The Oilers announced Tuesday morning that the club has traded Jesse Puljujarvi, the winger they drafted fourth overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, ...
Puljujarvi later rejoined the Oilers in October 2020. Puljujarvi joins fellow Finns Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Antti Raanta with the Hurricanes. Puistola, who hails from Finland, was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NHL draft by Carolina and has yet to play an NHL game.
The Edmonton Oilers have traded Jesse Puljujarvi to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Patrik Puistola.
In 317 career games, all with the Oilers, Puljujarvi has 51 goals and 112 points. He notes the $3 million in space could be used by Edmonton in another move prior to Friday's trade deadline. “Jesse possesses a great blend of size and skill, and he will add to the depth of our forward group,” Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said.

At the Puljujarvi media avail, Holland stated that he is now willing to trade his 2023 first-round pick for a “pure rental”, a clear change in direction as the deadline nears. Veteran netminder Antti Raanta also hails from that Nordic country. Whether by coincidence or design, Ken Holland has given the likeable Finn a very good landing spot among friends on a highly-competitive team — long a rumoured destination for this player. Now 22, the former third-round pick from 2019 leads his Finnish Liiga team Jukurit Mikkeli in scoring with 15-23-38 in 56 games. The disposition of that cap hit is obviously the key to the deal, and opens some much-needed space for another trade or trades in the coming hours or days. Finally, resolution of the Jesse Puljujarvi saga.

They receive a 22-year-old prospect in Puistola, who has 15 goals and 38 points with Jukurit in the Liiga, the highest division of Finnish hockey. The Canes had to wait after acquiring Pacioretty because he underwent Achilles surgery in the summer. Puljujarvi will be a pending restricted free agent and has never quite achieved the heights expected after going fourth in the draft.

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oilers have dealt embattled right-winger Jesse Puljujarvi to the Carolina Hurricanes. ...
Oilers sent Puljuarvi to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for prospect forward Puistola, 22-year-old third-round draft pick.
Sometimes that’s all it takes. “It’s really fun to be playing in the NHL on the same team. Let it be said that he’s a great guy who always worked hard and cast a positive vibe, digging in and trying to re-invent himself under immense scrutiny. But he had his reset, going back to Finland for a full year to get older, stronger, more confident and more experienced. They rushed him at the start, no question, which stunted his first couple of seasons and forced him to call a time out on his NHL career in 2019. If Puljujarvi blossoms into a grinning fan favourite worth 25 goals a year, we’ll know. But, unfortunately, we’re at this day today and we have to move forward.” “They weren’t opposed to the money but thought it was best to get a fresh start. The Edmonton Oilers cleared some cap and the Carolina Hurricanes took on another project player -- with room to still make an impactful move.
He will also have to pay better attention to detail defensively, but that’s an area of his game that can be coached in (he just has to buy in). For example, his 112 hits show he is willing to play hard in the trenches and lean on opponents with his 6-foot-4, 201-pound frame. They have a specific plan in mind when drafting, signing, and trading for players and they feel Puljujarvi fits their mold. Puistola is the leading scorer for Jukurit in Finland's Liiga (Finland’s first division). I have to give credit for the thought comparison. He has a gear through the neutral zone. The Hurricanes, meantime, are swimming in cap space, still with over $7 million available to them by Friday. He’s been coming on in his role higher up the line-up, playing tougher, more consistent defensive hockey. It’s safe to say that Ekholm presents some risk to the Oilers given his age (he’ll be 33 in May), cap hit ($6.25 million per before retention) and term (three more years on his deal after this season). And I’m going to warn you once again not to put any weight in the assessment of folks relying on publicly-available stats and a few viewing of the player in order to rate him just now. This trade of Barrie could also mean more regular ice time for big Vincent Desharnais on the right side. Instead Bouchard gets a major vote of confidence in that he’s next in line to run the Edmonton power play. But a guy like Mattias Ekholm is what the Oilers D has been sorely lacking. Barrie leaves the Oilers as part of the trade having led the club's defence in scoring over his three seasons in Oil Country, posting 25 goals and 107 assists in 109 games. The 32-year-old Swedish defenceman has three years remaining on his contract following the 2022-23 NHL season at an average annual value (AAV) of $6.25 million.
The Oilers send defenceman Tyson Barrie, prospect forward Reid Schaefer, a 2023 first-round draft pick and fourth rounder in 2024 to the Preds.

Hours after offloading Jesse Puljujarvi's contract, the Edmonton Oilers made a big move to acquire Mattias Ekholm from Nashville.
He has time on his side, but I haven’t seen a significant step forward from the player I watched last season. Reid Schaefer was the Oilers' first round pick (32nd overall) in 2022 and is playing in the WHL for the Seattle Thunderbirds. Over the past few days the Predators have stock piled their draft cupboards. In a completely different direction, the Oilers have added veteran defenceman Mattias Ekholm instead, in exchange for It’s somewhat difficult to put into words, but Ekholm is a player who relies on his high-end hockey IQ in all three zones. Barrie did nothing to earn a ticket out of town. He’s capable with the puck, but isn’t a player who will lead the rush often.
