PolySeSouvient says the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights and other groups are intentionally sowing disinformation to undermine efforts at enshrining a ban in law. When the amendments were presented, they gave the impression many rifles used by hunters and farmers were to be banned as well. The amendments were meant to expand the law by clearly describing what is meant by “assault-style” firearms, and adding several hundred more guns to the list of illegal firearms. “The whole point is to prevent these models from getting into the hands of civilians, and they keep inventing new things to make them more deadly.” The exemptions would have been removed under Amendment G-46. “During that time, manufacturers are happy to be producing new models of assault weapons.”

Florida Can Prohibit Gun Purchases by Those Under 21, Court Says (Bloomberg Law)

The Florida law that bans gun sales to people between 18 and 20 years old is constitutional, the Eleventh Circuit said Thursday.

It also noted that laws prohibiting the sale of guns to minors were virtually “unchallenged” for years. The court looked at the Reconstruction Era of history to decide whether the law is constitutional. At the time the 14th Amendment was adopted, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky prohibited 18-to-20-year-olds from buying and possessing guns, the Eleventh Circuit said. Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP and Sukhia Law Group PLC represented the NRA. It then said that the Reconstruction Era regulations burdened law-abiding citizens’ right to be armed for self defense “to an even greater extent” than the Florida law. Although the law prohibits anyone under 21 from buying a gun, they may still possess one.

The International Organization for Standardization (IOS) announced the new merchant category code for gun stores last September, following pressure from gun-control activists. Amalgamated Bank, a New-York based "socially responsible" lender and investor owned by Workers United, an SEIU affiliate, is one of the leading advocates for the new code. MasterCard said MCCs do not offer enough detail on specific purchases to be of much use in resolving larger issues surrounding the gun debate. "It’s for that reason that we have decided to pause work on the implementation of the firearms-specific MCC." Anti-gun activists have championed the adoption of a new code, which they say would flag gun sales and potentially help monitor suspicious activity that could lead to mass shootings. Alec Baldwin is charged with two counts of manslaughter in the death of "Rust" cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

In their February motion, Baldwin's lawyers had conversely argued that the power of prosecution cannot be neatly categorized as either executive or judicial because it falls into both branches. Baldwin, star and producer of "Rust," was holding the gun when it killed Hutchins. "The gun Alec Baldwin used in the shooting that killed Halyna Hutchins has not been destroyed by the state. For example, the potential 18-month prison sentence is a lower penalty than Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed were initially up against. Alec Baldwin Gun That Killed Rust Crew Member Still Evidence, DA ... (Deadline)

UPDATE, 4:35 PM: Alec Baldwin's defense team are wrong that the gun that killed Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has been destroyed, says the Santa Fe ...

Baldwin has a fair opportunity to prepare for this, that the state identify the actual subset of witnesses that they intend to call,” Spiro said of the “roadmap” he wanted. Also on that list is Halyna Hutchins’ husband, who settled a wrongful death suit with Baldwin and Rust producers last year and is to serve as an executive producer on the resurrected production of the indie Western That testing resulted in the internal portions of the gun cracking and more, the bureau said. It is unclear whether the potentially hyperbolic Spiro was referring to damage that the gun suffered during FBI testing in the investigation of the tragedy on the Rust set at the Bonanza Creek Ranch. In that context, the preliminary examination starting in early May, which is a minitrial in all but name, will see prosecutors put forth the gist of their case, as well as call witnesses from an already released list of 46 individuals including law enforcement officials, Rust crew members, and Souza and first assistant director David Halls, the latter of whom struck a plea agreement with the D.A. Before that, the participants will meet March 27 for a hearing on Baldwin’s and Reed’s motions to disqualify special prosecutor Andrea Reed. With still no indication of how live ammo got on the set of the $7 million-budgeted indie Western, those charges initially included an enhancement that came with a mandatory five-year prison stint if Baldwin and/or Reed were found guilty. If the judge agrees during that the prosecution has a strong enough case, the matter will move on to a formal trial later this year. Made public in August last year, the FBI report not only noted the mangling of the gun in question at the time, but also refuted Baldwin’s repeated assertions that he did not pull the trigger on the gun during the rehearsal on the indie Western. “The gun Alec Baldwin used in the shooting that killed Halyna Hutchins has not been destroyed by the state,” asserts New Mexico First Judicial D.A. “So, that’s obviously an issue and we’re going to need to see that firearm, or what’s left of it.” “However, the gun still exists and can be used as evidence.”
