What is the future of Blake Wheeler on the Winnipeg Jets? (Jets White Out)

The NHL Trade Deadline is over. Time to think of the future. What of Blake Wheeler? Is he still an effective player on the Winnipeg Jets?

Blake Wheeler was the de facto leader at the time and needed to transition to a supporting role. Realistically, the Jets have one last shot to make a Stanley Cup run. For the context above, red is good and blue is bad. [His defenders (namely his coaches)](https://jetswhiteout.com/2023/03/04/good-job-winnipeg-jets-gm-kevin-cheveldayoff/) will point to the fact that he is still nearly a point-a-game player. He has played in 2 All-Star games and finished 8th in the Hart race in 2017-18. Blake Wheeler’s goal song is “Hypnotize” by the Notorious BIG.

San Jose Sharks put the chomp on Jets in OT (Winnipeg Sun)

The Winnipeg Jets had more than enough chances to beat the lowly San Jose Sharks on Monday night.

“It’s that time (of the season) where you need to start finding it. It’s not very important right now. “It definitely felt great,” Niederreiter said. It definitely could have gone a lot differently tonight. In the second period, we had 11 shots, we’d like to again put more pucks at the net but again, we had a lot of Grade A’s and (James Reimer) made a lot of big saves and the chances we had to put them in the open net, we missed. Reimer Saves Sharks in Knyzhov's Return 3-2 (San Jose Hockey Now)

The San Jose Sharks visit the Winnipeg Jets at Canada Life Centre. Nikolai Knyzhov made his NHL return, and Steven Lorentz gave the Sharks a 1-0 first ...

5 left: Beautiful puck-moving sequence from Karlsson to Hertl to Eklund to Zetterlund. Anyway, it’s for the best for the drive to Bedard. 6 in: Vlasic up high, but two Jets converge, he can’t even get it deep without risking turnover, he goes safe with a straight pass off the boards, still a turnover. 3 in: 3-on-2, Zetterlund has to make a play. Still the only Sharks goalie to have a positive GSAx season since Aaron Dell in 2019-20, or as a starter, Martin Jones in 2017-18. I know that goes against every fiber of his style, but San Jose Sharks were desperate for anything besides a flat-out turnover. Know he’s dead tired, near 2-minute shift, but he has a couple moments with the puck, float it out if you must. Not sure what Karlsson was doing, guess he expected Reimer to get the puck on the clear. Lorentz goal: Soft Labanc pass to middle for Lindblom to skate into. I do wish Eklund had just taken the puck to the net there, I think he had a little space and time, instead of curling back to the perimeter. I think he disrupted a Jet on the forecheck too. Following scratch, Jets' Schmidt puts 'a good foot forward' in OT loss ... (Sportsnet.ca)

For Winnipeg Jets defenceman Nate Schmidt, being a healthy scratch against the Edmonton Oilers, though expected, was tough to digest.

He sucks other guys into him which makes it a lot easier for us to find some of the areas that he’s now created with his space and with his body movement. Whether it’s in the corner or down low he really does create a lot of space for the other guys that he’s playing with and for the D. “It’s definitely a great mark and I’m definitely proud of it but hopefully there’s more to come.” “He creates a lot of chaos, and as a defenceman it’s tough to play against when he’s got his big wide frame boxing you out. He’s effective on the forecheck, a big body, you can’t move him when he’s in front of the net. (Ehlers) makes a great play for me to have a chance there.

Game Recap: Winnipeg Jets vs. San Jose Sharks (Arctic Ice Hockey)

Winnipeg trips over itself and loses a game it was about to win.

It was a lead that felt like it might be the game-winner, a critical 2 points in the bag. It was not, in fact, the winner. San Jose doesn’t have the firepower to skate with a quality roster, and the Jets have more than enough to cause them grief. The third period was once again a textbook repeat of the previous 40 minutes. Winnipeg started the proceedings off quickly, outshooting the Sharks by a wide margin in the opening period. [Winnipeg Jets](https://www.arcticicehockey.com) are in a tailspin towards missing the playoffs.
