Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Ottawa Senators – Game #69 Preview ... (Maple Leafs Hot Stove)

Preview, analysis, quotes and TV info for the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Ottawa Senators game on 3/18/23 at Canadian Tire Centre.

They are going to be a way different team tonight than they were then. We have to do what we do. He has missed a bunch of goals earlier in the season that in previous years would be going in for him. Everyone knows that they and Tampa are going to play each other in the first round. His numbers don’t show up well here in the last couple of starts that he has had, but coming off of the injury, he didn’t play for a long period of time. You are just looking for him to continue to build his game and get some more game reps. We have to be at our best. It is a good chance for us to give Gio a break here. We have a lot of respect for this team. His original stay might have been a longer one if he had a little more puck luck initially (including a disallowed goal in Detroit) to gather some early momentum as he flashed some promise with his size, pace, work rate, and willingness to drive the net. The rookie goaltender is trying to shake off a blooper of a game-losing goal against Colorado on Thursday: [Leafs](https://mapleleafshotstove.com/) will return to 12 and 6 while bringing in fresh legs in the form of Justin Holl — who was scratched last due to the rotation underway on defense, not for performance reasons — as well as Wayne Simmonds and callup Bobby McMann.

Toronto opened the scoring with McCabe scoring his first as a Leaf when he beat Sogaard with a shot from the slot early in the period. We’ve been talking a lot about how he hasn’t been busy enough in terms of the workload in the games he’s played of late here. Samsonov and his wife are expecting a baby “any day now.” Mark Giordino and Erik Gustafssinn were scratched for rest. It’s a lot of fun watching him get the puck off.” … They threw a lot at him, a lot of traffic at the same time, and he handled it really well.” Obviously, his release, it’s one of the prettiest releases I’ve seen in a long time. “He’s a great player,” said Matthews of Jarnkrok. A lot of emotion out there, a lot of energy in the building. “I thought for stretches we carried the play. “A marathon of a game,” said Murray. “Another night where I thought we deserved to win,” said Tkachuk. Despite Dominating, Ottawa Senators Fall to Toronto Maple Leafs 5 ... (Silver Seven)

Ottawa outshot Toronto 52-29 but couldn't get the win.

- I’m not sure why Ridly Greig was down in the AHL for a second time for so long. TJ Brodie went to the box with 46 seconds left, and with the last-ditch effort, Giroux was once again there to get the primary assist. Ottawa should’ve easily won this, but they couldn’t convert all of their chances, there were some small defensive breakdowns, and Søgaard wasn’t up to the task. They ended the second period with a whopping 37 shots but just two goals to show for it—the story of the Senators season. The Senators deserved the point, but they wanted the extra one in overtime. It was a perfect opportunity to score two quick goals to tie it up, but they couldn’t do much to capitalize. At that point, it would’ve been easy for the Senators to give up as they were down by two and the bounces didn’t seem to be going their way. It was strange to see Søgaard look so small in the net despite his 6’7 frame. Although he skyed it over the net, the next time Ottawa came down the ice on the penalty kill, it was Tim Stützle who was able to convert on a brilliantly placed shot: It was an excellent reminder of how amazing it is to have Stützle on the penalty kill. The Senators almost scored in a similar way to McCabe, as Watson had a glorious chance in the slot after a rebound. It was a pretty hilarious goal for him to allow, then again, that was probably harder than it looked because nobody seemed to know where it was.

NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs, Canucks, Rangers, Blues, Bruins (The Hockey Writers)

NHL rumors: Maple Leafs don't have Samsonov, Rangers with tough free agency decisions, Bergeron and Krejci back with Bruins next season.

Among them, the New York Rangers and [Patrick Kane](https://thehockeywriters.com/docs/patrick-kane) will have to decide if they want this relationship to continue. At the same time, O’Reilly could make as much as $7 million on the free-agent market (similar to Nazem Kadri’s deal with the Calgary Flames). He writes that Kane will have to take a significant pay cut if he wants to remain with the organization beyond this season. [Luke Fox says ](https://twitter.com/lukefoxjukebox/status/1637128600963907584?s=20)part of the reason was to simply give Samsonov some rest and reward a prospect with some NHL pay. [told reporters](https://twitter.com/lukefoxjukebox/status/1637128600963907584?s=20) in Ottawa that goaltender Ilya Samsonov is still dealing with some minor things and that his wife is expecting soon. The Vancouver Canucks want to add a third-line center if they can clear cap space, the New York Rangers have some tough decisions to make with Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko, and will Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci come back for another season with the Bruins?

'A lot of emotions': Matt Murray stands tall for Maple Leafs in ... (Sportsnet.ca)

With the Maple Leafs under siege early and often against the Senators, Matt Murray came up big on breakaways, odd-man rushes and cross-seam plays.

Both sides had a lot of fans in the crowd, and both sides were real loud. He only found out Saturday when a reporter relayed the quote. He’s just on to the next shot and on to the next play.” So, it was a real fun game,” Murray said. A lot of energy. A lot of traffic at the same time. He says it was nice to see the security guards and reconnect with the Sens staff that took care of him through last winter’s rehabs. A lot of energy in the building. “It was a really exciting game. We've been talking about how he hasn't been busy in terms of the workload. And Toronto escaped the first 20 minutes with a 1-1 scoreboard. A lot of emotion out there.
