Penn and Randy Couture as the eighth multi-weight UFC champion. -- Derek Brunson (+170) vs. -- Jon Jones (-195) vs. This time around he opened as a slight favourite over Jones but that line quickly swung in Jones's direction. Jones was roughly -300 chalk in his rematch with Alexander Gustafsson, approximately -700 facing Anthony Smith, -500 versus Thiago Santos, and longer than -400 against Reyes in a fight he won on the judges’ scorecards, but not the public’s. The only issue with that if you’re leaning towards or cheering for Gane? Jones landed an average of 4.30 significant strikes per minute at 57 per cent efficiency in the 205-pound division; he absorbed 2.22 significant strikes per minutes with 64 per cent defence. The 32-year-old from France knocked out former heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos, won five-round main event unanimous decisions over Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Alexander Volkov, and earned an interim title by stopping Derrick Lewis in 2021. Alexander Volkanovski’s and Valentina Shevchenko were the only champions that didn't lose whilst Jones was away. Cormier later went on to become heavyweight champ, but how Jones does in his new weight class will be a mystery until he and Gane clash. He became champion in his seventh UFC bout and over the years accumulated multiple divisional and organizational records on his journey to becoming the No. 1-ranked heavyweight in the sport and undisputed defending UFC champion at the time of his release.

Ahead of Saturday's UFC 285 in Las Vegas, theScore's Nick Baldwin makes his picks for the top bouts. Heavyweight championship. Jon Jones (26-1, 1 NC)

He uses unorthodox trips and throws to get his opponents to the ground. To pull off the upset, Neal needs to keep the fight on the feet. The Mexican challenger is a great boxer, using her speed and volume to best her opponents in that department. Rakhmonov is well-rounded, boasting multiple tools on the feet and insane grappling chops. She'll take advantage of her big edge in the grappling department. Shevchenko is coming off the closest fight of her title reign so far, a split-decision win over Taila Santos last June. However, Jones has talked about his grappling a lot ahead of the fight with Gane. Gane is clearly in his prime, whereas Jones doesn't seem to be. One of the biggest talents in MMA history. Bringing a Muay Thai background into the fight, he's arguably the sharpest and quickest striker in the heavyweight division. And Gane is a legitimate heavyweight, trim when he weighs in around 245 pounds. There are a ton of question marks surrounding the return of one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time.

Jon “Bones” Jones added another page to his historic mixed martial arts career on Saturday night.

Nickal improved to 4-0 with the win and the competition figures to get stiffer in his next bout. You’ll rarely see a fighter make his UFC debut on a pay-per-view main card, let alone one as big as the event that welcomes a star like Jones back to the Octagon. Grasso quickly took the champion’s back, locked in a rear-naked choke (that was actually more of a face crank) to force the submission. UFC 285 results, takeaways: Jon Jones secures his place in history ... (CBSSports.com)

Jones cemented himself as the best MMA fighter of all time while Grasso authored the latest wild upset in a title fight.

Still, it's hard to see the fight being overturned and a rematch with Pickett is a waste of everyone involved's time. Given how pivotal the takedown was to Nickal's gameplan, it's understandable that Pickett's manager is To be fair, before the first minute was up, Nickal was already fishing for a submission finish. A fight with Covington is a test with a far higher difficulty but it'd be better to see Rakhmonov advancing up the ranks quickly than getting stuck fighting middle-of-the-road contenders for the next few years. But Grasso took advantage of a split-second opportunity, latching onto Shevchenko's back after the champion missed a spinning kick and immediately taking the fight to the floor and locking in the choke, snapping a nine-fight winning streak for Shevchenko that included seven successful title defenses. Shevchenko will certainly be given an immediate rematch, which will force Grasso to prove the win was not a fluke. The UFC 285 main card opened with several fights featuring heavily-hyped prospects getting a chance to shine on the big stage. But mixed martial arts is a volatile sport with so many paths to victory that it is almost a guarantee that defeat will eventually find even the greatest fighters. While there was plenty of talk about how dangerous an opponent Gane was, the reality is that a properly motivated Jones will always be a nightmare for someone with Gane's grappling deficiencies. Jones' greatness was on full display, taking just over two minutes to force Gane to tap out and winning a title in the second weight class in his career. Jones winning changed the heavyweight division in a massive way and could spark big returns for the UFC's overall business, but Grasso snatching the title from Shevchenko was far more shocking. That said, Jones secured his place as MMA's "GOAT" on Saturday night by not only finally moving to heavyweight, but making incredibly easy work of Gane, a proven and capable top-tier heavyweight.

Jon Jones is your new UFC heavyweight champion and the path is clear for a dream fight with Stipe Miocic. While it is true that Miocic has been absent since losing to Ngannou in 2021, Sergei Pavlovich -- the only contender more deserving of a shot -- woefully lacks name value and has a fight booked. Stipe Miococ: A dream fight between the most successful UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champions in history appears to be in the works. The main card also featured a thrilling UFC debut by highly-accomplished collegiate wrestler Bo Nickal and a major showcase for Shavkat Rakhmonov, a likely future title challenger. Jones and Miocic are arguably the greatest light heavyweight and heavyweight fighters in mixed martial arts history, respectively.
