Mikael Backlund had a short-handed breakaway.

After some shaky early goaltending, the Flames stuck with it and went toe-to-toe with the NHL's best team at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The other was Brian Leetch, who recorded 247 in his illustrious career. “I’ve been really privileged or fortunate, I was in Chicago and we named Derek Graham captain, in Calgary we named Jarome captain, so two pretty special guys to say you managed, coached and are friends with them. They’re now five points back of the Western Conference’s second wild-card spot with 21 games left in the regular season. “Fought back, 3-2 lead,” Flames head coach Darryl Sutter said. The tide felt as if it had well and truly turned after Huberdeau’s goal. We’ve got to score a couple in the first period maybe and change the game, but can’t deny how hard guys worked tonight.” It was no surprise to see Jacob Markstrom replace Vladar between the pipes at the start of the second period. “Even then, we’ve got to win that game. It’s a question we have to ask ourselves. He was great, but that won’t make the home side feel any better. We’ve got to find a way to win that game,” said Flames forward Jonathan Huberdeau. Of course, in classic 2022-23 Calgary Flames fashion, they would take a late penalty and on that powerplay the Bruins would capitalize after Nikita Zadorov’s brain malfunctioned. The Flames would get one back in the second period from Blake Coleman, but after two periods of play the shots were 39-9. Use the promo code “WINCOLUMNCGY” when you checkout!

Top Calgary Flames prospect Matthew Coronato will have a big decision to make in the next four or five weeks. The Harvard forward has to determine whether ...
“We always say to these guys we’re there to help him in his development and be productive on the ice. “Maybe he could be more productive on the wing. At that point, the Flames will have eight games left. “I talk about the heavy with Matt - you’ve got to have strength. Where he goes, and where he’s going to score goals in the NHL, you’ve got to be strong on the skates and have a strong stick and low centre of gravity to go into those areas against those big redwoods. “Yeah, you’d like em’ all six-foot five, but at the end of the day he’s a thick kid -- he’s got the legs, the big arse and he has really put his work in physically,” said Treliving, who drafted Coronato out of the USHL, where he had 57 goals in his last 59 games. Last year, when Coronato and the Flames decided it was best for him to return for his sophomore season, he reiterated he had, “no other intention other than to play for the Flames.” The Flames would obviously like Coronato to join the team for the final handful of games, see how he measures up as a pro and eliminate the risk of him returning to college for a third year, which would leave him a fourth year away from being a free agent. Fox was a third-round pick of the Flames in 2016, who informed the club he wouldn’t sign in Calgary, forcing the team (and subsequently Carolina) to trade his rights to the Rangers, where the New York native has gone on to win a Norris Trophy.
"I think we've given up too many goals against," Flames head coach Darryl Sutter said Wednesday.
You’ve got to start building it in the gym and start building it in practice.” We need to get those two points here.” “Not in March,” Markstrom said. You’ve just got to work on details and work on the game and trust. We’ve got to snap out of it here. I still believe we win 21 in a row. That’s how I feel.” “I think we are working even harder than last year. I think that we both got even better than last year. You don’t want to start behind and chase the game. “We’ve just got to come up with some saves. It’s obviously easier to play with a lead than behind.

If a team comes to the Flames and offers a first or second round pick for a third pairing defenceman, they’d have to take it. He is showing signs of being the player he was on his first few years in the NHL. He was brought in to be an important goal scorer on the wing and power play. He would add an intimidating presence to the Wild blue line down the stretch drive and into the playoffs. Drouin can help in both of those categories and not cost much in assets going out the door. Rational: I have been talking about the idea of bringing in Drouin for a couple weeks now. Backlund would also help in the faceoff circle and on the penalty kill. He is set to be a UFA in 2024. He is going to be 31-years-old in April. The lead up to the 2023 NHL trade deadline has been bonkers to say the least. You’d think that is bound to change over the next 48 hours. Particularly for the top teams in the Eastern Conference.
While most eyes are on the NHL Trade Deadline, the Calgary Flames' prospects continue to shine. Both Parker Bell and Lucas Ciona had huge weeks for their ...
- Not to be outdone, Lucas Ciona had a goal and two assists this week for Seattle. The forward prospect had three assists this week for the Tri-City Americans. - Two more assists this week for Jack Beck. - A goal and an assist for Yan Kuznetsov this week. - One assist this week for Matt Coronato at Harvard. For reference, Connor Mackey in his final season at Mankato was about a 2/3 point-per-game and was one of the most coveted free agents in his year. - William Stromgren played three games in the SHL this week, but did not record any points. He’s been very fine for the ECHL side this year. - Two goals this week for Connor Zary. - Dustin Wolf saw action twice this week, and saw his numbers go up a touch. He’s developed into a really strong player for the Wranglers this year. The Calgary Wranglers had a very rough week, but a number of players were exceptional in spite of the results.
Linus Ullmark was spectacular for Boston and is the sole reason this wasn't a complete blowout from the get-go. 3v3 the coaching staff has no idea what they are ...
In The Crease – Well neither of our guys did enough to out-duel the eventual 2023 Vezina winner in Ullmark. This was one of the most one-sided games in terms of possession and chances the Flames have played during my run. Taken By Chance – So the Flames surrendered just 2 high danger chances and yet the Bruins did not score on either of them. Outside of their 5v5 play they had one bonehead mistake shorthanded, a bad play in overtime, and a couple bad goals by the goalie that started. 50/50 is so hard to actually achieve I give a bit of leeway on the metrics for level of acceptability. For instance, 42% isn’t great but it’s not terrible – you can deal with that as long as it’s not a nightly occurrence. Hard to argue any ice time metrics when the results were so heavily in Calgary’s favour, but if you wanted a goal maybe finding some of those almost 12 minutes you gave Lucic (79.31%) and Lewis (67.32%) and allocated them to some better scorers. Corsi King – It is worth noting that Pelletier (86.35%) and Huberdeau (86.32%) were only out for 2 shot attempts against in 11 minutes of ice time. The sum of this whole season’s parts needs looked at and it’s just been not good enough. This is maybe just the third time we’ve seen an overall team effort like that this season which is why they find themselves on the outside of the playoffs looking in. It is hard to come in here and type out that the Calgary Flames just played their best game of the season, but that is exactly what happened. From the moment the puck dropped every single Calgary player was relentless on the forecheck and gave the Boston Bruins next to no time to think about what to do with the puck.
