ANALYSIS: NHL Trade deadline is a tough time to be a player or GM (Globalnews.ca)

As much fun as fans are having with the frenzy of trades in the NHL, this must be the toughest time to be a player or a general manager.

Not all the GMs and their teams that have been dealing will get in, and only one team will win the Stanley Cup. And the reality of what we’ve witnessed, since that first trade in late January, is that only 16 teams will indeed make the playoffs. Dealing with the human aspect of a trade is one thing.

Bonino played for the Penguins in 2015-16 and 2016-17, the years the Penguins won the Stanley Cup. Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas is in the final year of his contract and faces another first-round meeting with the Lightning. So they recently added the contracts of injured Shea Weber and Jakub Voracek. The deal wasn't completed in time before Thursday's game, so Domi sat out the matchup against the Stars. Vrana has two 20-plus goal seasons in his career and has a $5.25 million cap hit for one more season. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and The Athletic reported the news, though it's unclear what the return is. Kulikov, who has averaged 20 minutes a game, is one of two defensemen that the Ducks are looking to move. [According to Cap Friendly](https://twitter.com/CapFriendly/status/1631401327665266690), more than 40 deals have taken place in the two weeks before deadline day. NHL.com senior writer Dan Rosen will provide all the news, rumors and analysis up to and past the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline.

The speedy forward has 14 goals and 22 points in 60 games this season. They are reportedly in the market for a defenseman. Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan has familiarity with Bonino and what he can do, even though he hasn't played for the Penguins in nearly six seasons. Regardless, the Jets are getting a versatile forward who had 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 57 games for the Lightning this season. He never played a game for the Sharks, who are getting a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft in return for Namestnikov. It was 81.5 percent in the first 44 games of the season. ET when the Ducks aren't going to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and he's a pending unrestricted free agent? This is a smart bit of business for the Wild. The versatile forward has 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) in 52 games this season. It apparently was not, because he found a depth forward in the bargain bin. Brothers were traded for each other, with forward Brett Ritchie going from the Calgary Flames to the Arizona Coyotes in a trade that sent forward Nick Ritchie to Calgary. He's signed for two more seasons ($1 million cap charge) and could be an extra forward for the Devils or a bottom-six regular.

NHL Trade Deadline 2023 Winners and Losers: Bruins, Rangers ... (Sporting News)

The NHL trade deadline is always hectic. Teams are moving pieces all over, whether that be contenders acquiring players to make a run in the postseason, or ...

Speaking of the Meier trade, the Sharks did not get the return many expected. One of the deepest teams in the league got even deeper at a minimal cost. The club also brought in forward Nick Bjugstad as a strong depth option. The Oilers also made a couple of strong deals. It was a great job by Poile to recognize where the team was at and sell rather than stand pat. Out the door went Pierre Engvall and [Rasmus Sandin](https://www.sportingnews.com/ca/nhl/news/rasmus-sandin-trade-details-maple-leafs-capitals/kswspum0pzt18ad6hqkvavff), who Dubas fetched a first-round pick for. GM Pierre Dorion was set on not giving up prospects like Ridly Greig and Tyler Kleven in a deal for the Coyotes defenseman, and the tactic worked. Pittsburgh traded a second-round pick for Predators forward Mikael Granlund, who is an expensive, underwhelming option for the bottom six. Yet, after all the rumblings and reported interest from multiple suitors, the offer the Coyotes accepted was a conditional first-round pick and two seconds from the Senators. While it cost a first-rounder for Tarasenko, the Rangers didn't have to give up much at all for Kane thanks to his no-trade clause. The Bruins didn't have to give up any rostered players besides depth forward Craig Smith and dealt first-round picks instead of prospects, which they don't have a ton of. There were a number of highly-active teams, especially in the Eastern Conference.

It'll be a slog to the finish line, and the organization is decidedly facing an uphill battle this offseason and over the next few years. After this season he will be a free agent and the Flyers could lose him for nothing. NHL trade deadline: Breaking down Friday's deals (thescore.com)

Quick-hit analysis of big-league trades completed Friday, March 3. Wild scoop up Klingberg. Minnesota acquires: D John Klingberg

After returning to the Wings in December, Vrana played three NHL games (no points) and 17 AHL games (11 points). Between then and Thursday, 46 trades were registered with the league, according to the indispensable Louis is banking on the classic change-of-scenery bump while Detroit is offloading half of Vrana's $5.25-million cap hit this year and next. There's nothing wrong with this move in isolation; the player is useful and the price is fine. Namestnikov's reliable defensively and can chip in a bit of offense (15 points in 57 games in limited ice for Tampa Bay). I like this trade from the Canucks' perspective, too, as a fourth-rounder is a better pick than expected. He can fill a bottom-six role and block shots on the penalty kill for the Pens, who currently occupy a playoff spot. I love this trade for the Sabres for a few reasons. To start, it rewards the youngest team in the league for taking a significant step forward in the standings this season. I get the rationale from the Wild's point of view, with Greenway hitting a wall offensively this season (seven points in 45 games) and the club needing to shed salary. Along with adding depth to the blue line, the Pens are clearing cap space with this deal. Anaheim general manager Pat Verbeek was clearly hoping for a juicier package when he so obviously signed the one-dimensional blue-liner to a one-year deal for the sole purpose of flipping him at the deadline.

NHL trade deadline 2023 winners, losers: East loads up with ... (USA TODAY)

While the leadup to Friday's NHL trade deadline was exciting, the day itself was not as eventful. Here are the highlights from trade season.

All the major moves happened in the East. [fastest team to 100 points](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/bruins/2023/03/02/bruins-set-nhl-record-100-points-61-games/11387479002/) in NHL history, and even so, they didn't sit still. The Penguins kept the Big Three of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang together in the offseason, but production from their bottom-six forwards has been an issue all season. Even as the Red Wings look at their seventh season in a row without a playoff berth, Yzerman is in no rush for quick, short-lived fixes. They also have the contracts of Oliver Ekman-Larrson, Bryan Little, Andrew Ladd and Josh Brown on their books; none of them play for the Coyotes. The Red Wings have five picks in the first two rounds of the 2023 draft, but losing key roster pieces will hurt their push for a wild-card spot. They avoided playoff distractions by [signing David Pastrnak](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/2023/01/30/nhl-trade-deadline-2023-tracker-analysis-deals-rumors/11136672002/) to an eight-year, $90 million contract. General manager Kyle Dubas is under pressure to win a Stanley Cup – or even a playoff round – in the final year of his contract. They're a deeper team, but of course, they'll have to face the three-time defending Stanley Cup finalist Lightning in the first round. But they do seem to be among the teams most receptive to adding draft picks and holding contracts for players not on their roster, so there's that! The Rangers needed a top-six right winger, a defenseman and a depth forward. Then Kane essentially forced his way to New York and the Rangers finalized that deal Tuesday.

NHL TRADE DEADLINE: Picking the winners and the losers (Edmonton Sun)

As Brian Burke so often has said there is only one parade at season's end in the National Hockey League with the Stanley Cup on display.

And they had to retain half of Klingberg’s cap hit to move him. They were heavily in on Timo Meier, but didn’t get him so decided to step aside. Quick wasn’t the answer because he’s running out of gas as a starter, but they didn’t address it, elsewhere. They’re seven points back of Seattle and five behind Minnesota in the wild-card race. He will be a third-liner with the Lightning. Arizona GM Bill Armstrong was operating at the behest of his ownership to not take on anybody of usefulness now, certainly anybody making money, because the team is losing tons of it. Ekholm has three years left at $6 million with the Preds paying $250,000 of that each year, but Ekholm can play against other team’s best players and well. But he was off-loaded to Vegas, where they have a cast of tenders, but not one with two Cup rings, even if Quickie’s game has dropped precipitously this season. Then, after much sober thought, they decided it was the end for past playoff titan Jonathan Quick and went for Columbus UFA goalie Joonas Korpisalo, in tandem with Gavrikov. Tarasenko is a first-rounder in 2023, but likely in the 25 range, so no big deal. It was another quietly astute move from GM Chris Drury, rounding out their three pairs to go with lead horses Adam Fox and Jake Trouba. Having Kane and Tarasenko now to accompany Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider on the wings to flank Mika Zibanejad and Vincent Trocheck is gluttony.

Most improved team after 2023 NHL Trade Deadline debated (NHL.com)

The NHL landscape has been radically altered in the past five weeks thanks to a flurry of trades, many involving big names like forwards Patrick Kane, ...

We all know the Maple Leafs have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs six seasons in a row and haven't won a postseason series since 2004, and we won't know until the playoffs start if what they did will be enough for them to advance in a likely first-round matchup against the Lightning. The Predators also traded forward Nino Niederreiter to the Winnipeg Jets for a second-round pick in the 2024 draft and forward Mikael Granlund to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a second-round pick in the 2023 draft. Sure, the Rangers and Devils made the big splashes in the Eastern Conference with the acquisitions of Kane and Meier, but the Maple Leafs added the grit, as well as postseason experience and success, they have been lacking. The worst kept secret in the weeks leading up to the deadline was the possibility of the Devils working on a deal to get the skilled power forward they coveted in Meier from the San Jose Sharks. This checks all the boxes for me, for now and for later. 14 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft), a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and third- fourth-, and fifth-round picks in the 2023 NHL Draft. That's what the Rangers have in the newly acquired dynamic duo of Tarasenko (from the St. This is a huge addition for the already impressive core of the Senators, who would benefit greatly from getting playoff experience this season without needing to make a deal for a rental. The cry regarding the Oilers for a few seasons was to get stronger on defense, and they did that by acquiring Mattias Ekholm from the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. Oh, and they have the goalie, Linus Ullmark, who is the favorite to win the Vezina Trophy as the best in the NHL. The Bruins, the best team in the NHL all season and the fastest in League history to reach 100 points (101 in 61 games), got significantly better before the deadline with the acquisitions of defenseman Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway from the Washington Capitals on Feb. They ranked second defensively (2.58 goals against per game), and they were ninth offensively (3.34 goals per game) even though they didn't have an individual in the top 50 in scoring.

NHL Trade Deadline Minor Moves: Hunt, Asplund, Brown & More (The Hockey Writers)

The 2023 NHL Trade Deadline has officially passed, and several teams around the league made some minor moves before it.

The 6-foot-3 forward is in his first season in North America and has seven goals and 15 points in 40 AHL games. Blidh has played in 14 NHL games this season, where he has zero points and a minus-2 rating. Although Brown is not a star, he does have the potential to be a solid fourth-line forward for the Senators during the final stretch of the season. Brown was dealt to the Ottawa Senators during the final minutes of the deadline in exchange for a 2023 sixth-round pick. Asplund showed last season that he can produce at the NHL level, as he posted a 27-point campaign in 80 games for Buffalo. In 27 games on the year, he has two goals and six assists.

Vancouver Canucks: A franchise that will miss the playoffs for the third straight year and seventh time in eight years should not be giving up talent like Horvat or a first-round pick, especially for a player such as Hronek. Buffalo Sabres: Seeking to end an NHL-record 11-season playoff drought, the team was in on talks to trade for Chychrun. Yzerman did acquire a pair of first-round picks in exchange for Bertuzzi and Filip Hronek, but it will take years for those selections to possibly pan out. Philadelphia Flyers: The team knows it might lose James van Riemsdyk for nothing in free agency this summer, and still could not move him for desperately needed help. New York Rangers: The franchise's quest to hoist the Cup for the first time since 1994 got a boost with the additions of three-time champion Patrick Kane and four-time All-Star Vladimir Tarasenko. Defenseman Jakob Chychrun had 28 points in 36 games this season for the Arizona Coyotes and may produce even more with better players and and a motivated team.

Fletcher Fails Flyers with NHL Trade Deadline Blunder (The Hockey Writers)

Chuck Fletcher showed a lack of creativity with the Philadelphia Flyers by holding onto James van Riemsdyk past the NHL Trade Deadline.

The salay cap restrictions have limited the flexibility of NHL GMs to make moves the past three years, and it’s not farfetched to think that Hayes or Provorov could move during the offseason for substantial trade packages. Fans of the Philadelphia Flyers have hung tough through nearly a half-century without a Stanley Cup, nearly a decade of mediocrity after 2012, and three seasons of embarrassing futility from 2020-21 through 2022-23. However, the track record of Chuck Fletcher and the Flyers offers no reason to think that effective trades will come during the offseason. However, the Flyers couldn’t come up with a way to move van Riemsdyk, who has more goals and more assists in fewer games, for any compensation whatsoever. He consistently points to the lack of talent on the roster needed to compete for a playoff spot, and he’s been more open about the extent of long-term problems that need to be solved. After one reasonably successful season in 2019-20, Fletcher now faces one of the worst cap situations in the league, a limited supply of draft capital because of shortsighted trades for veteran players, an underwhelming prospect pool, and an expensive roster that never realistically had a chance to compete in 2022-23. The Tampa Bay Lightning gave up five draft picks and one player to the Nashville Predators for Tanner Jeannot, who has five goals and nine assists in 56 games in 2022-23. Fletcher’s failure to move such a sensible trade chip for any return package whatsoever indicates the incompetency of a GM unfit to negotiate NHL trades. Moving veterans on expiring contracts ahead of the trade deadline for future draft picks or prospects is one of the simplest concepts involved in helping a team get younger. [late-round draft picks and Brendan Lemieux](https://thehockeywriters.com/flyers-lemieux-kings-macewen-3-3-23/) during one of the most active trade seasons in NHL history. The Flyers continue to avoid making changes because they don’t recognize the full severity of how bad their situation has gotten, and their misguided perception continues to dig their hole deeper. We’d probably rather have a good pick and allow JvR (van Riemsdyk) the opportunity to play in the playoffs, but the market spoke.”

2023 NHL Trade Deadline Was a Wildly Lopsided Arms Race (The Hockey Writers)

The East dominated the 2023 Trade Deadline, further extending the gap between the top six teams and the rest of the conference and the league.

It will be a big surprise if one of the top six teams in the East not only make it to the Stanley Cup Final, but win over whoever comes out of the underwhelming West. The Bruins didn’t have a ton of cap space to start off with, but as the fastest team to reach 100 points in a season in NHL history and next year an uncertainty, they had to go all-in and This next section is going to consist of the comparison between the impactful players that headed from West to East and the impactful players that went East to West. We will now take a look at the individual teams, especially the top six in the East, and see what they have packaged away to make the biggest splash and keep up with the other teams. The difference in talent level is huge between the two groups seeing as some of the biggest players coming over from the East to the West were depth moves and acquisitions by teams not in playoff contention. That’s two of the team’s top prospects and draft picks that could very well turn out to be the same. For a while now there have been seven teams battling for two playoff spots, and more than not, these teams have chosen to add instead of sell, bringing in more talent from the West over to the East. There are arguably two teams in the playoff race in the West that sit outside of the playoff picture, the Flames and Predators. The Devis gave up a boatload, but had to in order to get their prized player along with 50 percent retained this season. Not only has early movement been a theme at this trade deadline, the blockbusters and multiple impactful moves have also been very evident in the East. The top six teams in the East — the Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning, and New York Rangers — all put in work before the deadline. The East may be the beast right now, but the West looks primed to dominate in the future after the farms have almost all flipped conferences as well.

NHL Trade Deadline: Grading the Avalanche Trades (Colorado Hockey Now)

The NHL Trade deadline has come and gone and it's time to grade the moves the Colorado Avalanche made prior to March 3.

The other two moves were of more significance for the team, but at the time, I felt both depended on an additional move being made to supplement them. The two best moves they made were for two fourth liners on the team. Horvat wasn’t a realistic option, and while they were after O’Reilly, they didn’t have all the picks Toronto was able to offer. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if the Avalanche don’t make this pick come June. Much like the Johnson move, this trade would look better if the Avalanche had picked up a scoring forward before the NHL Trade deadline. Another top nine forward to reshape the group would have helped out immensely and made this trade look better. I said at the time that giving up a second round pick for Eller was steep, and on Friday, The Avalanche have a clear plan of Eller centering the third line. The team was short depth on defense before this trade, and swapping out defenders doesn’t change that. I think Englund is a better defenseman, but ultimately, the gap isn’t that huge. I have low expectations, and if Greg Cronin is able to work some magic on Merkley, this turns into even more of a win than it already is. MacDonald and Kaut have each scored for the
