Friday favourite: The forgotten 1990s F1 car adored by a Spa legend (autosport.com)

Compared to his successes in touring cars and sportscars, Eric van de Poele's Formula 1 career was thoroughly unfulfilling. But the five-time Spa 24 Hours ...

“And then one day with your old friend you go to Roma with a van and a trailer and you bring back your F1 car at home. Okay I knew the track, but it was not an advantage compared to the other ones" Eric van de Poele He didn’t know it at the time, but it would mark the end of his F1 career. “But the potential of that car was really incredible, it’s why I was competitive straight away in Spa. His race unfortunately didn’t last long, ending with a spin on lap three, but on home turf at Spa van de Poele was in confident mood. “It was incredible, in my warming lap I was qualified!” van de Poele remembers. For a comparison, as the slowest team of 2022 Williams was 2.516% off the pace. We knew the team was really down, but we had fantastic way to work together.” He’d stepped up to F1 in 1991 aboard the Modena Lamborghini and came within a whisker of a giantkilling fifth place in the San Marino Grand Prix, but never again managed to qualify it for a race. However van de Poele regards it not only as the best F1 car he drove in anger, but also “the best car I had on a track”. “I was just sad to have done only three races], I had not really a lot of time to be in the car. But BMW’s all-conquering M3 tin-top, with which van de Poele also won the DTM crown in 1987, and the Maserati MC12 GT1 he took to three wins between 2005 and 2008 are beaten to top spot by an unlikely candidate.

F1 Bahrain FP2 live: Second practice session underway ahead of ... (Sporting News)

Ahead of this weekend's opening race at the Bahrain Grand Prix, F1 teams have the chance to put their new cars and drivers through their paces in free ...

Sunday's 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. For viewers planning to live stream F1 in 2023, you can watch via the Sky Go app if you're an existing subscriber or you can purchase For fans in Canada, TSN will carry the English-language telecast of races. Elsewhere, Sling TV will also show the action, as too will FuboTV in the US. For Spanish-language viewers, they can find live broadcasts on ESPN Deportes, though ESPNews and ESPNU will also show some practice and qualifying sessions live throughout the year. Granted, we're not going to see teams go flat out at the Bahrain International Circuit on Friday but free practice should highlight where teams are this season in terms of pace a little more. The sessions last for an hour and drivers mostly use this time to find their rhythm which is especially important before this weekend's opening race. 40 minutes left of FP1: Red Bull's Sergio Perez goes fastest as Williams' rookie Logan Sargeant comes over his radio complaining of a burning smell in his car. 15 minutes left of FP1: Heart in mouth stuff for Ferrari's Carlos Sainz as he goes for a huge spin through the middle sector. 40 minutes left of FP2: Lewis Hamilton squeezes into P3 as it stands, though it must be noted that all the frontrunners are currently on softs tyres with one exception: Red Bull. Seems like the main cause is coming in the form of certain cars 'bottoming out'. 10 minutes left of FP2: Not long left for others to try and beat Alonso's quickest time so far.

F1 Fantasy: top picks, predictions and new rules for 2023 season (Motor Sport)

The best driver and constructor F1 Fantasy picks for the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix, including some need to know tips and tricks.

Drivers will be awarded for individual qualifying performance, with ten points given to pole position all the way down to 1 point for tenth. Players will have access to four ‘chips’, only one of which can be used to give you a boost before each race weekend. Ahead of each race, you will have two free transfers to customise your driver or constructor lineup. There is now no benefit in timing your transfers during the week: dynamic pricing used to allow players to trade their way to astronomical team values. Mini-league competitions, running over a small number of race weekends will offer the chance to win more. Red Bull gives you a good chance of bagging the ten bonus points for performing the fastest stop in each race: it was fastest in ten of last year’s 22 GPs. There’s a prominent countdown clock on the team selection page, to help you make the cut. A speedy team can also claim further points for the secind- and third-fastest stops. So if Logan Sargeant clinches pole after a haphazard Monte Carlo qualifying session, that’s probably your opportunity to play it. Fast-starters can rack up points from the moment that lights go out, with bonuses for overtaking and making up places (1 point per place in both cases). If they perform strongly, then their price should rise, giving you the opportunity to sell at a profit. However, they also represent an opportunity given their low values at the start of the season.

So, we kind of have kind of knew that a little bit in the test. Still a lot of things to improve in the car. Overall, the car is not too bad in the long run. A switch for most to end the race on the hards is predicted at this stage to be the optimum tyre strategy. And indeed, even Perez’s average on the softs came in at 0.471s slower each time by compared to his team-mate. [Lewis Hamilton](https://www.motorsport.com/driver/lewis-hamilton/1278/) and [George Russell](https://www.motorsport.com/driver/george-russell/21167/) were regularly snapping left as they fought to avoid going beyond track limits on the exit. In it, the Dutchman produced a consistent run and ended up lapping quicker than he started That close spread has raised expectations a big driver or indeed a whole team could have a shock qualifying exit in the opening elimination segments on Saturday. He used that palm to help rotate the wheel sufficiently, while helping support the right hand he injured in a mountain bike accident 13 days ago and revealed on testing’s eve. That resulted in a gap of 0.169s to Verstappen in second. Alonso was second behind Perez, his best effort late on the softs coming in 0.438s adrift. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are in a threatening position going into the Bahrain Grand Prix, but can Aston Martin led by Alonso take on the charging Red Bulls?

Will Verstappen and Red Bull repeat as champions? Max Verstappen is coming off of a banner season winning a record 15 races to successfully defend the drivers' ...

Las Vegas knows how to put on a show and it'll be interesting to see how F1 rolls the dice on Nov. On top of the aforementioned Austin event, Miami returns for its second year while a new street track on the Las Vegas strip makes its debut as the penultimate Grand Prix of the year. There's also the question of "do they or don't they get along" at Alpine between Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly. • The Canadian Grand Prix returns to Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on June 18. Their fortunes could change once their upgrade package arrives in late April for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix but that's four races away and McLaren could already be facing an uphill battle by then. Alonso might have also been fed up with reliability issues as he had five retirements in 2022 while Stroll and the now-retired Sebastian Vettel had fewer combined with two apiece. The "Mercedes Revenge Tour" didn't materialize, however, with their record eight-year reign as constructors' champions coming to an end. To think they could have had an even better season in 2022 had they not been hampered by reliability and weight issues to start the year. ... Last year we finished second in the drivers’ and constructors’ championship, now the next step to improve is being a world champion, so this is still our target.” Although Leclerc was a distant second, he finished second nonetheless in the championship with a career-best season. "(We) already improved across last year; this car has a few different things on it but from the start felt much more to what I liked." Something had to give and team principal Mattia Binotto took the fall.

Alonso steals the show as F1 season begins in Bahrain (Sportsnet.ca)

Fernando Alonso started his 20th season in Formula One with a strong opening day of practice at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

His third place at the Qatar GP in late 2021 was his first podium since 2014. That's quite worrying for other drivers, considering he crushed the competition last year with a record 15 wins. He is teammates with Lance Stroll, the son of Aston's executive chairman. The Dutchman is only 25 years old but has 35 wins. The two-time F1 champion has 32 career wins but none since a victory for Ferrari in 2013. “I mean, we’re not robots, everyone makes mistakes, but you tried to minimise it.” Leclerc was fifth in the first practice and fourth in P2. “But step by step.” He beat Charles Leclerc of Ferrari for the title with four races remaining in the season. You dedicate your life to your passion, you know your body better as well, so you train better, you eat better. The second of his two titles was with Renault in 2006 — when Verstappen was a nine-year-old racing karts. At the end of the day, he joked he has another decade left of racing in him.

Both options that have been employed feature a spoon-shaped mainplane, but this variant has a narrower central section and steeper transition to a much shallower outboard section. While not as potent a solution as the upwash strakes that teams used to place here, the swage line that Alpine has incorporated into the endplate is a nice feature that will surely provide an uptick in performance compared with a regularly contoured alternative. While Alfa completed its pre-season test without such an arrangement, it has been added for the race weekend. Mercedes introduced its widebody chassis blister solution as part of a larger package of updates at the British Grand Prix last year.

Can women race in F1? History of female Formula One drivers and ... (Sporting News)

There are no female drivers on the Formula 1 grid for the 2023 season, and it has been a long time since a woman competed in the competition.

Lombardi has competed the most of any women in F1 history. There will be seven race weekends consisting of three races each, giving 21 championship rounds in total. The one female driver with the closest links to a current F1 team is Jamie Chadwick. I look forward to seeing what we can achieve together." Females in Motorsport (FIM), a volunteer group that advocates for women's participation, noted that only 1.5 per cent of the show featured women. There are no rules preventing women from competing in Formula 1, but the current grid is exclusively male.

Emilia Romagna GP set for F1 qualifying experiment (F1i.com)

Formula 1 is set to trial a new tyre allocation qualifying experiment at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola in May.

Under the new format, drivers will receive three sets of Hards, four sets of Mediums and four sets of Softs during the weekend. While drivers are currently free to choose which compounds they use in the three segments of qualifying, the new experimental format will force drivers to use Hard tyres in Q1, Mediums in Q2, and the Soft rubber in Q3. In a bid to reduce the large inventory of tyres that Pirelli brings to each Grand Prix, F1 has devised a new format that will be trialed at two venues this season.

Max Verstappen lays down marker with masterful Bahrain F1 GP pole (The Guardian)

Red Bull took the front of grid after a dominant lap from the world champion, Fernando Alonso put his Aston Martin in fifth, while Mercedes ended up sixth ...

Lando Norris was in 11th for McLaren, whose poorly performing car was expected to struggle at the start of the season and was indeed off the pace. At 41 he is the oldest man on the grid and having made his debut in F1 in 2001 for Minardi is now in his 20th season in the sport. It was a moment he had longed for, once more able to mix it meaningfully at the business end of the field. For some time in the buildup to the opening qualifying session of the new Formula One season, there was a frisson of excitement in Bahrain it was impossible to ignore. That they were leapfrogged by Aston Martin, who use a Mercedes engine and who have found a full two seconds on track since this time last year, emphasised the straits in which Mercedes are now struggling. “We got it wrong last year, we thought we can fix it while sticking to this concept of car and it didn’t work out,” he said.

2023 F1 Bahrain Grand Prix live updates: Qualifying, race start time ... (The Athletic)

It's been a long three months of winter, but the Formula One offseason is over and racing is back for 2023. We're kicking things off with the Bahrain Grand ...

The team finished seventh in the championship last year, and didn’t finish a race higher than sixth. Drivers are able to go full throttle for 63.34% of the lap. Even after leading the second free practice session on Friday, Alonso said he was not thinking of seriously challenging for pole. When his race engineer radioed him to compromise one turn for a better line in the next, Stroll said, “I can’t man, I can’t. The leaderboard is reset again, with the final classification at the end of the session forming the grid from first (that's pole) to 10th. Aston Martin's two drivers have been the talk of the paddock in Bahrain, though for rather different reasons. The leaderboard is reset for Q2, which will give the drivers 15 minutes to set fresh lap times. He called it “a big gap” to the leading teams, and said Red Bull was one second per lap faster in the long runs than Mercedes. “We’re a long way off the guys in the front,” he added. It's been a long three months of winter, but the Formula One offseason is over and racing is back for 2023. Although both teams feel they have cured some of the big weaknesses of their cars from last year, neither appears to have taken the kind of step to really challenge Red Bull right now. “But we can be in the mix.”

Bahrain Grand Prix F1 Qualifying Press Conference (Grand Prix 247)

Featuring pole winner Max Verstappen(Red Bull Racing), second-placed Sergio Perez (Red Bull Racing) and third-placed Charles Leclerc (Ferrari). Track Interviews ...

Q: Checo, you know, a lot of a lot of the people in that team very well. It’s better if we make sure that all the cars are close to each other and more competitive instead of spicing things up in that way, which I think is probably for the show. MV: Yeah, I mean, after testing I was very happy and then then I jumped in the car in FP1 and it was a big shock. CL: Oh, they’ve shown a very promising race pace in FP2, but again, FP2, it’s very difficult to judge because you don’t know the fuel level they had in the car. I mean, qualifying to race is anyway a different car in terms of how it behaves, but you still want to be quick over one lap and that was a big struggle for me. Because as much as we need to understand the bad days, I think we also need to understand the good days. Or was it more of a surprise that you got the most out of the car given the balance issues you discussed? I think we were in a fight for pole, which was a good surprise, to be honest, because I did not expect that after testing and after the free practices that were a little bit difficult. I think there were sandbagging a bit through the first days of testing and in during the weekend. But I think, as I progress, I was able to learn my way around the balance I had and get a good Q3 lap in the end, but not enough to beat Max. I think in the end, we knew we had to compromise a bit the quali-pace for tomorrow’s race. Do you think the balance will be more suited to the race run for you?
