A winter storm stretching 2600 miles is forecast to to hit states from the West to the East Coast on Wednesday.

The snowfall is expected to arrive late on Wednesday and continue until Thursday, affecting areas that include parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York. Over a foot of snow is forecast from South Dakota through parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. More than 1,300 flights were canceled and more than 1,900 were delayed early in the day, according to the tracking service FlightAware. Snow is expected across low elevations “all the way from the Oregon border to the Mexican border,” he said, forecasting that many Californians will be able to see snow on the nearby hills on Friday morning. Areas along the coast and valleys could see a few inches of rain. Swain said that the weather will escalate on Thursday and Friday, when colder air moves in over the state. But forecasters say a blizzard isn’t unheard-of in the region.

As a storm brings heavy snow to parts of the northern U.S. this week, some southern cities will see record-high temperatures.

"It will be a long-lasting winter storm with extreme impacts stretching more or less from the West Coast to the East Coast," Chris Warren, a meteorologist and co-host at The Weather Channel, told CBS News in an email.
