Calgary Flames Post-Game: Flames lose two big leads, beat Dallas ... (Flames Nation)

The Calgary Flames played a pretty good game on Monday night against the Dallas Stars. They were opportunistic offensively and scored when they had to do so.

Heck, the Stars were all over the Flames in the third period – scoring chances were 14-5 Dallas and high-danger chances were 7-1 Dallas. But not only did the Flames kill off that penalty, but Huberdeau sprang Tyler Toffoli on a breakaway shortly after the penalty was killed off. Toffoli chased after the Stars defender with the puck, leading to a turnover to Kadri. Hanifin couldn’t hold onto the puck in the Stars’ zone, and Joe Pavelski sprang Roope Hintz on a breakaway. They had a pressure shift in the Stars zone and Hanifin opted to fling the puck on net with Elias Lindholm screening. The Stars tied things up on a Flames turnover and some nice passing.

Backlund is one of five Flames to score on the penalty kill, with the others being Dillon Dube (2), Blake Coleman (2), Trevor Lewis (1), and Elias Lindholm (1). He's coming off of a two-goal performance on Saturday and has logged six points in his last three skates. As a team, the Flames are tied for the 10th most shorthanded tallies in the NHL (7). We know (Colorado) is better than how they played, and we have to keep building on this for the next 20 games until the playoffs start." While the Flames didn't get the results they were hoping for in last week's contests, Coleman has created plenty of chances and generated energy with his up-tempo style of play. "Goaltending gave us a chance to win but I think (we had) very little run support for him, especially from our top guys." This season, he's suited up for 62 games and has seven assists. "We knew it was coming, it felt like it was coming for a week or two now," Pavelski told NHL.com, referring to his scoring slump. "We've got to find a push, we've got to find some energy," Rasmus Andersson said. "It was a really good effort, and now we have to keep building on it. We're at that point right now where you really need to look at yourself in the mirror and you've got to find your game, that you're good at, and contribute more to the team. That's on us as individuals and that's on us as a team.

The Calgary Flames earn a "massive win" after blowing a lead, then scoring with just 6.2 seconds left in regulation to top the Dallas Stars.

We just have to try to build on this.” … “That’s their calling card, so do it.” This was his straight-to-the-point description of Toffoli’s game-winner: “That was a good play, a great shot by Toff and game over right there.” You look at Naz and Lindy’s line, they’ve really struggled with that the last two games. He had Jakob Pelletier working with Lindholm and Toffoli, while Nick Ritchie logged his Flames debut alongside Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri. “And it’s not so much scoring chances — it’s offensive-zone time and possession game. “And obviously made the right choice.” MacKenzie Weegar deserves some credit too, since he delivered a big crunch along the boards, forcing Stars winger Ty Dellandrea to hastily unload the puck. The feeling when you saw the puck go in, it was really nice.” “It was a massive win,” said Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson in a post-game interview on Sportsnet 960 The Fan. It wasn’t easy, never seems to be for this bunch, but they snapped a five-game losing skid. Article content

Beyond the Boxscore: Calgary Flames overcome multiple collapses ... (Flames Nation)

Not the cleanest victory the Calgary Flames have ever achieved, but it was a victory nonetheless as Calgary bumps the slide on a last second breakaway goal ...

In The Crease – Compliments to Markstrom for his 5v5 play in this one. Huberdeau (66.71% // 75.64%) and Kadri (70.49% // 75.64%) have a new linemate that compliments the offence but makes them need to play proper defence to cover up for his impact. Getting a goal in your debut is certainly going to look good for where he’ll play going forward. Youth is a good thing – the Flames really need to learn that embracing it can help. Before the 2021 World Junior Championship many had their projected roster with Pelletier off of it – then when he made the team it was as the extra forward. Markstrom’s overall play has improved drastically since the Boston game – the dad boost is here hopefully to stay. Duehr has won over not just the fans but the coach and GM – his emergence was cited by the GM as one of the reasons they could afford to move Brett Ritchie in their deadline deal. xGF% – Jakob Pelletier (76.78%) has turned every line he plays on and every player he plays with into an impact player. Every other time that has seemingly happened to the Flames this year they found a way to let it collapse – until last night. I try to be nice to the guy but it really seems like he’s not amongst the 12 most effective Flames players on their roster. Corsi King – Tyler Toffoli (81.10%) got redemption after the refs didn’t call a penalty shot for him earlier. Not the cleanest victory the Calgary Flames have ever achieved, but it was a victory nonetheless as Calgary bumps the slide on a last second breakaway goal from Tyler Toffoli.

The Flames have all the ingredients to make the playoffs. They are currently 23rd in the NHL in power play percentage at 19.3%. If they don’t step up, the Flames can kiss their playoff hopes goodbye. He needs to turn his game around if the Flames want to stay in the playoff race. The power play is another area that has to improve. He is going to be playing in the majority of games down the stretch drive. Almost all defensive metrics prove that the Flames are one of the top teams in the NHL at suppressing scoring chances and shots. Those numbers have translated into goals as the Flames currently rank ninth the NHL in goals scored at 5-on-5. That means the Flames only score 39% of the goals at 5-on-5 when he is on the ice. The Flames have been outscored 35-23 at 5-on-5 with Milan Lucic on the ice. The Flames have one of, if not the easiest schedule to finish out the regular season. Let’s take a look at the future and some reasons for optimism heading down the stretch drive as the Flames make a push to the playoffs.

Assessing if it makes sense for the Calgary Flames to call up Dustin ... (The Win Column)

Looking at Calgary Flames goaltending prospect Dustin Wolf and his 2022–23 performance with the AHL Wranglers to justify an NHL call-up.

Wolf is on the way to his second consecutive AHL Goalie of the Year title, and with that it may be the perfect time for the undersized goalie to have his first stint in the NHL. If Brad decides it’s time to rebuild then Wolf could spend a full season with the team next year but in all likely hood the 21-year-old will stick to the AHL for one more season. Some people might see this as a reason not to call up Wolf because it might be too much for the young goalie right before his team starts a hopeful playoff run to the Calder Cup. With goaltending being a glaring issue this season and Darryl Sutter’s decision to stick with Jacob Markstrom down the stretch, don’t put it past Treliving to make a call to bring up Dustin Wolf for his NHL debut ahead of the Wranglers’ Calder Cup playoff run. However, in the prospects pipeline, there is aglimmering light at the end of the proverbial tunnel: Dustin Wolf and Matthew Coronato. Inconsistency has been the word of the year for the Calgary Flames this season.

The Flames are 2-4-2 this season in the first half of back-to-backs, but 3-2-2 in the second half of them. Things haven’t gone their way for much of the past month, but they battled against Dallas and seemed to find a level of tactical desperation we haven’t seen from them in awhile. The Flames were shut out by the Wild on Saturday night and are undoubtedly looking for a measure of revenge in the rematch.

Flames' 1-Goal Losses Have Sunk Season (The Hockey Writers)

The Flames are on the verge of being too far out of the playoff race to catch up due to their play and decision-making in one-goal games.

A combination of missing offence, a lack of depth and below-average goaltending has sunk the Flames this season and put them in a spot that will be very tough to climb out of. But he is to blame for the lack of moves before the deadline that might have helped give his team more of a chance to remain in the playoff race. [I don’t blame Treliving](https://thehockeywriters.com/flames-need-make-deadline-trade-match-division/) for the lack of key acquisitions because the team was in a spot that made it risky to load up. They have piled up 24 one-goal losses between the seventh and 62nd games of the season and lead the league in that category. The only above-average and solid part of their game this season is the Flames’ penalty kill, which ranks 13th in the league. The Flames’ 2023 Trade Deadline was a letdown, but that wasn’t a huge surprise since they were already at the edge of the playoff race by then.

In their 65th game of the season, a goaltending battle ensued Markstrom and noted Flames killer The Wild thought they scored a goal with 1:40 remaining to give Gustavsson the shutout win, but the goal was called back for being offside. While recording shutouts is a nice bonus when winning, the Flames have also ceded far more goals they did last year. With the team being involved in so many games decided by just one goal, this trend has cost them standing points and has them deep in a hole as they claw their way into the wild card picture. Markstrom was the runner-up for the Vezina Trophy just one year ago, and a big part of this was due to his league-leading shutouts. The 2022–23 season has been tumultuous for the Calgary Flames.

He - along with Nazem Kadri - seemed to mesh with new linemate Nick Ritchie, Huberdeau setting up his first goal as a Flame to open the scoring. If you play the Wild, Kaprizov is the always the player to watch. But Huberdeau was on a mission in the win over the Stars, collecting a pair of helpers - including setting up Toffoli's winner with a heads-up pass - and recording a pair of shots. 10 was rolling all night, showing off his deft passing skills and could have collected a half-dozen helpers with the incredible passes he was dishing all game. Zadorov's 12 goals as a member of the Flames are the sixth-most by a Russian skater in Flames history, just two goals behind Andrei Nazarov for fifth spot on the list. Troy Stecher fed Zadorov last night in Dallas for his first point as a member of the Flames. Elias Lindholm scored his 199th career goal last night in Dallas, putting him one away from 200 in his NHL career.
