Detroit Red Wings pummeled by Ottawa Senators two nights in a row (Octopus Thrower)

The Detroit Red Wings failed to show up two nights in a row for back-to-back must-win games in Ottawa just days away from the NHL trade deadline.

Ottawa outshot the Detroit Red Wings to the tune of 27-17. Detroit went an abysmal 0-8 on the power play, while Ottawa went 2-6. The Detroit Red Wings were pummeled for the second time in two nights by the Ottawa Senators. The Detroit Red Wings were 0-5 on the power play through two periods and only recorded 11 shots on goal, with no real quality scoring chances. The term must-win is often overused, but Tuesday night in Ottawa felt like a must-win situation for the Detroit Red Wings. Kubalik received a long pass from Olli Maatta, broke in on the left wing, and beat goaltender Mads Sogaard to the glove side.

GARRIOCH: Watson scores twice as sizzling Senators roar into ... (Ottawa Sun)

The Senators closed out February with 6-3-1 record to skate back into the NHL's playoff picture.

Stutzle tied it up 1-1 with a nifty effort on a penalty shot at 4:08. “You guys don’t watch practice?.” Watson said with a smile. Fans hadn’t even settled into their seats and there was no shortage of action before the first TV timeout. The Senators became the first team in regular season to score on the power play, even strength, shorthanded and with a penalty shot on four separate goals in one period. Giroux’ 25th of the season was the 982nd point of his career. Naturally, that’s exactly what happened in this one. The reality is the Wings were embarrassed and beaten by an Ottawa team that looked like it wanted the two points more than Detroit did. “It’s not our job to make those decisions but we wanted to leave it all out there going down this final stretch,” said Tkachuk. 17 game against Chicago and the Senators finished with a 4-2-1 record in the seven-game stretch since. We’ll have to get better. Alex DeBrincat, Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle chipped in with goals. Article content

He gets a shorty, gets another one and goes to the net. I thought he was a presence in both games." "We knew right from the start these two games (against Detroit) were going to be really important for us, especially in the standings," Stutzle said. He never got comfortable." With a 6-1 win Tuesday night, the Ottawa Senators swept their two-game series against the Detroit Red Wings — and started a new rivalry.

It just kind of shows the people we have in the locker room and the composure and how we want to finish hard." It's not going to happen every night, but they know the way they have to play." "We've taken a lot of pride all year in not giving up easy offence, you guys have seen that," said Lalonde. "Throughout my career I've always been able to find a way to score goals," Watson said.
