Rost's Seahawks Breakdown: What's next after locking up Geno Smith (710 ESPN Seattle)

The Seahawks took care of their QB situation by extending Geno Smith, but as Stacy Rost explains, it may not rule them out from drafting a QB.

Worse still is that a number of holes are opening in the front seven with defensive tackle Poona Ford and linebacker Cody Barton set to become free agents and linebacker Jordyn Brooks still recovering from a torn ACL. A player like Florida’s Anthony Richardson, who boosted his own draft stock with an impressive combine showing, could be available in the latter half of the top 10 if Seattle were to trade back. And with free agency just over a week away, the Seahawks will waste little time addressing it. The reward simultaneously gives Seattle security on offense in 2023 and sparks a debate about whether Smith can lead the team to a Super Bowl. Now comes deals for pending free agents (does Brooks’ injury mean bringing back Barton for 2023?), and potential restructures (seven players will have cap hits of $10 million or more) and cuts. “The position we’re in, we are totally connected to the quarterbacks that are coming out,” Carroll said last week at the NFL Scouting Combine when asked whether the team could draft a quarterback fifth overall. We’re still waiting on details about Smith’s cap hit under his new deal, but we know at least part of this will go toward drafted players later this spring. The Seahawks have secured a Pro Bowl veteran at quarterback. Smith, who signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal last March, earned his first Pro Bowl nod and was named Comeback Player of the Year in 2022. Geno Smith and the Seahawks agreed to terms on a contract extension, reported to be a three-year, $105 million deal by The Score’s Jordan Schultz. The average annual value works out to $35 million, or a few million north of this year’s $32.4 million franchise tag for QBs. They also have the No.

Geno Smith's new contract is a win for both him and the Seahawks (Deadspin)

Of course the franchise got the better end of the deal, but Smith can make a lot of money this year.

If the Seahawks franchised him following the 2023 season a 2024 franchise tag would have been brutal, especially if that season ended without a quarterback they were confident in to replace him. With only one stellar season under his belt of course the Seahawks were going to entice Smith to forgo the franchise tag by offering him a large sum of money upfront. With much of his money front-loaded, if a quarterback the Seahawks select in April is ready to play at some point in 2023, or even if it takes until Week 1 of 2024, they will be able to manage Smith’s contract.

Why re-signing Geno Smith doesn't end Seahawks thinking about ... (Tacoma News Tribune)

Even with the new contract for Geno Smith, the Seahawks, Pete Carroll, John Schneider remain in the running to draft a top quarterback (Anthony Richardson?)

[Carroll said last week in Indianapolis.](https://www.thenewstribune.com/sports/nfl/seattle-seahawks/article272625759.html) “This is a really huge opportunity for us. “There’s a lot invested in Geno, and Geno’s invested lot in us, so then when the time comes when he finally gets a chance to play...we had an inkling that there was something really special there, but we didn’t know. Having 40-50% of the possible total money paid within the first year means if the Seahawks have a college quarterback they love available in the draft at five — or even at, say, nine if they So what is expensive for Seattle with Smith’s new deal this year will be less so in the next three years. These Seahawks were in the playoffs last season. “It’s the position we are in. Even while re-signing Smith, his new contract keeps the Seahawks in what coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider said last week at league’s scouting combine they were all-in on: taking a quarterback at the top of next month’s draft. This is Seattle’s opportunity to draft an elite quarterback to have at rookie, minimum cost for four years, longer than Smith’s new contract. Again, it would only be that high if Smith was one of the league’s best passers the next three seasons. The base value of the deal is three years and $75 million, as [NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo first reported](https://twitter.com/MikeGarafolo/status/1633118752563765250) Tuesday. In a league where for players guaranteed cash is king, Smith gets $40 million guaranteed up front. Carr, the former Raiders captain, one year younger than Smith, got $60 million guaranteed at signing.

Geno Smith Dynasty Profile: Fantasy Outlook, Value, Projections ... (Pro Football Network)

As dynasty fantasy football managers are in full swing, where does the dynasty value of Geno Smith stand, and where does he come in for our rankings?

Currently, Smith is ranked as the QB18 in our updated dynasty rankings and comes in as the No. The collective dynasty community was waiting on what would happen with Smith, as it is difficult to lock him into the correct spot in rankings when you don’t have all the information. Smith is either a hold or a buy for me, as I do expect him to be a starter in 2023. From a dynasty aspect, Smith staying in Seattle was the best outcome. Not only that, but Smith also led the entire league with a 69.8% completion percentage and was sixth in EPA+CPOE. No surprise that Smith was one of the biggest overachievers when comparing ADP to production.

Seahawks, QB Geno Smith reach agreement on 3-year deal (Boston.com)

Quarterback Geno Smith reached a deal with the Seattle Seahawks Monday, signing for three years and $105 million.

Smith led the Seahawks to a 9-8 record and a While a developmental quarterback for the future could be on the agenda, it becomes less of a need for Seattle now that Smith’s immediate future is settled. Last season was the first time Smith had been a full-time starter since 2014 with the New York Jets. But his season was still good enough to answer one of Seattle’s biggest questions for the next couple of years. He threw 30 touchdown passes and just 11 interceptions, completed 399 passes and led the NFL in completion percentage at 69.8%. NFL Network and The Score reported the deal could be worth up to $105 million.

By keeping the length to a minimum, Seattle was able to maintain long-term flexibility in the event that 2022 was an anomaly for Smith. It's a calculated risk in avoiding the franchise tag for what could end up being a one-year wonder. Seattle still has not ruled out drafting a quarterback with the fifth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, which makes the contract length on Smith's deal something to monitor. Smith's deal will put him right on the cusp of the league's 10 highest-paid quarterbacks, alongside fellow NFC quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins ($35 million AAV) and Jared Goff ($33.5 million AAV). Geno Smith is staying put in the Emerald City after a breakout year in 2022. This new contract will pay Smith an average of $35 million per year.

Geno Smith contract details show Seahawks got major discount (Seahawks Wire)

New details for Geno Smith's three-year contract make it clear that the Seahawks got a serious discount for his services.

He has $30 million in incentives. In order for this contract to go bad Smith would either have to suffer a career-ending injury this coming season or permanently regress to the type of quarterback he was early in his career with the Jets. He has a total of $30 million in incentives.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith 'gambling' on himself with new deal (The Seattle Times)

If Geno Smith plays like a top-10 quarterback, as he did in 2022, he will end up being paid like one.

We have a lot of stuff we have to get done. “It’s a good deal and a good deal to the club. “We don’t have a lot, but we have some flexibility. We have a lot of work to do. We have a lot of decisions to make, and this is an extraordinary draft coming up, that has been ongoing, too. And we know that if he’s able to come back and do that, he’s gonna have a great season and we’re gonna be in great shape. I think it sends a really good message, too, to everybody on the outside that this is a good place and things are doing in the right direction.” That likely means it is essentially a two-year deal in which Smith gets a third if he plays well. Heck yeah, we can. And I think that’s maybe why ownership is so happy with it, too.” “But until we knock the big one in the boat … “
