Yet he joined PSG in 2021 with the challenge of helping the French team finally win their first Champions League, and for the second successive season, he and PSG have gone out in the round of 16. Right now, though, only Musiala is looking like the kind of world-class player that Bayern used to have in abundance. The Bayern star dominated the midfield and his first-half shoulder charge on Messi summed up how he approached this game. This isn't a vintage Bayern team, but nobody will want to face them in the latter stages simply because they know how to win in this competition. This might just have been the game in which Messi saw his last chance of one more Champions League crown disappear forever. Bayern had to weather an early PSG storm before taking control of this game, but once Choupo-Moting put them ahead on 60 minutes, the tie was in the bag. In continental competition, all PSG's Qatari owners have to show for their mammoth investment in the club is one final appearance. PSG, who lost to Bayern in Lisbon, Portugal, in their only Champions League final appearance to date in 2020, crashed out 3-0 on aggregate after losing the first-leg 1-0 in Paris.

In the end, we deserved to win.” We defended better in the second half and were dangerous on the ball. PSG controlled 55% of the possession and made more passes, 556 to 453. That could be an advantage for the Black and Yellows in the long run as they will now entirely focus on the Bundesliga. It is an astonishing record when contrasted to the Bundesliga, where Bayern has at times shown deficiencies and where they are deeply entrenched in a title race with Borussia Dortmund. In fact, the only club that did manage to score against Bayern this season has been tiny Viktoria Plzen from the Czech Republic.
Minute-by-minute report: Another year, another limp Champions League exit for Paris Saint-Germain. Scott Murray was watching.
42 min: Ramos ships possession, allowing Davies to slither this way and that, into the PSG box from the left. 64 min: Another corner for PSG out on the right. Verratti attempts to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick, but over-estimates the pace of the ball. 67 min: A snapshot by Mbappe from a tight angle on the left. Sane has the chance of feeding Davies into the box down the right, but misplaces the pass; it’s deflected, and he has to settle for a corner. 72 min: Bayern are probing for the goal that would surely kill this tie for good. 75 min: Sane dribbles this way and that, down the left flank and into the PSG box. 74 min: A bit of space for Mendes, 25 yards out in a pocket on the left. Kimmich brushes Verratti off the ball with absurd ease near the Bayern box, then launches a counter. A yellow would have seen him suspended for the first leg of the quart… “PSG have underperformed for the nth time. 90 min: There will be five added minutes, though PSG just want to go home now.
PSG are once again facing Champions League last-16 elimination without Neymar against Bayern Munich. Can Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe turn things around ...

He comes away from that Bayern set-piece opportunity holding his side and grimacing and that will be that for the away skipper. Kingsley Coman scored the only goal to give Bayern a 1-0 win last time around, as he did famously when the teams met in the 2020 final in Lisbon. The Bayern man gets a talking to from the referee. The Bayern skipper plays a pass to Goretzka and he leaves it on a plate for Choupo-Moting to sweep home. The PSG goalkeeper gets down very well to beat behind and his teammates deal with the Bayern corner. 43rd minute: Messi lifts a delicious-looking ball for Mbappe to run onto but it just skips away from him off the turf and Sommer doesn't try anything smart this time. He drives at the PSG defence and slips in a pass to Choupo-Moting. To get over the line, Bayern brought on Gnabry, Cancelo, Leroy Sane and Sadio Mane. There’s a tempting narrative here of Bayern — a grand old club doing things “the right way” — putting gauche, moneybags PSG in their place.
