First-rounder acquired in the Bo Horvat trade is the biggest piece going to Detroit.
“I think when you have people in and out of the lineup, it is tough,” he said. The team also bid goodbye to Horvat, Vancouver’s captain and leading goal scorer, in the first major deal of the NHL trade season. “The biggest difference probably comes in the room,” he said Wednesday. Defenceman Ethan Bear was placed on injured reserve after taking a puck to the face in a loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday. I really liked the way our team structure is going right now. “He has steadily progressed throughout his time in Detroit to show that he is a top pairing defenceman in this league.

The Canucks remain in the running to potentially win the NHL draft lottery, with North Vancouver native Connor Bedard as the projected No. The Red Wings now have five picks in the first two rounds of the 2023 draft and nine picks total. Hronek provides the Canucks with another top-four defenseman who could be part of their future plans. In addition, the Red Wings were able to add even more draft capital. The Red Wings deciding to move on from Hronek came as a bit of a surprise, raising questions if the team could be on the verge of another move.

The 25-year-old Hronek has 38 points in 60 games this season while averaging 21:32 of ice time per game.
The first-rounder is the same pick Vancouver got from the Islanders in the Horvat trade, and is top-12 protected, but there is now potential for Detroit to have two picks in the top 20 of this draft. If the Red Wings did not want to be the ones to pay that raise, then moving him now makes sense, especially for a return that includes both a first and second round pick. The price is really steep and timing is questionable, however, for a Canucks team that isn’t close to contending and should probably instead be rebuilding. We have yet to hear from general manager Steve Yzerman, but the most logical answer would have something to do with Hronek’s breakout year and it’s timing with relation to his contract. Hronek instantly becomes the club’s second best defender, especially on the right side where they’ve been starving for help. Vancouver’s long been searching for a way to upgrade its blue line.
Detroit is also sending their fourth-round pick in this year's draft to Vancouver.

We are happy to continue to add younger pieces to build out the core of this team.” Several league sources were very confused by the trade, especially since the Canucks seemed to be so set on adding picks for this year’s draft, which is considered a deep draft. He’s a handy player on the power play — but power play time will be limited in Vancouver, given Quinn Hughes. Article content
The Vancouver Canucks have made a major trade ahead of Friday's deadline, and no, it doesn't involve J.T. Miller or Brock Boeser.
A 25-year-old right-shot defenceman, Hronek has been a top-pairing blueliner for the Red Wings for the past four seasons. Canucks GM Patrik Allvin has traded a conditional first-round pick and a second-round pick in this year’s draft to the Detroit Red Wings for defenceman Filip Hronek and a fourth-round pick. The first-round pick will be in this year’s draft, provided it’s not a top-12 pick.
Hronek, a 25-year-old defenseman, was selected by Detroit in the second round (No. 53) of the 2016 NHL Draft. He has 38 points (nine goals, 29 assists) in 60 ...
The first-round pick the Red Wings received could potentially move to the 2024 NHL Draft. The Canucks (24-31-5) are 19 points behind the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers for the two wild cards in the Western Conference. The Red Wings also received a fourth-round pick in the 2023 draft.

There is nothing wrong with Filip Hronek the player. As you'll see in Jason Bukala's breakdown. But it will be asked: is this a trade the Vancouver Canucks ...
Vancouver then spent one of the assets (the conditional first) and another asset (the second) to acquire Hronek and a fourth-round pick. (The players and the pick immediately become assets to the Canucks). Aatu Raty’s trajectory is still to be determined, and the fourth-round selection will obviously have to take time to work itself through the system. The pick becomes an unprotected 2024 first-rounder if it’s in the top (12) this season. He also has some push back (97 hits) and willingness to get in the lane to block shots (54). Management's goal is to get back to contending for the playoffs in a year or two. This is the top point-per-game scoring average he has had in his career (.63). This will not be a deliberate build up through the draft. That very well could be over the salary cap already (buyouts or further trades could fix that). Well, nothing good ever lasts, does it? Earlier this week, we extolled the virtues of the Vancouver Canucks front office and their patient asset management, ...
In fact, if the 2023 draft class is really as strong as they say, that’s probably equivalent to a first round pick in most years. At that point, the pick reverts back to the Islanders — as long as they choose for it to — and is swapped out for an unprotected 2024 first round pick. Simply put, the Canucks needed those picks a lot more than they needed whatever Filip Hronek is going to contribute over the next few seasons. There’s a very real chance that the Islanders sink even further in the standings next year. That’s the very definition of bad asset management. The Eastern Conference is currently in the middle of an arms race. This, for a team that is supposed to be going through some sort of a youth movement. In that case, the pick becomes unprotected. Sure, it’s also possible that the Islanders rise up the standings, but it’s not very likely. If the Draft Lottery were held today, that pick would not be included. It’s the other side of the trade that we take serious issue with. While he might not be quite as future-based an asset as most would like to see the team bring in, he’s still just 25 years old and is already one heck of a right-handed defender.

Through 60 games with the Red Wings in 2022–23, Hronek collected nine goals and 38 points while averaging 21:32. The Red Wings originally selected Hronek in the second round (No. Selke Trophy in 2011 and twice surpassing 70 points in a season while wearing the number with the team.

It will be interesting to see if Tocchet opts to have Hronek on the penalty kill. This suggests that not only is he the best defenceman in terms of puck possession, but is able to effectively transition the puck out of his zone as the primary puck-moving defenceman on his pairing to generate good scoring opportunities. While points aren’t the end-all be-all of his game, it certainly is an attractive selling point that makes him all the more valuable. Because of the way Hronek is used, his increase in produce could be a flash in the pan. But what is a little worrying is how in the past two seasons, his shooting percentage sat at 3.8 and 1.3 respectively. As a byproduct of being Detroit’s best defenceman, Hronek has gotten plenty of special teams action that he’s made the most of. Hronek currently leads all Detroit defencemen in goals, assists, and points, his total of 38 points ranking him as the second-highest scorer on the team, as well as leading all defencemen in shots (122). Though usually matching against the top 4 of opposing teams, he receives the most starts in the offensive zone amongst Red Wing defencemen with over 40 games played both off faceoffs (50.31) and shift starts (48.18). A similar story can be seen with Chiarot, who drags Hronek down into the high 30’s across most of the rate statistics. You might think that title belongs to Moritz Seider, but the sophomore German is currently trying to bust through a slump of his own. For the purposes of this article, we’ll be focusing on Hronek, the player. We will remove what we think about the acquisition cost for the Vancouver to get Filip Hronek from the Detroit Red Wings.
The Detroit Red Wings traded away a young, high-rising defenseman in Filip Hronek for two valuable draft picks; here are some replacement options.
We could see a combination of the prospects, trades, and free agents all be sorted into this team, trying to fill the hole that Hronek has left. Yzerman wants the young guys to grow in the minors and use these big defensive guys as the stopgap. I love the idea of Zach Werenski or Ivan Provorov, as both players look to be on the wrong timeline for their respective teams. Looking past that, if we don’t see a trade now, we could still see one over the off-season for a young defender that could fill Hronek’s spot. With the last few days being as chaotic as they have been in the NHL, anything can happen in these next few days leading up to the deadline on Friday. Luckily, they have multiple avenues to go down, whether an immediate fix or a fix later in the off-season.
Canucks defenceman Filip Hronek was once compared to a Norris Trophy winner. He's also scored way more than any other Canucks defenceman.
That means the defender has had multiple opportunities to play in the spring’s World Hockey Championships. He posted 11 points in 10 games and was named the tournament’s best defenceman. Hronek also led the team with four points in five games. The Czechs finished fourth in the tournament. Unfortunately, the Canucks don’t have a responsible left-shot defender like Maatta. He was named team MVP after his performance. Hronek was at his best when paired with a responsible, stay-at-home partner. When he was with Chiarot, who is a dreadful player analytically, Hronek’s effectiveness did drop. The 25-year-old had his ups and downs in 2021-22. Rookie Moritz Seider surpassed him on the depth chart and on the Red Wings’ first power play unit. [Max Bultman of The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/3937028/2022/11/26/red-wings-filip-hronek/), Hronek went two entire seasons during the pandemic without being in a press conference.
