Evaluating Blues' Return In Ivan Barbashev Trade, Zach Dean ... (FloHockey)

Prospect analyst Chris Peters breaks down the Blues-Golden Knights trade with a special focus on prospect Zach Dean who was traded for Ivan Barbashev.

Doug Armstrong has been wheeling and dealing and has a chance to rebuild a young core around a number of players already on the roster while also making significant strides over the next two drafts towards replenishing the prospect system that already includes a blue-chipper in Jimmy Snuggerud. I grade Dean as a solid B prospect, which is to say that he’ll certainly play NHL games and has a chance to round out into an impact player down the line, but more likely is a mid-tier player. He projects favorably into a middle-of-the-lineup role, potentially as a third-line center who provides scoring pop and a bit of jam. There is some upside there to suggest he could play a bigger role down the line, though. Dean was named to Canada’s World Junior Championship team and played a depth role while helping Canada win gold at the tournament. Since we’re focusing more on the prospects that are traded, here’s a look at what the Blues are getting in Zach Dean. The player movement continues ahead of the March 3 trade deadline in the NHL.

NHL trade grades: Golden Knights add Ivan Barbashev, Blues get ... (The Athletic)

The Golden Knights went out and paid the Blues a reasonable price for a decent depth forward.

Dean isn’t a flashy player, but he’s a good skater, he has some skill, he can shoot the puck well and he has a terrific motor. I can see him becoming a middle-six wing, but if he stays down the middle it would be more of a No. I don’t see Dean as a big scorer at higher levels, though, as I don’t think he’s an overly creative or instinctive player with the puck. They don’t show that the Blues bled chances and goals against with him on the ice, leading to earning just 45 percent of the expected goals and 50 percent of the actual goals — both well below the team average. In the grand scheme of things the price doesn’t really matter much here for Vegas, but it’s still a nice get for the Blues. He plays hard, he has very good skill and can play with pace. This feels of a type with [Winnipeg](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/win-jets/)’s move on Saturday and [Dallas’](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/stars/) on Sunday — a Western Conference contender trying to pull itself out of the pack with a minor addition to a position of need. The 30th pick in 2021 was ranked as the team’s third-best prospect according to No real notes — Dean has pedigree and seems to be on track to contribute at the NHL level. Now, we can see what — if anything — they manage to do with the rest of that $7-ish million in cap space. [Byron Froese](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/byron-froese-sfkfS6TQ1ZH8jdBH/), could certainly solve some of his defensive issues. He’s a left shot, too, which is another reason not to view him as a [Mark Stone](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/mark-stone-noyPNX8sO8H8G9aX/) replacement, but depth is depth.
