Van Dijk and Salah provide lift for Liverpool to clinch win over Wolves (The Guardian)

Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah scored for Liverpool to boost their top-four hopes with a 2-0 home victory over Wolves.

The stalemate appeared to be over when Núñez slotted into the far corner following a determined run into the area by Jota. Fabinho was booked for catching Mario Lemina’s knee with his studs after the Wolves midfielder had dived into a challenge to retrieve a loose first touch. The Brazil international pleaded his innocence but was fortunate to escape a second yellow card when clipping João Gomes as the substitute attempted to break away. Elliott should have opened the scoring when Jota released Núñez to the byline and the Uruguay international floated a perfect cross into Wolves’ six-yard box. Lopetegui replaced the booked Sarabia with Adama Traoré at half-time in a bid to rediscover the urgency that had vanished from Wolves’ attacking display. Victory lifted Liverpool to sixth and six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand.

The responsibility of the local police was covered up by the authorities; Liverpool fans were unfairly blamed. The Liverpool supporters’ associations have asked for a formal apology from the French government for the lies that were apparently told. Football is the sport of the working classes. In Wales and in France, Rugby Union is a working-class sport. And it has no rugby club of any size — neither Rugby League nor Rugby Union. Liverpool 2-0 Wolves: Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah find the back of ... (Daily Mail)

IAN LADYMAN AT ANFIELD: Liverpool were not particularly convincing. They were a little leaden at times. What happened here against Real Madrid has taken a ...

Improvement did arrive later in the first half and on the back of it Liverpool could and should have scored. At times we looked in a rush but we calmed down and increased the pressure. Liverpool were the better team in the second half as the Wolves threat receded. Young midfielder Stefan Bajcetic – a ray of light in the Anfield gloom – had a shot on the turn from a Salah cross in just the third minute. 'I wasn't worried after the VAR goal but the reaction was really good. But when Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a free-kick from the left in the 73rd minute, Virgil van Dijk rose to meet it. With Liverpool and their supporters buoyed, Klopp's team came again down the left four minutes later. It doesn't matter how they go in and certainly it didn't here. They may not be enough to completely turn around this season for Liverpool but they turned around this game and for now that feels like more than enough. For Jurgen Klopp and his players, fourth place is the height of their ambition this season and they remain outsiders even for that. Jose Sa saved but when Diogo Jota returned the ball, Van Dijk headed in conventionally and his team were in the lead. With 17 minutes remaining Liverpool did not look winning this game.
