The new album features 36 tracks that cover an array of themes from late-night anthems to small-town stories, heartbreak ballads, and more. Several of these ...

His sorrowful emotions come to life as he dissects the pain of seeing that person move on with someone else in “Devil Don’t Know,” while his gritty vocals compare a relationship timeline to the life of “Keith Whitley,” who’s story was cut far too short. And then once my son came into the world, I felt like I had a whole new reason to live and to stick around. The final installment of Mullins’ songwriting skills, “F150-50,” explores a heads or tails method as he ponders whether or not to try and rekindle an old flame. When it came to cutting outside songs, Wallen worked with a number of notable songwriters including his cousin, Jared Mullins. As he delivers the tender lyrics of his Before listeners even have the chance to dive into the large track list, they are greeted with the album art, which holds a tremendous amount of family significance.

Ranking Every Song on Morgan Wallen's 'One Thing at a Time' Album (Taste of Country)

This isn't a review of Morgan Wallen's One Thing At a Time album as much as it is a dissection. Here are all 36 songs ranked with explanations and clips.

"Last Drive Down Main" — "Last Drive Down Main" opens with a hook that's among the least memorable on this album. "Wine Into Water" — One song had to be last, and "Wine Into Water" is it for us. "Had It" — When One Thing at a Time was announced, we wrote that because Cuban-American rapper Alex Eskeerdo Izquiedo was a co-writer, this song would "lean hard into (Wallen's) hip-hop influences." "Hope That's True" — Sonically, "Hope That's True" stands out as a quasi-beachy heartbreak song on One Thing at a Time. "Dying Man" — This closing song wraps the album with a story of redemption in the arms of a good woman. while "Me to Me" (five songs later on the album) is an uptempo bop that asks a girl to bet on him. Eric Church)" — Wallen and his hero Eric Church team up for "Man Made a Bar," a song that takes the story of God's creation one day further. "I Deserve a Drink" — "I Deserve a Drink" is a real conundrum that strives to capture the feeling of a man longing for a drink he knows he shouldn't have. "One Thing at a Time" — At its best, One Thing at a Time delivers funky guitar lines over Wallen's heartbreak. "'98 Braves" — If you had to cull One Thing at a Time Down to 12 songs, "'98 Braves" would make the cut. "Sunrise" — Should Wallen choose to perform large portions of One Thing at a Time live, he'll need to memorize a heck of a lot of lyrics. "Last Night" — The lyric that bumps "Last Night" up to No.

Best Songs on Morgan Wallen's 'One Thing at a Time' (Billboard)

Maybe it’s coincidence that the song opens with a guitar intro nearly identical to “Born With a Beer in My Hand,” but it feel more like Wallen is bringing the listener full circle. Country lyrics are known for their clever wordplay and this song is no exception, as Wallen hopes to put their problems behind them “and turn this wine into water under the bridge.” “Even the devil don’t know this kind of hell,” he sings convincingly. It’s pure pop — so much so that it feels like it should be played back-to-back with Kelsea Ballerini’s similar ear worm, “Heartfirst.” Except since it’s Wallen, there’s no joy, only the acknowledgement that if he’s going to have to give up his ex, he can’t relinquish his cigarettes and liquor too. “I’ve been tryin’ to drown these demons, but damn if they don’t swim,” he sings as the knowledge that the one he loves is with someone else sinks in. An interpolation of The Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider” includes several lyrical references to “one more silver dollar.”

With 'One Thing At a Time' Morgan Wallen is ready to be country ... (Substream Magazine)

Logan White reviews the new Morgan Wallen album 'One Thing At a Time' and how it cements him as country's face for years to come.

In it, Wallen sings about the pain he feels seeing the girl he loves being with another man and eloquently sings with his southern drawl, “It’s a whole ‘nother level / Girl, even the devil don’t know this kind of hell.” As a happily engaged and soon-to-be married to the girl of his dreams in 6 weeks, even I start to feel for him in this song. He knows his audience and frankly he writes songs in a way that his audience feels like they know him, even better than before on One Thing At a Time. Once you do, and you sit with One Thing At a Time, you’ll see that Wallen did exactly what he wanted to do: write an album that touches every corner of what he does well and shows it off to the world. If I didn’t have the album for the week leading up to today, I’m not so sure I would have been able to get through it a few times to accurately write a review of how I feel about it. The previously teased “Keith Whitley” reflects on his own failures in a relationship and how he didn’t do enough to make it work. “In the Bible” is a mid-tempo country that highlights their country lifestyle and how if it was in the Bible, they would be saints. It’s layered over a sample of Young Thug’s “Lifestyle” and even still is nearly begging for a club remix, and rest assured that will come one way or another from local club DJ’s across the country. Similar to “Broadway Girls,” there’s not much country influence in this one other than a faint guitar twang in the background. In some ways a spiritual follow-up to Dangerous‘ “Livin’ The Dream,” “Born With a Beer In My Hand” shows that he’s learned from that story previously told. “Cowgirls” is the perfect blend of country and hip-hop that Wallen has really been experimenting with these last couple years. There’s an interesting sense of honesty here, as he ever-so-slightly touches on his drinking, calling out “I ain’t saying I swore it off for good / I’m just saying I’m doing the best I can / But what do you expect from a redneck / Hell, I was born with a beer in my hand.” It’s an intricate balance of recollecting his childhood, how alcohol has gotten him into trouble, while also singing about how drinking has given him plenty to sing about. Although the public ultimately got a whopping 9 songs ahead of time for the album came out, that still leaves them with an almost overwhelming 27 songs to dig through.

Review: Morgan Wallen's 'One Thing At A Time' (Rolling Stone)

Morgan Wallen Offers a Lot of Partying, but Not Much Introspection, on 'One Thing at a Time'. The controversial country-pop megastar had 36 songs to do some ...

“World likes to rear back and throw a few stones/So boy wants to throw a few stones of his own,” he muses, seemingly getting ready to warm up his pitching arm. Wallen’s lyrics mostly focus on bars and beers and whiskey, and women who are often unavailable, whether because of recent breakups or other attachments; the songs he’s co-written and selected for One Thing frequently take the Sia-tested route of using a central metaphor as a fulcrum for more precise observations. This megadose of Wallen doesn’t only ensure that One Thing at a Time will be lodged at the top of the charts for a while — alongside Dangerous, which is currently at Number Five on the Billboard 200 — it also reveals his preferred musical and lyrical tropes, as well as his fondness for simple, slippery vocal melodies that easily stick in listeners’ brains.

Then again, once he tells her about his new girlfriend and they have a laugh about the “dumb s—” his dad’s been up to, he lets his mom know that “all those prayers you thought you wasted on me must’ve finally made their way on through.” Another problem solved. But most of the rest blur together over nearly two hours in a sound neatly triangulated by those styles; the typical Morgan Wallen song blends country, rap and rock in a way similar to the typical Post Malone song (albeit in slightly different proportions). And for sure there are distinct examples of each, such as “Everything I Love,” which puts lush vocal harmonies over a galloping beat à la classic Alabama; the throbbing “180 (Lifestyle),” which interpolates elements of “Lifestyle” by Rich Gang, Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan; and “Whiskey Friends,” which all but borrows the central riff from the Killers’ “Mr. “Dangerous,” Wallen’s 2021 double LP, withstood a brief moment of backlash to become that year’s biggest album of any genre, and no fewer than three advance cuts from the new project, “One Thing at a Time,” are currently in the top 10 of Billboard’s country singles chart, including the sensual “Last Night,” which just logged its third week at No. Thanks to expected-to-be-ginormous numbers on Spotify and the like, “One Thing at a Time” will almost certainly debut atop the Billboard 200 just as Wallen prepares to launch a U.S. The song “Outlook” arrives 35 tracks into Morgan Wallen’s 36-track behemoth of a new album, which means that by the time you finally get to it, you’re pretty well primed for whatever hard-won knowledge he’s got to drop.
