Oilers' roster holes overshadow another McDavid master class (Sportsnet.ca)

With the trade deadline only days away, two glaring needs for the Edmonton Oilers overshadowed another master class performance by Connor McDavid.

A couple of plays here and there and it’s a different game." We all know when he’s on the ice we want to take away his time and space and he still finds it. "You win games in the third period," said Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman. You can’t hang your head when you play the NHL’s best team to a virtual standstill. I thought we played them hard and gave ourselves a chance to win." "We are a strong team.

GAME RECAP: Bruins 3, Oilers 2 (NHL.com)

McDavid nets his 50th goal of the season as the Oilers fall in a tightly-contested battle between two of the League's best at Rogers Place on Monday night.

We showed a lot of character tonight and it was a good game for us to realize there's another level to our game. "It's a good team over there and we made one or two little mistakes and little miscommunication and ends up in your net. So I think we're at the point now where we're confident in what kind of group we have and you've got to be able to beat those good teams." "Yeah, I think if you look at the game tonight, our team's competition level, our effort and our attention to detail for the most part was excellen. They didn't need much in order to get to score, but when we broke down, they made us pay and we were unable to find the equalizer there in the third period." I thought that we executed on a bunch of plays, a couple we didn't, and they were really good team and made us pay. "I thought there were good parts to his game and then parts that can improve a little bit," Woodcroft said. Obviously Boston is the top team in the NHL for a reason. "But what we're seeing on ice, the excellence, it's hard to describe night in and night out any differently than I have." Louis Blues can get back up to speed and recapture his offensive form that led to nine goals in his first 30 games in Edmonton. Minutes into the second period, the Russian dumped Hampus Lindholm into the Oilers bench right onto the laps of McDavid and Warren Foegele with another hard check that drew applause from the Rogers Place crowd. After escaping the penalty box, Kostin pursued a rimmed puck at 4-on-4 all the way to Boston's end, where the Russian beat out the icing and heard the call of his captain coming down from the Oilers bench.

"They're the best team in the league. He has really taken a step in regards to attacking the net more and taking it on himself and I think you see the results." Edmonton tied it at 12:20 of the second period with the teams playing four players aside as Klim Kostin came out of the box and hustled to feed the puck to McDavid who undressed Swayman with a deke to record his 50th goal in his 61st game of the season. That's the mindset that's allowed us to have the success we've had." With the victory they became the fastest team to record 46 wins in NHL history, needing just 59 games to do so. I'm not trying to sound tacky, it's just the reality of our team.

Upgrades might prove too costly for cap-strapped Oilers as trade ... (Globalnews.ca)

"We're dollar in, dollar out, so, we start bringing in people with big cap numbers, we're going to have to do some real gymnastics here to move people out."

The Oilers most pressing need is to find a way out of salary-cap jail. Winger Jesse Puljujarvi, the former first-round pick who is in the final year of his contract that carries a $3-million cap hit, has been on the market for months, with no takers. As it stands, the Oilers already have over $71 million in committed salary for next season. I think, as a group of coaches, what we try and do is you try and ask your players to control the things within their control. “It’s part and parcel of where we’re at in the NHL schedule. Despite the penalty-kill and goaltending issues, the Oilers have only lost two games in regulation out of their last 18. That’s a credit to our players and their hard work.” Those two match-ups offer Holland the chance to make some last-second assessments. Even Chychrun, with a cap hit of $4.6 million, is a luxury the Oilers can’t afford unless the Coyotes agree to eat a part of the salary or help comes from another team willing to “buy down” part of what he’s owed in exchange for assets. The problem with a big name like Karlsson is he carries an $11.5-million cap hit on a contract that goes until 2026-27. Only six teams have a worse penalty kill rate than the Oilers 75 per cent clip. And they might not address the Oilers’ most glaring issues.

GDB 61.0 Wrap Up: Oilers battle hard but come up short in 3-2 loss ... (Oilers Nation)

it's a battle to be an Oilers fan sometimes. So when Connor McDavid opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game, the hope was that the boys would use ...

- The Oilers cheated for offence early in the game and the Bruins knew exactly how to handle it. - Stuart Skinner was back in the net for his 32nd start of the season and looking to get the Oilers back in the win column after he was unfortunately tagged with the loss on Saturday despite coming into the game in relief. - Pavel Zacha restored the Bruins’ lead (3-2) on a second effort play that saw him dive toward a look puck near the crease and chip it over Stuart Skinner as he was about to cover up. Boston just sat back and forced the Oilers to make long passes that didn’t make any sense. To their credit, the Oilers did a pretty good job of ramping up the pressure in the third period even though the shot count could have been a touch higher, but to their credit, the Bruins did a better job of shutting the door and locking things down. If the Oilers were going to add a third loss to Boston’s totals, they needed to get more pucks on Swayman and they needed to get some bodies in front of the net just in case he left any garbage to clean up. - I love the way Vinny Desharnais plays hockey and how he never hesitates to mix it up. The good news is that the boys started the frame with some jump in their step and it led to a handful of decent scoring chances that culminated in Connor McDavid’s 50th goal of the year to tie the game at two apiece. [50TH OF THE YEAR](/news/connor-mcdavid-has-reached-the-50-goal-mark-for-the-first-time-in-his-career)IN ONLY 61 GAMES!!! McDavid added another goal (2-2) to tie the game — HIS And as the period wore on, both sides manufactured plenty of opportunities to score but it was only the Bruins that were able to get the job done, wrestling the lead away with just under five minutes to go. The bad news was that the Oilers were only able to keep the game tied for seven minutes before the Bruins restored their lead with a late goal from Pavel Zacha with less than a minute left to play.

PRE-GAME REPORT: Oilers vs. Bruins (NHL.com)

The Oilers take on the league-leading Boston Bruins on Monday night to open a three-game homestand at Rogers Place.

"We're not the only team in the NHL that's dealing with this, so you look anywhere in the NHL and teams are dealing with those types of schedules. The Oilers are the only team the Bruins have yet to play this season... "In Pittsburgh, we executed early and we built a lead first half of the game, and that's the way the game played out. "Then they have skilled players to make you pay if you start making mistakes, so we know that coming in tomorrow, we're going to have to play to our identity -- a fast game, keep it simple through the neutral zone. Boston netminder Linus Ullmark scored an empty-net goal in addition to picking up his 30th win of the season in a 3-1 win over the Canucks on Saturday to help stretch the Bruins win streak to six games. "I think everybody in here is excited and if we're not, we should be to play a team like this and especially facing them twice now in the coming week. In this room, we have a lot of confidence in our group that we can play with anybody, and when we're on our game, we're a team to be reckoned with." "I think that's a lesson that came out of that game, the road game in Pittsburgh. The other game against Columbus, I just didn't think we started the game on time and we needed to have a little bit of a shake-up in order to get everybody on their toes. The Oilers have demonstrated they can play with any team in the NHL this season when they play their style of game. We're back to our focus of taking the one game at a time and Boston's here tonight -- a really good team that presents a lot of challenges. The Bruins will be the first test on a daunting schedule for the Oilers over the next few weeks.

3 takeaways from the Bruins' win over Connor McDavid and the Oilers (Boston.com)

Boston extended its winning streak to seven games with a 4-3 victory over Edmonton Monday night. Jeremy Swayman and Garnet Hathaway stopping an Oilers attack ...

“It’s been the difference for most of the year,” Montgomery said to NESN’s Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley. Boston’s second-year goalie delivered another solid performance, stopping 22 Edmonton shots to improve to 15-4-4 on the season. That wasn’t the only injury scare coming out of Monday”s performance in Edmonton. Garnet Hathaway and Dmitry Orlov notched their first assists with the Bruins after finding Tomas Nosek all alone in front. Through two games, Orlov and Hathaway provided more stability to an already deep squad. Brad Marchand inadvertently collided with Oilers defenseman Darnel Nurse during his first shift Monday night. McDavid’s second goal of the night hardly rattled the league-leading Bruins. His physical and heavy forechecking presence is already meshing well within Boston’s bottom six. “I think we’re really excited about our group. Hathaway notched his first assist as a Bruin on Nosek’s tying goal in the first while also registering a shot, hit, block, and a plus-1 rating in 10:47 time on ice. In his second game with the club, Orlov notched two assists and recorded a pair of hits in 19:17 time on ice — all while spending For a team who sits first in fewest goals per game and possesses the third-highest goals scored per tilt, the Bruins still managed to land a defensive upgrade with Orlov’s arrival.

Countdown to TradeCentre: Oilers in on Chychrun? (TSN)

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports Edmonton Oilers and Arizona Coyotes were progressing on Jakob Chychrun trade negotiations Monday before things cooled ...

I've been doing a good job of that so far and I expect to keep that up for the rest of the season." Ottawa remains five points back of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with four teams - the Buffalo Sabres, Red Wings, Florida Panthers and Washingto Capitals - sandwiched between them. “This group is trying to make the next step and we’ve made progress all year long. After it was reported last week the Red Wings planned to keep the 28-year-old winger, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports Detroit is now willing to once again listen on Bertuzzi in trade talks. There’s been a lot going on in the NHL world the last three of four days. Karlsson has 19 goals and 77 points in 60 games this season and his just five points from tying his carrer-high of 82 points set with the Ottawa Senators in 2015-16. San Jose is fourth-last in the NHL standings and traded their leading goal-scorer this season, Timo Meier, to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. "Yeah, it does [stink] that we're in the situation that we're in and we're not fighting for a playoff spot," Karlsson said. I don't know for sure, but at this time I'm anticipating him being here for the rest of the season." The 24-year-old has registered seven goals and 21 assists in 36 games this season, his seventh with the Coyotes. He is playing out the first season of a four-year, $25 million contract extension signed in 2021. TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun believes Gavrikov is "Plan C" for the Oilers, though likely the easiest to complete.

Oilers trade Puljujarvi to Hurricanes for Puistola (TSN)

The Edmonton Oilers have traded Jesse Puljujarvi to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Patrik Puistola.

In 317 career games, all with the Oilers, Puljujarvi has 51 goals and 112 points. He notes the $3 million in space could be used by Edmonton in another move prior to Friday's trade deadline. “Jesse possesses a great blend of size and skill, and he will add to the depth of our forward group,” Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said.

Mattias Ekholm to the Edmonton Oilers? Hmm. Interesting but risky (Edmonton Journal)

This in from TSN's Darren Dreger: “Interested to see how big/small Nashville's next trade will be. Sources say the Oilers and Preds continue discussions on…

Nashville might also be asked to retain salary, which would come at the cost of draft picks. Philip Broberg had excelled in his short time as a third-pairing left shot d-man but he’s had a few rough games in a row. It’s safe to say that Ekholm presents some risk to the Oilers given his age (he’ll be 33 in May), cap hit ($6.25 million per) and term (three more years on his deal after this season). And I’m going to warn you once again not to put any weight in the assessment of folks relying on publicly-available stats and a few viewing of the player in order to rate him just now. Mattias Ekholm to the Edmonton Oilers? Among the options Ken Holland is grinding away on with the deadline looming.”
