[Does spring always start on the same day?](https://www.space.com/881-date-changed-start-spring.html) In most years, the first day of spring lands on March 20. However, in 2020 the spring equinox arrived on March 19. “Since the seasons are defined as beginning at strict 90-degree intervals, these positional changes affect the time Earth reaches each 90-degree location in its orbit around the sun.” And some major religious holidays — including [Easter](https://www.countryliving.com/life/inspirational-stories/a26430267/how-is-easter-date-determined/) and [Passover](https://www.chabad.org/holidays/passover/pesach_cdo/aid/871715/jewish/Passover-2019-Pesach.htm) — are timed to be celebrated after the spring equinox and after a specific spring moon cycle. First day of spring 2023: What to know about the vernal equinox (mlive.com)

Whether the weather feels spring-like or not, a new season is set to begin on Monday, March 20, 2023.

Another fascinating equinox fact: Both the spring and fall equinoxes bring about the chance to witness zodiacal light, a phenomenon that causes an eerie cone of light to appear over the sunrise or sunset point in the fully dark nighttime sky. Due to time zone differences, the Almanac says, there won’t be a March 21 equinox in mainland U.S. Equinoxes occur twice a year, in March and September. The spring equinox signifies a time to clear the space in our emotional and spiritual home as well. In shamanic and other cultures where attunement to nature is ingrained in the rhythm of day-to-day life, the equinox is a natural progression of mother earth bringing balance to our world. In Buddhist culture spring cleaning also plays a major role in ancient Buddhist purification rituals. It was believed that sweeping up dust and removing clutter would prevent ill-fortune in the upcoming year. We get intentional about the seeds and dreams we want to create in life. Spring cleaning and space clearing paves the way for turning over a new leaf. In Judeo-Christian traditions, spring cleaning dates back to the liberation of Israelites from Egypt, now celebrated as the holiday of Passover. It marks the beginning of spring in the northern Hemisphere. The spring equinox marks the turning point when daylight begins to win out over darkness. There’s a plethora of choices when it comes to detox programs. The length of the day and night is almost equal wherever you are in the world, with the sun shining directly on the equator.
