Beyond the Boxscore: Calgary Flames don't let golden opportunity ... (Flames Nation)

From start to finish the Calgary Flames were in control of the poor Ottawa Senators. Hope was faint for them to start after playing in the 8 p.m. MT slot ...

xGF% – When they play rough I’m one of the first to criticize so when they play well – and even get goals – I’ll give them a shout-out too. He made a great pass from the right side of the ice on the Hanifin goal too, so much so that even Sutter mentioned he made that play… Player Spotlight – Elias Lindholm – I didn’t mention him at all because by counting totals he wasn’t top of the board, but he was playing on a higher level from my perspective in that match. Every single one of the 12 forwards had a ratio of 58% or higher – one of the better nights this season for them. The one mishap goal aside he was solid and didn’t falter. 1.40 expected goals against and the goal was indeed considered high danger. Not a strong night from the Senators. All-in a solid performance from the Calgary Flames. Calgary did the right thing and kept the peddle down on them right to the final horn. Tanev (82.76%) led all defenceman with a whopping 32 shot attempts happening while he was on the ice vs. It’s a Team Game – Top sign from this was the extra push Calgary had with the lead in the third period. Calgary typically puts forth this effort they just have not had the fortune to have everything – scoring and saving mostly – line up.

Out of sorts Senators need to find their way immediately to stay alive ... (Ottawa Sun)

It’s just…we’re not sharing pucks, we’re not breaking the puck out, we’re turning pucks over when we shouldn’t, and it ends up in the back of the net.” Sunday’s game turned quickly when the Flames’ Rasmus Andersson opened the scoring on a power play breakdown. “The power play has won us so many games and these are the guys, this is the motor of our team, the pulse. In consecutive games, the Senators have allowed shorthanded goals, sucking the life out of what has been the source of so much success. Overall, the Senators have given up 10 shorthanded goals, the most in the NHL. “But I’ve got all the trust in the world in the leadership of these guys. The Senators will be doing all that with a pair of 22-year-old goaltenders, Mads Sogaard and Kevin Mandolese, who have played a combined 14 NHL games. After that, the Senators will return home to face the defending champion Colorado Avalanche Thursday and the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday. Article content

Flames tackle Senators to end home woes (Deadspin)

Markstrom and Backlund crossed their wires, and the puck bounced right to Stutzle with a gaping net for his 32nd goal of the campaign. Backlund's cross-ice pass set up Lindholm for a tap-in tally to notch his 19th of the season and 200th in his career. He joined a rush, and Backlund's feed as he reached the slot left Andersson a golden opportunity to bury his ninth goal of the season.

Maybe none of these goalies would be a significant upgrade on the Sogaard/Mandolese duo. Goaltending has hardly been the main culprit in any of these losses for Ottawa, but it seems a touch unfair to place any playoff expectations on the shoulders of a pair of unproven, 22-year-old goalies. Smith did not provide a postgame update on either player Sunday, but the manner in which both players left the ice certainly leaves their status for Tuesday’s game in Edmonton in doubt.)

Darryl Sutter and Brad Treliving's Flames future? Matthew Coronato ... (The Athletic)

In this edition of the McKenzie mailbag, we take your questions on Sutter, Treliving, Coronato and more.

When the season started I didn’t think there was any way this team would be on the outside looking in. In all of these, Coronato’s statistics are up to date. You will notice that the quality of players — along with so many other factors — will vary here. But all my focus right now is on this playoff run and on the guys here. In fact, I asked him myself if he was leaning toward staying or signing. But ultimately, I think the Flames will have to mostly stay the course, although I feel they need to add speed to the lineup and at least one forward who can go to the net and get goals. If Treliving stays, it wouldn’t surprise if he held firm on the core, which has shown at times this season that they are good players. The Flames’ biggest and more realistic trade chips will be players on expiring contracts. How realistic to expect Huberdeau to bounce back to a 100-point player next season? Treliving says his contract status had “zero impact” on how he approached the trade deadline. Seems to imply to me that he’s not trusted to steer the team into a particular lane anymore. Our crystal ball, and brain, endured a ton of stress to make this work.
