Jets Acquire Nino Niederreiter From Predators (The Hockey Writers)

The Winnipeg Jets have strengthened their forward group, as they have acquired Nino Niederreiter from the Nashville Predators.

This is because they have acquired a very solid forward who fits exactly what they needed for the postseason. Meanwhile, the Predators have landed a 2024 second-round pick for a veteran winger who no longer fit into the team’s plans. Thus, he will a solid part of Winnipeg’s roster for next season, too, and that certainly helps this trade look even better for the Jets. [Mason Appleton](https://thehockeywriters.com/docs/mason-appleton/) on the first line due to his strong scoring ability. Nino Niederreiter trade grades: Jets get affordable offensive ... (CBSSports.com)

After a few years of toiling away in the middle of the NHL standings, it appears as though the Predators have decided to become a seller. That is good news for ...

The Predators have come to grips with reality, and the idea of them being a seller at the trade deadline should be music to the fans' ears. Niederreiter is a legitimate top-six winger with a strong track record of driving offense, and he's signed through the 2023-23 season on a team-friendly deal. The Jets aren't suddenly a Stanley Cup favorite with Niederreiter on the roster, but they are now an improved team in a wide open Western Conference, and they got a good deal in the process. Niederreiter was second on the Predators in goals with 18, and he is on pace for 26 this season. In a time when the NHL is operating with a relatively flat salary cap, finding value wherever it exists is invaluable. As a result of that skid, Winnipeg is in jeopardy of falling into a wild card spot after holding down a top-two spot in the Central Division for much of the season.

Transaction Niederreiter: un comparable pour Mike Hoffman? (DansLesCoulisses)

À quelques jours de la date limite des transactions, ça bouge énormément dans la LNH. Aujourd'hui, Vitali Kravtsov a finalement été échangé à Vancouver.

GM Chuck Fletcher: "He wanted to play, but just giving him a maintenance day. On donne de la job à plusieurs et bien rémunérée en plus. Malgré les apparences (sur papier), cette transaction n’est pas encourageante pour Kent Hughes. Les 32 équipes de la LNH prendraient Niederreiter avant Hoffman. Tonight is a b2b after a long trip.

What would offers for [Tanner Jeannot](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/tanner-jeannot-G7uMueTukdjRk9go/) look like? [Matt Duchene](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/matt-duchene-x1dNHl1vkIL872og/) replace Niederreiter as a Kane-Meier contingency plan? Niederreiter will fix that problem and make the Jets’ depth chart look a lot more like that of a top-tier contender. Winnipeg had kicked around on the periphery of the Meier discussions, and they made sense as an option there; if they didn’t have a contract extension in hand, they’d have likely been able to pick up his one-season qualifying offer for 2024-25 and tried to sell him on being a core piece of the next phase of the franchise. He’d have been a fallback plan for the losers in the dual But he is a nice addition who really strengthens the team’s top nine, creating more depth after the top six. In that span, his teams have earned an expected goal differential that’s 0.45 per 60 higher with Niederreiter on the ice, and an actual goal difference that’s higher by half-a-goal per 60. He’s not much of a passer, but he can put the puck in the net. Cap space remains the great equalizer in what remains a flat-cap world and even though Niederreiter is worth his $4 million cap hit, that’s still not a completely easy sum to swallow.

Why Winnipeg Jets' Nino Niederreiter addition is a strong start to ... (The Athletic)

Niederreiter is a great fit for the Jets and the team still has enough cap room to make more trades.

[needed a big response](https://theathletic.com/4250720/2023/02/25/winnipeg-jets-avalanche-loss-perfetti/) to Friday’s blowout loss to the [Avalanche](https://theathletic.com/nhl/team/avalanche/). It also seems that true to their non-mercenary, non-Golden-Knights management style, the Jets have no interest in acquiring a player like Meier just to flip him come summertime if he won’t sign. [Nick Schmaltz](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/nick-schmaltz-HNbilvTAM0fTfVKR/) ($5.875 million, UFA 2026) could be squeezed in with the right demotions, as could [Adam Henrique](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/adam-henrique-uNfSLBW4GmDhsd3t/) ($5.825 million, UFA 2024.) I don’t think that these are automatically the players that Winnipeg is targeting but I hesitate to see a world in which the Jets leave their cap space unspent. I’ve seen [Colton Parayko](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/colton-parayko-mDSSuSPnaTEn6Gya/)’s name mentioned as another high-impact defenceman with term but the 29-year-old’s eight-year, $6.5 million AAV contract gives me pause. Just as importantly, the left-shooting Niederreiter is comfortable driving the puck to the net with a power move from the goal line: [acquired](https://theathletic.com/4251930/2023/02/25/nino-niederreiter-trade-jets-predators/) Niederreiter on Saturday for a second-round pick in the 2024 draft. [Jakob Chychrun](https://theathletic.com/nhl/player/jakob-chychrun-mOpOXSetlCmRJ5tG/)’s name is here just to create hope — I don’t think there’s a likelihood of something like that happening — but he’s the sort of defenceman worth significant assets and the requisite roster surgery. Barbashev would be the most expensive of the three in terms of acquisition cost but all are reported to be available and won’t come for Meier-esque prices. He is a volume shooter, especially from the centre slot, and he’ll put himself through whatever punishment it takes to get multiple hacks and whacks at rebounds. You’ll hear him discussed as a play driver, meaning he has a positive impact on possession stats, but that doesn’t mean he’s a player who spends a ton of time with the puck on his stick. Niederreiter is under contract for this season and next at a cap hit of $4 million, meaning he’s not a pure rental. He gets to the low and centre slot time and time again, regardless of how much abuse he takes, and then he gets mad and gives those shots right back.

Jets Get Outstanding Value in Trade for Nino Niederreiter (The Hockey Writers)

If the Jets still want to make a splash for Jakob Chychrun or Timo Meier, they have the assets to do so and may use it as an opportunity to go all in. They have lost four of their last five games, and their one win came against the New York Rangers, in a game where Hellebuyck had to make 50 stops to will them to victory. The Jets are bolstering their chances at a Stanley Cup with the current core. The Swiss-born winger is on pace for 26 goals this season, and he joins a Jets forward group that desperately needed help. The 30-year-old winger is a former fifth overall pick of the 2010 NHL Draft and has scored over 20 goals in five different seasons, including 2021-22 when he scored 24 goals for the Carolina Hurricanes. Niederreiter is a middle-six winger that has a solid combination of skill and size, which he leverages in high-danger areas of the ice.
