Flames vs Coyotes Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: February 22 (Winnipeg Sun)

The Calgary Flames travel to meet the Arizona Coyotes at Mullett Arena Wednesday night.

To emphasize the Flames scoring even more, the Over is a perfect 5-0 in the past five games when Calgary’s opponent allows two or fewer goals in its previous game. Calgary has also lit the lamp three or more times in 13 of the past 18 games. However, the home side has won nine of the past 11 in this series. In addition, Calgary has lost five in a row against losing teams, while going just 2-7 in the past nine games against Central Division foes. It also failed to cover on the PL as a huge favorite (-328) in the first meeting with Arizona at the Scotiabank Saddledome on December 5. Like the Coyotes, the Flames have played a lot of close games lately. Arizona will counter with Karel Vejmelka (15-17-5, 3.31 GAA, .904 SV%, 3 SO), and he is confirmed to start. Coincidentally, the first time these teams met, we had a one-goal game. With so many games going into the extra frame or beyond, it has resulted in seven of the Yotes last eight games decided by a single tally. Calgary squandered a golden opportunity in its most recent three-game homestand, going 1-2 with an overtime win against the New York Rangers on Saturday night. Calgary won the first meeting in Alberta by a 3-2 score on December 5. The Coyotes have made it interesting, win or lose lately.

Why Flames GM Treliving could be one to watch at 2023 trade ... (Sportsnet.ca)

The Calgary Flames are in the playoff hunt, but are currently on the outside looking in. So what will GM Brad Treliving do? Sonny Sachdeva looks at the GM's ...

If they can, perhaps that gives Calgary's offence enough of a boost to begin climbing the standings. In this case, it was the winger's connection to Lindholm (his cousin) and Jacob Markstrom, the trio having grown up together in Gavle, Sweden. Much of that squad has remained in place, aside from the two key pieces up front, with Huberdeau and Kadri essentially replacing Gaudreau and Tkachuk. The Flames GM identified his man and went out and got him, a move that's still paying off, with Toffoli currently leading the club in both points and goals. This time last year, the Flames were all in on a deep playoff run, the club sitting first in its division and an off-season of potential changes looming. And in Jarnkrok's addition specifically, Treliving again showed a preference to add players who have an extra layer of connection with the club, something that could potentially lead to an ideal fit and a greater impact. In 2021, the Flames found themselves on the other side of the line. Toffoli was coming off a dominant year that had seen him put up 28 goals in 52 games, and play a key role in Montreal’s march to the Cup Final. While Treliving tends to do much of his dealing in the off-season, he's been known to make waves on deadline day, too. [32 Thoughts column](https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/32-thoughts-the-latest-on-jakob-chychrun-and-the-nhl-trade-market/) that Calgary is on the hunt for a winger to help out Huberdeau. Take a look back through the GM's history and he's shown he has no qualms with working the trade market to shake up his squad. The question is whether Treliving opts to stand pat, or whether he feels his club has enough potential for a meaningful run if everything begins to fall into place.

The Calgary Flames were the better team for much of their Wednesday night visit to Mullett Arena to play the Arizona Coyotes. They out-shot the Coyotes handily ...

The Flames continued to press, and retook the lead with two goals scored 24 seconds apart. His back-hand shot eluded Vejmelka’s glove and gave the Flames a 5-3 lead. The Flames were all over the Coyotes for awhile early in the game, and in the second, but they couldn’t extend their lead. The Flames tied things back up slightly later, as Tyler Toffoli made a great read, firing the puck between a defender’s legs. But rather than roll over, the Flames battled back with two goals scored 62 seconds apart. First, the Flames had a power play that got some looks but couldn’t bury any of them. The Coyotes pulled ahead in the second period with two goals in the span of 1:35. The Coyotes fired the puck on net and Tanev, trying to sweep the rebound away from the net, inadvertently swept it into the net. Tyler Toffoli rang a shot off the crossbar. Lucic’s shot beat Karel Vejmelka to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Calgary Flames were the better team for much of their Wednesday night visit to Mullett Arena to play the Arizona Coyotes. Duehr cut to the net, then passed to Milan Lucic in the slot.

While magic has followed the Arizona Coyotes recently, but the effects wore off Wednesday night at Mullett Arena against the Calgary Flames.

With just seven defensemen in the game, the Coyotes took another blow to the depth when Josh Brown exited during the game with an upper body injury. “After that, he’s human and (the shots) were coming from a little bit of everywhere. Vejmelka had a rough start to the third period when he was knocked down by both Coyotes defenseman J.J. A blunder from Tanev at the net was what gave Keller his 24th goal when the puck deflected off him and Tanev knocked it in at 9:31. Tyler Toffoli’s miss off the post in the Coyotes zone trickled over to Matias Maccelli. We cannot focus on the end result, we are capable of being better than we are lately.”

With Flames on playoff bubble, GM Treliving in tricky spot as trade ... (Calgary Sun)

On Wednesday, the Flames were sitting in ninth in the Western Conference standings, four points back of a playoff spot.

It’s just, right near the end, it gets real busy.” But it’s sort of the finishing at both nets.” The counterargument, of course, is that the right acquisition could be a game-changer in their push for a playoff spot — and from there, the Western Conference feels wide open. Going back to training camp, it’s no secret that the Flames were angling to add a forward, specifically a capable lamp-lighter. I think we’re prepared for all the different scenarios and we’ll just continue to have discussions and monitor. Around this time of year, Treliving always stresses that you “take your cues from your team.” With deadline-day just over a week away, the annual trade buzzer set to sound next Friday at 1 p.m. You get a pretty good sense of what everybody is doing. It will be a sigh-of-relief for many fans to hear that Treliving told Postmedia before departing for Arizona: “I haven’t given much thought to moving a first-round pick right now.” Or perhaps leaving his wheeling-and-dealing-mobile in park. Based on where his team is at, Treliving might wind up in that trading traffic jam. “My philosophy at the deadline has always been the same, where if you are looking to add, you’d like to do it a little sooner rather than later,” Treliving said. The Flames’ destiny is in their own hands; with two more games against the Wild this season, these are absolutely must-win games. This model has favoured the Flames for the whole season, and is just now starting to drop them down the projected standings. They list the Flames at just 39% to make the playoffs, and the Wild at 72%. They give the Flames a 50% chance of making the playoffs, one of the more favourable figures out there. The Wild are at 71% and likely higher with their win last night over the Kings. However, take this with a sizeable grain of salt; MoneyPuck has the Wild at 72%, currently the ninth best odds in the West.

The Coyotes had points going in 9 straight games before the game against the Flames, taking care of business to this level against them was what you like to see in terms of compete level. The entire roster finished on the positive side of the shot attempt battle – something you could sense brewing as early as the first period. Speed on the wing in this game is a prime ingredient in most champions – it overwhelms the opposition defence when the winger gets in on the forecheck swiftly. You always get it from the Backlund (82.37% // 66.76%) line, it’s really nice to see it from every single other one too. The show will be live on When the Coyotes only get 14 shots on net having it be this one sided isn’t really a surprise. Weegar (77.61%) and Tanev (76.30%) have had their fair share as the top two defenceman here, but this is the first time playing on separate pairings. A tremendous sign as the Flames top 4 excelled in this match. They get an invigoration of energy from the rookies in the lineup and drive themselves back to victory. Corsi King – Mikael Backlund (84.65%) continues to feast upon any team that is in the Bedard sweepstakes. The Flames wingers were relentless in pursuit of the puck tonight no matter where it was on the ice. From the drop of the puck Calgary dominated possession of the puck and barely let any chances come back their way.

The Calgary Flames should get creative with their cap space ahead ... (The Win Column)

Assessing how the Calgary Flames can use their cap space to acquire draft picks at the upcoming 2023 NHL Trade Deadline.

He has a cap hit of 3.1M, and Boston is looking to incentivize a team to take his cap, so they can make a move for Gavrikov. If the Flames want to salvage some draft capital, getting creative in helping other teams with their cap troubles is a great way to do so. They could then play him for the rest of 2022–23 before he becomes an unrestricted free agent, or retain 50% on his contract and ship him out to a contender for another draft pick. The Flames could also simply take on another team’s bad contract, like Craig Smith in Boston. We saw this in play with the Flames in the summer, where they had to attach a first-round draft pick to How funny would it be if the Flames acted as a third party in a Monahan deal? So, the Flames could acquire Smith and his $3.1M cap hit, and a draft pick for doing so. Teams are getting more and more creative with how they manage cap space, so let’s look at some ways the Flames can get in the action. Now, they buy a 2025 fourth-rounder, so they not only replace the pick they gave up for Reaves, but also move up a round. We saw this in action this week, when the Minnesota Wild ate $1.875M of Ryan O’Reilly’s salary in exchange for a 2025 fourth-rounder. In fact, a decent amount of the fanbase has now turned their attention to [selling at the deadline](https://thewincolumn.ca/2023/02/21/the-flames-should-sell-their-pending-ufas-ahead-of-the-2022-23-nhl-trade-deadline/), in an attempt to salvage some assets used in last year’s acquisitions. Yesterday, we saw the Chicago Blackhawks take on Nikita Zaitsev and his $4.5M cap hit for this year and next, in exchange for a 2023 second-round, and a 2026 fourth-round pick.

Flames GM Brad Treliving wants to see how his team performs before making any roster moves by the trade deadline.

Given Schenn’s age and role (a third pair guy on a contending team) it may be more realistic for Treliving to get him locked up before the end of the season. Louis Blues left wing Ivan Barbashev, for example, is a name that would fit the script as to what the Flames are looking for. FLAMES FALL IN OT (NHL.com)

Golden Knights erase third-period deficit to edge Flames 4-3.

Marchessault took a third minor late in the frame and the Flames added a couple more shots to their total, but a successful kill seemed to breathe new life into the homeside. The Flames opened up a two-goal advantage only 1:24 into the second, thanks to Calgary's very own 'French Connection' of Pelletier and Huberdeau. "I thought we played really well in the first ... With Shea Theodore off serving holding infraction, Pelletier banged home a loose puck to score his third of the season and second in as many games. The Flames were playing a nearly 'perfect' road game, until a questionable goaltender interference penalty was levied on Walker Duehr. But if you want to make the playoffs, we need these points." "We had a lot of shots in the first, created some chances. The Flames got caught on a bad change in OT and Jack Eichel took full advantage, re-grouping in the neutral zone before setting up Jonathan Marchessault for a clean look off the rush. We've got to keep playing and score the fourth goal so we get a bigger lead. Obviously, you're going to be a bit tired in the third. But in the third, we had, what, one shot? But the Golden Knights rallied with a pair in the third period before Alex Pietrangelo struck less than a minute into overtime, giving the hometown team a 4-3 victory on Thursday at T-Mobile Arena.

The Calgary Flames blow a 3-1 lead, fall to the Vegas Golden Knights in tough Overtime loss at T-Mobile Arena.

After Thursday’s heartbreaker, the Flames are now sitting nine points behind the Golden Knights in Pacific Division standings. “I think we had a really good start, dug in, and I think fatigue caught up with us a little bit,” Sutter told reporters at T-Mobile Arena. In the first minute of sudden-death, Jonathan Marchessault sizzled a shot off the post and Alex Pietrangelo arrived to clean up the leftovers. He added an assist in the early stages of the second. The kid must have received that message. “He is relentless on the puck. For the recent call-up, it was his second multi-point showing in as many nights. “If you want to win here, you have to play for 60 minutes,” Flames rookie forward Jakob Pelletier told reporters at T-Mobile Arena. In fact, this was as close as they’ve ever come to nabbing a victory. You could blame some sort of curse. For the Flames, a five-year funk continues. Article content

That means we stepped back and let these guys come at us and try to defend and hope we’ll end up with an empty net. We have to be more offensive in the third, even when we have the lead.
