Jason Robertson scored the overtime winner for his second goal of the game in the Dallas Stars' 6-5 win over the host Calgary Flames on Saturday.

Andersson and Weegar, currently partnered on the Flames’ top defence duo, combined for a grand total of six points against the Central Division-leading Stars. “We had looks. “Tough one,” Andersson groaned. On what started as an odd-man rush, Robertson toe-dragged around Rasmus Andersson and roofed a backhander. And, of course, a DeLorean would have been handy to take another crack at the ending. After 1:58 of action, the Stars had already potted a pair. “And we have to start making that play.” The Flames have now collected 15 loser points. Article content

Is the NHL Draft the perfect opportunity for the Calgary Flames to ... (The Win Column)

Looking at potential trades the Calgary Flames can make to move Dan Vladar during the 2023 NHL Draft to strengthen their draft position.

He just so happens to be the lowest man in the proverbial pecking order of NHL goalies in Calgary’s system. This draft offers a class that’s as deep as ever and could offer much more NHL talent than the average. On top of that, an early third-rounder versus a later pick in the same round this year could be as substantial a difference as a second-round to fourth-round drop in next year’s draft class. Whether you agree or disagree with these proposals, the Flames are coming up to a pivotal decision within their franchise with the handling of Wolf. [Jordan Binnington](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/b/binnijo01.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=thewincolumn.ca&utm_campaign=2023-03-17_hr) last offseason and the puck stopper has done much more scrapping and playing tough than stopping pucks. The team looks destined for the highest odds at Connor Bedard and also hold significant draft capital this year after acquiring a conditional first-round pick with [Jonathan Quick](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/q/quickjo01.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=thewincolumn.ca&utm_campaign=2023-03-17_hr) in a trade that sent [Joonas Korpisalo](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/k/korpijo01.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=thewincolumn.ca&utm_campaign=2023-03-17_hr) to the Los Angeles Kings at the deadline. selection that Columbus holds is on the condition that the Kings make the playoffs which is almost a certainty at this point. Beyond the long-term strategy, goaltending has been a headline in St. Brad Treliving has a golden opportunity to move Vladar at the draft. [Jacob Markstrom](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/m/marksja02.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=thewincolumn.ca&utm_campaign=2023-03-17_hr) and [Dan Vladar](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/v/vladada01.html?utm_medium=linker&utm_source=thewincolumn.ca&utm_campaign=2023-03-17_hr) underperforming compared to last season. The price may be slightly steep but the market at the deadline was all over the board and Seattle has deep draft capital this year. Next season, it’s time for the undersized goalie to take his place as a full time NHLer.

This is the third and final meeting in this season series. The Stars are slated to go with 11 forwards and seven defenders. But the results have not been there consistently, and the clock is ticking. It’s tinkering that makes a lot of sense given the results we’ve seen. The new lines are a bit odd, in the sense that there’s a well-defined top six (the Backlund and Lindholm lines) and bottom six (Kadri and Ruzicka). We’re expecting Jacob Markstrom to start in net, making his ninth start in a row for the Flames.

"It's really tight right now and it's getting closer to the end of the regular season," Roope Hintz said. "Getting in the hole in the first period and playing behind again just like the other night, it's not a good recipe for us," Stars coach Peter DeBoer told NHL.com. Coleman, from Plano, product, has five goals and four assists for nine points in his previous 20 contests against the Stars. Take just two weeks ago at American Airlines Arena while deadlocked 4-4 in the third, Toffoli played the role of hero scoring at the 19:53 mark that held up as the winner. Rookie Wyatt Johnston was the lone goal getter for the Stars, while Jake Oettinger made 28 stops. "If you think about it, we've been in so many one-goal games this year. When we play well, we do get the bounces, too. "A lot of bounces the other way but at the same time, if you do the little things right and play the right way, and when the team plays the way we can, that's when the bounces come.

Flames Sunday Census: Polling Calgary Flames fans on what final outcome on the season would be considered a success for the team.

The flip side to the playoff argument is that the Flames shouldn’t even be in it at all. However, the path to the Cup is long and grueling, and it’d be a shame to see them get bounced without at least improving on their playoff result from last season. In many ways, just seeing the Flames put together a season-changing series of games with their playoff hopes on the line would be inspirational enough and would be something they haven’t given the fans all season. That said, from a fan perspective, is that enough to call the season a success? Right now, the Flames’ direction as a team is to do everything they can to make the playoffs. Now, with just a handful of games remaining in the season, the Flames are very much a playoff bubble team.

Breaking down the Calgary Flames' potential playoff opponents if ... (The Win Column)

Looking at which playoff opponents the Calgary Flames might play if they're able to get into the second wild card spot for the playoffs.

The proof is in the stats and it’s a fact this season that Calgary has played on average, much poorer against teams weaker than them. Their last matchup just before Christmas, the Flames fell in overtime 4–3 after scoring 2 unanswered goals in the third period. Without Kaprizov for three to four weeks it seems as though the Wild are headed for a slight decline in points percentage headed into the playoffs. The Flames have played tight, high-scoring games against the Stars all year. The Nashville Predators, who are ahead of the Flames by one point currently made themselves relevant again by going 5–3–2 in their last 10 games for a combined 12 out of a possible 20 points. The team has had moments of turbulence this season, but much like Vegas have been the beneficiary of the new coach effect with Peter DeBoer. The Winnipeg Jets are 4–4–2 in their last ten, attaining 10 out of a possible 20 points. The team has the potential to finish out the regular season strong and earn the chance to play the hockey games everyone said their roster is built for, the playoffs. Dallas has played close games, and had some blowouts, posting a 7–3–0 record in their last 10. The team’s 4–3–3 in their last ten games. That win marked the Flames’ first win in T-Mobile Arena in franchise history. The team has had underperforming stars, goaltending woes, confidence issues, line combinations that seem to rotate more than a merry-go-round and plenty of talk about the overall mismanagement of prospects and the coaching of the team.

The good, bad and ugly of the Calgary Flames: Games 66-70 (Flames Nation)

We got incredible performances in wins against the Senators and Golden Knights. We watched very disappointing efforts against bad teams in the Ducks and Coyotes ...

That does it for this edition of the Good, Bad, and Ugly. It’s a minor miracle that the Flames are still in the hunt for a spot in the post season. The Flames are the most difficult team to figure out in the NHL. It would be great for Kadri to be one of those players who stirs the pot and drags his team into the fight like Tkachuk had done in Calgary for years. And then they lose two games to two of the worst teams in the NHL in Anaheim and Arizona, where they put out a couple lifeless, embarrassing performances. Darryl Sutter has recognized that as well as he demoted Kadri to the bottom two forward lines. He is having a remarkable season and has established himself as the Flames best prospect. Kadri has been struggling mightily since the all-star break, but this last five game segment has been the most alarming part of his play. It sucks to put Kadri in the bad category this week. He has started eight straight games for the Flames posting a record of 4-3-2. He is back to being a steady presence in the Flames crease. We got incredible performances in wins against the Senators and Golden Knights.

Beyond the Boxscore: Calgary Flames go back in forth with Dallas ... (Flames Nation)

The number one goal for any home game is for the team to give the fans...

In The Crease – Not all the goals were Markstrom’s fault – the defence let a few too many chances through – but he still didn’t make enough when he needed to. Player Spotlight – Rasmus Andersson – Excuse me I’m still replaying that glorious stretch pass to Nick Ritchie for the fourth goal in my head. Mangiapane (61.83%) still looked effective with his new linemates – they really pushed the pace on the Stars to begin the match. Kadri actually got a promotion this game off a line with Lucic (DNP) and Lewis (46.15%) to one with Dubé and Duehr (46.54%). This was a match that saw everyone participate in a few good chances but not play well enough to stonewall the other team. If you just look at the percentages, you have no idea how much he was involved in vs. I get a feeling the lines are going to keep changing so the skill players need to make sure they are ready to play with anyone on any night. You just never know if it’s a shoot the lights out one or a super trap one. Dillon Dubé (41.87%) and the man who’s publicly getting shown he’s in the doghouse – Nazem Kadri (43.88%) – were the bottom ranked forwards. When out against the top of the Central Stars they constantly pushed play towards Oettinger. Take that on a Saturday night and the dial should be cranked to eleven. It’s a Team Game – When everything is within a stone’s throw of 50% you know you had an even match-up.

The Defining Dozen: Analyzing the Flames' remaining schedule (Calgary Sun)

Calgary Flames bench boss Darryl Sutter, after yet another overtime loss, was asked about his message to his men. Advertisement 2. Story continues below.

What we know … What’s there to wonder other than … And will the Predators, with a depleted roster and the NHL’s busiest schedule over the closing stretch, already be out of gas? (Depending on the results between now and then, the Flames might be, too.) or wonder: In what should be the biggest game of the season, you were likely hoping for better news — the Flames have lost four in a row in Friendly Manitoba. or wonder: The Flames have too often struggled against the cellar-dwellers, and this is the prime example. Since signing in Calgary as a free agent, Markstrom has posted a 9-3-1 record and .921 save percentage in 13 clashes with the Canucks. The veteran centre has racked up 26 career points as a guest to the Saddledome, the third-highest total among active NHLers. “I think we all believe in what we have in the room. They are 4-3-0 in afternoon affairs, although they delivered a dud in the latest — a Family Day faceoff with the Flyers. “Nobody is going to feel sorry for us. Why aren't the Calgary Flames in a playoff spot? (Flames Nation)

We knew that the Calgary Flames would be a different team in 2022-23 than they were in 2021-22. The club lost scoring forwards Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan ...

In terms of fewest expected goals against, the Flames are fourth at five-on-five and third in all situations. Anyway, we expect the “puck luck” metrics – a team’s shooting or save percentage – to ebb and flow over the course of the season. In terms of most expected goals for, the Flames are fifth at five-on-five and eighth in all situations. In general, the expectation is for these metrics to “normalize” over time, so you would expect periods of “hot” play with high percentages and times of “cold” play. Over the course of a season, different elements of a team’s game go hot and cold. Heck, aside from a short part of the season, they’ve never been below-average in preventing high-danger chances. So, in theory, teams could pepper their opponents with a barrage of low-danger shots and accumulate enough shot quality through these low quality shots that their expected goals for would eventually become respectable (or even quite good). Conversely, they would have the puck a lot by minimizing the time and danger of their opponent’s possession. They’ve allowed the second-fewest shots in the NHL (both five-on-five and all situations) behind Carolina. Then, things like Scoring Chances (shot attempts from the home plate area), High Danger Chances (shot attempts from even closer in, and usually also things like rebounds and rush chances from specific areas) and Expected Goals (a blend of shot volume and quality) as a way of measuring dangerous possession. We knew that the Calgary Flames would be a different team in 2022-23 than they were in 2021-22. With a dozen games left in the schedule, they’re four points out of a playoff spot.
