We just need to clean things up and come back stronger next week at Phoenix.” [Austin Dillon](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48393/austin-dillon) — Finished 27th: “We started the race deeper in the field than any of us would have preferred, and long green-flag runs early in the race made it difficult to work on handling issues. I was just trying to nurse it home and keep it out of trouble.” [Noah Gragson](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48606/noah-gragson) — Finished 30th: “An up-and-down day. It seemed like we were the best of the rest and then we lost the handling.” [Austin Cindric](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48665/austin-cindric) — Finished 6th: “A bit of a team effort there honestly. This was a good run for us, especially with the start of season we’ve had.” [Daniel Suarez](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48501/daniel-suarez) — Finished 10th: “It was a roller coaster. [Justin Haley](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48577/justin-haley) — Finished 8th: “We had a really good long run car today and this is our Fontana car. We’ll take this 14th-place finish, regroup and focus on Phoenix Raceway.” [Erik Jones](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48240/erik-jones) — Finished 19th: “Not the finish we deserved today. [Bubba Wallace](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48427/bubba-wallace) — Finished 4th: “Really thought we had a much better car in the race than what we had in practice. I almost came over the radio and was like, ‘Hey, good job, we finished sixth.’ Then the caution came out and I perked up again and got some.” [Christopher Bell](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48626/christopher-bell) — Finished 5th: “Honestly, the finish to that ended up about as good as we could have asked. Yeah, just a bummer that we didn’t end up the winner, but all in all, William probably had a little bit better car than I had today, and their pit crew executed when they needed to there at the end.” [Alex Bowman](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48443/alex-bowman) — Finished 3rd: “I think I got us too tight in stage 3 and just tried to be really aggressive and make for it there on that last restart. Yeah, you’ve just got to get over that and then try to execute a good pit stop, and I thought I did a really good job getting to my sign, and getting to the commitment line, I had a gap to William behind me, and their pit crew must have just did a really good job and got out in front of us, and that gave up the front row to us. [William Byron](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48576/william-byron) — Winner: “I felt like in practice we had a good car. I texted (team owner Rick Hendrick) after practice and felt really good about the car and just wanted to reassure that we’re going to go out there and try to win for him because it was a tough week.” [Kyle Larson](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/auto-racing/nascar/player/48450/kyle-larson) — Finished 2nd: “It’s just part of Cup racing.

NASCAR: Surprising championship favorite after Chase Elliott injury (Beyond the Flag)

Chase Elliott is still a co-favorite to win the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series championship, despite being out for an indefinite amount of time.

Busch missed the first 11 races of the 2015 season with a broken right leg and broken left foot. That driver still needs to qualify, and drivers don’t score any points during absences. There is a sense of optimism, however, as team have already applied for a playoff waiver. The team announced that he will be out for “several weeks” and did not indicate any sort of a timetable on a potential return. If, for example, he returns only for the regular season finale in late August, it’s highly unlikely he’ll get one. A decision isn’t expected until a return timetable is established.

9 car to still be in playoff contention by the summer. It was an accident and our guys have to go out and live their lives.” Chase Elliott underwent successful surgery for an injury to his left leg on Friday night after a snowboarding accident in Colorado. The sanctioning body has granted waivers for medical reasons before, most recently during the 2022 season, when Kurt Busch and Alex Bowman sustained concussions at different points of last year. The 2004 Cup champion delivered that announcement in the Las Vegas media center through tears, adding that he still “wasn’t 100%” recovered from a concussion he sustained earlier that summer and that it was best for 23XI Racing to move on without him. It was an accident and Chase feels awful about it but our stance on it is just that. For Kyle, this will mark his first visit to his home racetrack not in a Joe Gibbs Racing car. A total of 17 different Cup drivers have won at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. At a press conference Saturday, Hendrick Motorsports officials provided updates on Elliott’s health. Kyle Larson is right with him at 6-1 odds — followed by Ross Chastain (who’s won three stages in two races) and Joey Logano at 8-1 odds. 9 car in Elliott’s stead. It might be emotional for both brothers collectively, too.
