. All day long, I found myself thinking about how the Edmonton Oilers should be able to handily beat the San Jose Sharks, easily securing two big points from a team that they should beat more often than not.

GAME RECAP: Oilers 5, Sharks 4 (OT) (NHL.com)

Ekholm scored twice before Nurse netted the overtime winner as the Oilers defencemen led the way in a 5-4 win over the Sharks at Rogers Place on Monday.

I thought the San Jose Sharks played a heck of a game tonight and gave us everything that we could handle, but we didn't play the game we wanted to play in the first two periods and I thought we could do better. "We'll get back here tomorrow and break it down a little bit after watching the film, but like I said, you're not going to have your A-game every night. "That second goal was a good shot, not going to deny that, but I think also the time and space you get playing with those guys obviously helps." We didn't like what were seeing at different points in the game and we had the blender out and we're just trying to find a way in the end. As I said, not perfect, but the players found a way to get the two points. "I heard it was the second multi-goal game of my career, so I guess things are clicking and that's nice. We ask a lot of questions and in the end, when you do your work like that, when the pressure time comes, we have a process that we follow. But past the midway mark of the game, San Jose would have the lead back following a pair of missed assignments by the Oilers defence in a 1:51 span. "They won us the game tonight, so it was great to see," Ekholm added. "For Darnell to get the one in overtime, I thought it was excellent." Kailer Yamamoto had a goal and assist for the Oilers, providing the pass up the wall that led to Nurse's OT winner, while Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins all contributed two helpers in the victory. "We could have been a lot better tonight I thought, but at the same time, these games are hard," Ekholm said.

Back in the line-up for a second straight game, on a 6-man D crew this game. Unable to cut out a key pass on the 4-3. Respectively his 10th goal and 10th assist of the season, in the process becoming the 10th Oilers forward with double-digit goals. All 3 were ugly goals — down too early on a shot over his shoulder, a going-wide shot that bounced off the inside of his blocker arm and into the net, and an ineffectual dive on a 2-on-1 where the shot slid under him and into the middle of the net. Was twice robbed by Reimer on a late powerplay, firing a pair of one-timers from his favourite spot that were foiled by a flailing glove save that just deflected the puck over the crossbar, and then seconds later by a diving stop by Reimer that defied belief. Some chaos on his watch, but plenty of good moments as well, most notably the game-winning goal scored on a breakaway with just 15 seconds remaining in OT. What I got wrong: Jack Campbell hasn't given Oilers a goaltending ... (The Athletic)

This season has been an unmitigated disaster for Campbell — and his start Monday was just the latest example.

[Ville Husso](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/ville-husso-tEcH154zJncfzUax/), but [Detroit](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/redwings/) got the jump and traded for him early. [Maple Leafs](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/leafs/), who desperately need to win a playoff round, barely talked to Campbell ahead of free agency. He has four more years on his contract and a buyout in June keeps him on the books until 2031. Campbell could be one of the better goalies in the league next season. [Mike Smith](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/mike-smith-OA1IAC41fSvKePEZ/) had some incredible highs, most notably his 2021 season when he finished seventh in Vezina Trophy voting. He had a .914 save percentage with the Maple Leafs and saved 10 goals above expected in all situations — which was good for 13th in the NHL. They were drawn to [Darcy Kuemper](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/darcy-kuemper-jYYZbHdfpfcyLc9p/) dating back to the 2021 offseason but [opted to prioritize pursuing Campbell](https://theathletic.com/3669811/2022/10/08/edmonton-oilers-chychrun-trade-mailbag/) when both goalies hit the open market last summer. A shot that went between his arm and chest; that was [Andreas Johnsson](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/andreas-johnsson-qdIKb6yAxhyVHcVX/)’s disallowed marker. A muffin that beat him from the high slot — an [Erik Karlsson](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/erik-karlsson-wfs21WC1MyiivfTP/) tally. He lost his starter’s job to rookie [Stuart Skinner](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/stuart-skinner-KlvXBG0WO4nYVVkG/) weeks ago and hasn’t posted a save percentage over .900 in any of his last seven games. The [Oilers](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/oilers/), blessed with all their firepower and a lethal power play, just needed someone to regularly take the net and make the saves required of him — and maybe a few big ones here and there. To suggest this is not what the Oilers expected from Campbell would be a gross understatement.

Sharks and Oilers Could Make Huge Campbell and Karlsson Trade (The Hockey Writers)

It’s a $4.2 million swing that the Oilers would have to account for — meaning they would need to drop that amount of money from their roster for next season — and it’s a lot to pay just to cut bait from a goalie who isn’t performing very well, but could improve. In the end, the Oilers would be giving up something like a first-round pick in 2024, Jack Campbell, Evan Bouchard, and Xavier Bourgault to get Erik Karlsson at $9.2 million per season for four more years. The Sharks weren’t willing to retain more than 20% and that meant a $9.2 million Karlsson coming to Edmonton, which the Oilers simply couldn’t afford. The first question some will ask is why the Sharks would realistically take Campbell if he’s so overpaid and seems to be so unproductive. Campbell has the ability to be really good and really bad. Jack Campbell headed to San Jose in the offseason? (NHL Trade Rumors)

If the Edmonton Oilers want to make a trade for defenseman Erik Karlsson, they will have to unload goalie Jack Campbell.
