Oscars 2023: Naatu Naatu song from Indian film RRR primed to ... (BBC News)

Telugu song Naatu Naatu is up against heavyweights like Lady Gaga and Rihanna at the 2023 Academy Awards.

Nearly a year after its release, the song is still going strong with the audiences. In past interviews, the director has confessed that people called him "crazy" for shooting in a country on the verge of war. Ram Charan and NTR Jr then turn to take on each other and a dance competition between the two heroes follows. Since the film's release last year, fans have been trying to replicate the intricate foot swivels and catchy dance moves. Rakshit said he made 30 versions of the signature step in which NTR Jr and Ram Charan dance with their arms around each other. "Each of them [the actors] have their own style," Rajamouli said in an earlier interview.

Unlike its fellow nominees for best original song, "Naatu Naatu" was central to the film from which it came; the song pops up an hour into RRR, soundtracking a fierce dance battle between the film's main characters and a group of stuffy British colonizers. Keeravani and Chandrabose received the Oscar statuettes, but the success of "Naatu Naatu" had many authors, from the stars who danced to it in RRR (N.T. and Ram Charan) to the vocalists who performed it (Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava) to the choreographer who helped make its video a viral sensation (Prem Rakshith).

Watch Performance of 'Naatu Naatu' From 'RRR' Electrifiying Oscars (Variety)

A performance of 'Naatu Naatu' from the film 'RRR,' with more than 20 dancers, had a predictably galvanizing effect on the Academy Awards ceremony.

The “Naatu Naatu” performance took place about an hour and a half into the telecast, but viewers didn’t have to wait that long to get a taste of the dancing that captivated audiences in the U.S. “RRR” follows two patriotic but philosophically opposed men who team up to rescue a girl from British colonial officials in 1920s Delhi. Keeravani, who scored the film as well as co-writing its many songs, and lyricist Chandrabose are the honorees for their work on the S.S. Singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava recreated their vocals from the movie’s soundtrack, as a troupe of more than 20 dancers had their exuberant way with the choreography that became the year’s biggest movie-music meme.
