How to see the northern lights in the UK tonight (New Scientist)

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, were seen as far south as Cornwall in the UK on Sunday night, and are likely to be visible again on Monday night.

Most smartphone cameras will be able to pick up the green hues of the northern lights. The particles take around a day to travel to Earth, so we can predict up to a day in advance how strong the aurora is likely to be. The The most common are pale yellow and green from oxygen molecules around 120 to 180 kilometres up. According to the Northern Lights Centre, the bright dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere. Variations in colour are due to the type of gas particles that are colliding. The astronomical phenomena – scientifically known as the aurora borealis – originates from the sun and produces a colorful night sky display on Earth.

Parts of North America were also privy to the light display on Sunday night. Residents further north on the continent with access to clear skies will have the best chance at seeing the lights. As it does, it lights up particles in the sky that can make for a swirling, bright natural light show. [However, the cycle of the Sun means that we are entering into a particularly busy phase. That means there should be some chance to see the spectacle – though the reduced activity means that it will not come as far south as it has over recent nights. That means Tuesday is probably the last chance to see any of the northern lights – and it will not be visible right across the country in the way that it has been in recent days. The spectacle is particularly notable in that it requires no special equipment or knowledge to see – only relative darkness and a patience to wait for them to appear in the sky. Seeing the aurora borealis so far south is highly unusual, and was thanks to very clear skies.

I don’t seek out the northern lights specifically; I like hillwalking at night, so the aurora is an occasional companion when I’m out on the hills after dark. I have been fortunate enough to see the northern lights several times before in Finland and Norway, but to do so just 10 minutes from where I live was an incredible experience. The photo was taken on Sunday 26 February at 10.32pm. I have been going out to take photos of the aurora for years and this is one of the best displays I have seen. I’ve lived here for 20 years and have seen them most years, but this was one of the best and most colourful displays I have seen. It’s unheard of to see the aurora so far south, so it really did make the adventure (on a school night!) very worthwhile.
