Toronto's John Tavares got more than just a two-minute penalty for slashing Edmonton's Vincent Desharnais on Saturday night.

"Obviously, I've got to be better in that scenario," Tavares said Sunday. The Maple Leafs won the game 7-4 with Tavares scoring twice in the second period including the eventual game-winning goal. The Maple Leafs' captain was assessed a $5,000 fine — the maximum allowed by the league's collective bargaining agreement — on Sunday for the act.

They are a team pushing hard to remain in the playoff hunt and in the mix. It just makes a little more sense for me to give him a little more time and give Murray some more consistency in the net. Watching the game back from yesterday with them against the Rangers, I know they didn’t get the win in the end, but to me, they were dominant in that game offensively and gave up nothing defensively. I think we have looked the same as we were in Buffalo a lot. Looking back on the game after the fact, the way I felt about it is that there was a combination. It was a really positive sign that the more he played in that game, he started to look like he found some confidence and found a rhythm there. You get the combination of the two, which is why we were able to jump ahead the way that we were. I thought he was solid there for a good chunk of time that allowed us to really pull away in the game and maintain our lead. Keefe: You want to see guys be disciplined — especially in a game like that — and maintain their composure, and yet at times, emotions are high. There is so much happening in such a little amount of time that he is able to process and turn into action way more efficiently than the opponent. He may fake it himself, and in some cases, it might confuse a player who will have talked himself out of option A and moved to option B. We can go with just the six guys, and then if we get an injury at a key time, all of a sudden, you have to play someone who hasn’t played.

He said he wants to play for a contender, and the Cowboys are just that. The 27-year-old is expected to command a salary in the range of $15-20M in free agency this summer. I wouldn’t be surprised if Curry gets a slight raise on his current deal if it’s only for a year or two, but I would be surprised if he gets a raise and a three- or four-year contract. If he hopes to find a deal for more than the minimum this summer, the 33-year-old will have to prove he’s healthy and can still contribute at a high level—he’s running out of time to do so. I realize Harden will be 34 this summer, and the Rockets have a team full of young players, but I really believe he might opt out and sign a four-year, maximum-salary contract with his former team, regardless of how the Sixers do in the playoffs. He only played one more game for the Heat before he was moved to San Antonio in a salary dump. Ultimately, the team has a log jam in the infield, meaning they can leverage some of those assets to bolster other spots on the team, notably ones of weakness. This is just a bad look for the umpire and the NCAA. In doing so, he crossed the 30-goal threshold for the second time as a Maple Leaf and fifth time in his 14-year NHL career. Unless the Memphis Grizzlies don't plan on having him back for the playoffs, he essentially needs to be on the court for them in the coming days. But the move shows the Cowboys believe they're a championship contender, willing to acquire the upgrades required for a deep run. Tavares absorbed a series of cross checks from Desharnais before retaliating with a spirited two-hand chop to the Desharnais’ gloved hand.
