There has to be a lot more commitment to work,” said Bowness. What do you want a goalie to do there? The little plays, a little less is more in the sense that if you get a puck through the middle, we’ve just gotta get it in and grind them down a little bit. Coach Rick Bowness pulled Hellebuyck for just the second time this season, calling David Rittich out of the bullpen to play the third. There has to be a lot more emotion. We’ve got to steer the ship back in the right direction.” It just seems like on certain nights we look like a Stanley Cup contender. We’ve talked enough about it the last couple of games even before the road trip, of finding a way with three one-goal games we lose on that road trip. And then you come back and we know the importance of tonight. Why Winnipeg Jets' Nino Niederreiter addition is a strong start to ... (The Athletic)

Niederreiter is a great fit for the Jets and the team still has enough cap room to make more trades.

[needed a big response](https://theathletic.com/4250720/2023/02/25/winnipeg-jets-avalanche-loss-perfetti/) to Friday’s blowout loss to the [Avalanche](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/avalanche/). It also seems that true to their non-mercenary, non-Golden-Knights management style, the Jets have no interest in acquiring a player like Meier just to flip him come summertime if he won’t sign. [Nick Schmaltz](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/nick-schmaltz-HNbilvTAM0fTfVKR/) ($5.875 million, UFA 2026) could be squeezed in with the right demotions, as could [Adam Henrique](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/adam-henrique-uNfSLBW4GmDhsd3t/) ($5.825 million, UFA 2024.) I don’t think that these are automatically the players that Winnipeg is targeting but I hesitate to see a world in which the Jets leave their cap space unspent. I’ve seen [Colton Parayko](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/colton-parayko-mDSSuSPnaTEn6Gya/)’s name mentioned as another high-impact defenceman with term but the 29-year-old’s eight-year, $6.5 million AAV contract gives me pause. Just as importantly, the left-shooting Niederreiter is comfortable driving the puck to the net with a power move from the goal line: [acquired](https://theathletic.com/4251930/2023/02/25/nino-niederreiter-trade-jets-predators/) Niederreiter on Saturday for a second-round pick in the 2024 draft. [Jakob Chychrun](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/jakob-chychrun-mOpOXSetlCmRJ5tG/)’s name is here just to create hope — I don’t think there’s a likelihood of something like that happening — but he’s the sort of defenceman worth significant assets and the requisite roster surgery. Barbashev would be the most expensive of the three in terms of acquisition cost but all are reported to be available and won’t come for Meier-esque prices. He is a volume shooter, especially from the centre slot, and he’ll put himself through whatever punishment it takes to get multiple hacks and whacks at rebounds. You’ll hear him discussed as a play driver, meaning he has a positive impact on possession stats, but that doesn’t mean he’s a player who spends a ton of time with the puck on his stick. Niederreiter is under contract for this season and next at a cap hit of $4 million, meaning he’s not a pure rental. He gets to the low and centre slot time and time again, regardless of how much abuse he takes, and then he gets mad and gives those shots right back.

The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Winnipeg Jets, 5-1, on the road Friday night. Here are three takeaways from the victory.

The Avs didn’t allow a goal in the second or third periods after establishing a 4-1 lead in the first. The Avs are 3-for-25 on PP chances over their last nine games. What went wrong: Colorado gave up a goal early in the first period. “The more he’s involved in the defensive side of things, the better he is offensively,” coach Jared Bednar said earlier in the week. Then Bowen Byram skated into the slot and sent a rocket into goal. The Avalanche tallied four goals over the span of 11 minutes.
