Schenn, 33, has 21 points (three goals and 18 assists) through 55 games this season.

The Canucks received [Anthony Beauvillier](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/anthony-beauvillier-zYLT8HcJq5ANwDre/), [Aatu Räty](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/aatu-raty-rN7RdzRCXqNE8KOo/) and a protected first-round selection in the 2023 NHL Draft in the return for Horvat. [Toronto Maple Leafs](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/leafs/) have acquired defenseman [Luke Schenn](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/luke-schenn-tSkchRml95C1MJw0/) from the [Vancouver Canucks](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/canucks/) in exchange for a 2023 third-round pick, the teams announced Tuesday. The deal is also a distinct signal that the Islanders are still aiming to make the playoffs despite their precarious place in the standings. At 26 years old and a pending unrestricted free agent, there’s a good chance that Lou Lamoriello has already identified Engvall as a player the team would like to extend, as it’s not usually the longtime general manager’s style to simply trade for rentals. Schenn adds even more depth to the Leafs defence, and a particular style of depth. Toronto also sent [Pierre Engvall](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/pierre-engvall-eDcRjBlnXNcSJ20i/) to the [Islanders](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/islanders/) for a 2024 third-round draft pick. That he spent the first four seasons of his NHL career with the Leafs should undoubtedly help his acclimatization period. At the end of the day, a third-round pick is a roughly fair value and it’s a deal the Canucks had to make. Where Schenn fits with the Leafs remains to be seen, but he feels like the kind of defenseman who could work on the bottom pair, coming in and out of the lineup when needed. The club now has seven draft picks in the first four rounds of the deep 2023 NHL Entry Draft, which is a decent position. The Vancouver Canucks would’ve preferred better than a 2023 third-round pick in return for Schenn. The veteran defenseman is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season and carries an $850,000 cap hit, according to CapFriendly.

The league did send out a memo essentially saying a player can’t sit on LTIR if they’re healthy and wait for the regular season to end. The Leafs sent their third round pick in 2023 to Vancouver for Luke Schenn ($850k). Pierre Engvall ($2.25m) got traded to the New York Islanders for a third round pick in 2024. A first-round pick will also be involved.— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) This trade was partially a cap dump, partially recouping assets, and partially upgrading at a position the Leafs weren’t planning to play Sandin in. It was in Spring 2012, a few months before the former fifth overall pick in 2008 would be traded to Philadelphia for James van Riemsdyk and beginning another era of dreamy, tall, chiselled Leafs.
