Drew Timme, Gonzaga Bulldogs oust TCU Horned Frogs from ... (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

Mike Miles Jr. has big game for TCU, but Gonzaga uses big second half to advance and end Horned Frogs' season.

The Horned Frogs held Gonzaga to just 36% shooting and 2-of-14 from the 3-point line. A free throw by Strawther made it 35-33 with 1:10 left in the half. The Bulldogs made one more push leaning on the free throw line as they made the most of TCU being in the bonus. TCU went just 2-of-7 from the free throw line in the second half while the Bulldogs went 7-of-10. In the end Gonzaga had better execution in the second half. Gonzaga led 6-4 as Timme scored the Bulldogs’ first six points, but an O’Bannon 3-pointer would put TCU ahead and the Horned Frogs didn’t look back. His second 3-pointer of the half set the stage for a frantic final close to the game. The Bulldogs grabbed two offensive rebounds on that possession to set up his long distance shot and forced a timeout by Dixon. Both faced double teams the entire night with Gonzaga trying to trap Miles on every ball screen while Timme got the same treatment from the Horned Frogs on every post touch. “It hurts losing in the second round in another close game,” Miles said. “The threes hurt us, the inside hurt us with Timme, but we battled and we fought. The game lived up to the billing.

The Zags are now set for a matchup against the No. Much of the second half was a back-and-forth affair, but Gonzaga managed to take control of the game with a little under nine minutes remaining, and the Bulldogs were able to hold off the Horned Frogs and their several late-game runs. The Bulldogs trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half and were down five going into halftime, but an excellent second half from Timme, who finished with 28 points and eight rebounds, sparked a comeback.

Rasir Bolton started it with a 3-point play, Malachi Smith followed with a 3-pointer and Timme scored inside. Bolton finished with 17 points, two 3-pointers and hit 5 of 7 free throws, including a pair with 42 seconds remaining. Timme hit his third 3-pointer of the season to bump Gonzaga’s lead to 61-55.

Over the final, frenetic 40 seconds, UCLA made two steals, scored the last five points and left Zags star Adam Morrison nearly crying on the court. “I think he’s going to go down as one of the all-time great college players in the history of the game,” Few said. “I thought TCU was a highly educated school, and they didn’t sound so smart with their comments pregame, so you know. But while the Gonzaga big man worked for every one of his 12 baskets and his eight rebounds, TCU’s bigs were all in foul trouble as the game wound down. They came at the Zags in waves, trying to stop Timme with every big man on the roster. “And he still wasn’t supposed to shoot that three.

One of the best players the NCAA Tournament has seen over the last three years wouldn't be denied a trip back to the Sweet 16.

“(Few) said that he's coached a lot of NBA players and that I'm one,” Miles said. This game was always going to be a little personal for Timme, even before the pregame comments. “He shines on any stage.” That’s now nine NCAA Tournament games with 20 or more points and it ties him with six other players for the most all-time. “Throw a little lighter fluid on the fire if you wish. “Well, I saw some nice things on the internet before, maybe taking some shots at us, me and our program,” Timme said.

I think he’s going to go down with the amount of success and the wins and all he’s been able to do. He happily took on a variety of other roles in the second half – while still carrying much of the scoring load – dishing out two assists and pulling down six rebounds after the break. Miles Jr., an All-Big-12 Second Team guard, scored a team-high 24 points and had success both getting to the rim and drawing fouls. … I feel like it swung the game in their favor, but I don’t think that’s what made them win.” Gifts processed in this system are not tax deductible, but are predominately used to help meet the local financial requirements needed to receive national matching-grant funds. “I don’t think no one was expecting him to shoot in it,” TCU guard Mike Miles Jr. The Bulldogs (30-5) and Bruins (31-5) will play Thursday evening at T-Mobile Arena for a spot in the Elite Eight. That’s eight in a row, which is just an incredible testament to our program and what we’ve been able to do these last eight years.” It was the ninth 20-point game of Timme’s NCAA Tournament career. Listen, I think he’s the best player in college basketball. (Tyler Tjomsland/The Spokesman-Review) “That’s what it takes to win,” Timme said.

Gonzaga, Drew Timme and a program legend who always shows up ... (The Athletic)

Timme became the seventh player to score at least 20 points in nine NCAA Tournament games, leading the Zags over TCU.

“Sometimes it takes a while to figure out how to fight,” Timme says after his team figures that out once again and reaches the Sweet 16 for the eighth straight time. It wore out Grand Canyon in the first round as much as it out-talented the Lopes. It shuddered when TCU started out with a speed and general meanness that evoked Baylor in the 2021 national championship game, and then it regrouped, holding the Horned Frogs without a field goal for a four-minute stretch and outrebounding the Horned Frogs by six after halftime. Timme checks out of the game with 32 seconds left and waves to the crowd to encourage their adulation. He strokes his mustache as he backpedals to the defensive end. He hugs his mom and his dad. But there is also no guardrail separating what Gonzaga’s star feels and what he says, and this is how he feels at the end of a long day. He says he thought TCU was, as he puts it, a “highly educated school.” “I definitely took exception to that,” he says. He plays a team filled with guys he knows from high school hoops, and hears it loud and clear when one of them — one of his buddies, actually — says it won’t be anything overwhelmingly new for TCU to deal with a big like Timme. It is his third made 3 of the season. “When we need him the most,” Zags forward [Anton Watson](https://theathletic.com/college-basketball/player/anton-watson-9AETpXH9qVtqEZCF/) says, “he shows up.” [TCU](https://theathletic.com/college-basketball/team/tcu-horned-frogs-college-basketball/) is no exception, before and during and after.

A long weekend of college hoops ended Sunday night with Gonzaga's second-round matchup with the Big 12's Texas Christian University.

“Somebody’s going to be disappointed at the end,” Johnson said, chuckling. Hunter Sallis’ two foul shots with seven-tenths of a second left gave the Zags a six-point lead. Gifts processed in this system are not tax deductible, but are predominately used to help meet the local financial requirements needed to receive national matching-grant funds. “The key tonight is can Gonzaga get enough stops,” Johnson said with 6 minutes, 30 seconds left in the first half and the Zags trailing by nine. At least his halftime comments to Andy Katz include this one: “If we make our free throws it’s probably an even game right now,” Few said after his team was 7 of 13 in the first 20 minutes and trailed 38-33. • As an aside, Mark Few might have taken a lesson from the Johnson school of commentary. From there, the Horned Frogs stretched the lead to … Gonzaga was favored by 4.5 heading into the game.
