Edmonton sits three back of the Vegas Golden Knights for the division lead, with Vegas holding one game at hand. For games further into the future, the model scores are regressed to the mean to account for uncertainty.” They’ve got a 61.3% shot at advancing to the second round, and 23.5% odds of making the Stanley Cup Final. That makes Edmonton the West’s best, and Canada’s top choice to bring the Cup north for the first time since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, in the midst of a career year, is tied for ninth in league scoring with 72 points (28 goals, 44 assists), too. “Each game is simulated using the probabilities from the pre-game prediction model discussed below.

MATHESON: Oilers GM Ken Holland says he's working the phones (Edmonton Sun)

As Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland continues to make a flood of calls, presumably for another defenceman before the March 3 trade deadline ...

“Cancer doesn’t quit, and these kids won’t quit either.” No stops in play from noon March 3 to 6 pm March 5. Brent Saik’s wonderful hockey spread in Sherwood Park, will be host to the Kids World Longest Hockey Game from March 3-5 in support of the Ben Stelter Fund and the Stollery Children’s Hospital. We kept (Brett) Kulak and Evander Kane. Who knows what will happen? It has become an arms race in the Eastern Conference with the top teams — Boston trading for Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway on Thursday, Toronto for Ryan O’Reilly before that, the Rangers for Vladimir Tarasenko and also looking at adding Patrick Kane to round out a dynamite top six. For Gavrikov or anybody else? For Karlsson, yes. No, I don’t. In that stretch they are 11-1-5, so they have picked up 27 of 34 points. “I don’t think you can base decisions on one game,” said Holland. Article content

Oilers D-men: Passing and Shooting (Oilers Nation)

The Edmonton Oilers have performed very well in 2023. They are tied fo...

Here are the numbers for controlled exits and entries for the Oilers. He is young, he will learn from it and I won’t be surprised to see him back around 45% next season. Last year Nurse was at 46.5%, Bouchard at 45.6%, Barrie was at 45.3% and Ceci was at 44.4%. He is on pace for 157 shots on goal this year. When he’s on he is good at getting the shot past the forward. In the long term, it would help the Oilers to have a more efficient right-shot passer paired with Nurse. Interesting to note how many fans repeat how Nurse can’t pass and Bouchard is very good, yet Nurse is higher in outlet passing and only 0.86% lower in stretch passes. They are received in the neutral zone after the red line. He is being asked to play top-pair minutes, and he isn’t a top-pair defender. He still has those qualities in his game, but he’s going through a tough stretch in his sophomore season. He has a great shot, and last season he was much better at getting his shot on goal and moving the puck effectively. Specifically, their passing, shooting and transporting of the puck.

Oilers GM Ken Holland may want a major trade but faces serious ... (Edmonton Journal)

It's tough being a General Manager in the National Hockey League. Consider the case of Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland, a veteran of 26 years on the job.

Never mind that the direct trade of just draft assets and futures leaves a major headache as to how to fit any incoming players under the vice grip of salary cap constraints. Which doesn’t mean that there is nothing worthwhile to sell; developing players like Dylan Holloway (untouchable in the eyes of some), Xavier Bourgault, Reid Schaefer, and the emerging Raphael Lavoie top a list that includes depth prospects Ty Tullio, Carter Savoie, Noah Philp, Michael Kesselring, Philip Kemp, Olivier Rodrigue and more. While Holland still has more than enough high picks remaining to make trades, the fact is he is starting from a deficit position. Edmonton is shy at least 1 pick in each of the next 3 drafts. Lots and lots of material out there on the interweb about possible trade targets. All of the draft picks dealt in the various deals remain lost and gone forever. The B’s gave up a single roster piece, Craig Smith, a solid but expensive veteran forward, to make the dollars work while clearly upgrading their powerhouse team. Given the roughly 250 trade targets I’ve read about to this point, I have no worries the shelves will be quite that empty come next Friday. And yet there are many observers of the team growing increasingly agitated at Holland’s lack of visible progress in the trade market, which after all is merely a week away now. But with the singular exception of save percentage, we see a constant refrain of “1st in West” or “2nd in West”. These outcomes are not out of sync with their on-ice performance for the most part. It’s tough being a General Manager in the National Hockey League.
