These tiny crustaceans form the base of the food web in the Southern Ocean as favorite prey for penguins, whales, and squid. “There are rules that krill fishing should not be carried out in close proximity to whales or any other feeding animals. This study showed us that at least these four vessels do not adhere to this rule,” she says. “This was quite shocking to witness.” Around one million of these colossal cetaceans once plied the world’s oceans, but a century of whaling reduced their numbers by roughly 98 percent. Whaling bans and fishing regulations have allowed humpback whales to balloon from around 400 individuals in the 1980s to more than 80,000 today – a dramatic recovery, but still shy of their numbers before whaling. Protestors have recently called on New Jersey government leaders to halt the expansion of offshore wind until more research can be done into potential links between underwater noise and whale deaths. Of the five species washed up in recent months, three are considered vulnerable or endangered: North Atlantic right whales, sperm whales and sei whales. The death of two right whales within weeks of each other was an especially concerning blow to the species. In the past three months, nearly two dozen large whales have washed ashore on beaches on the east coast of the US. “It’s an alarming surge,” says [Sheila Dean](https://mmsc.org/meet-our-pod) at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in New Jersey.
Recent years have seen record West Coast whale deaths, with the notable exception of 2020, when the pandemic all but stopped international shipping.
Whale Safe is hoping to change that. It's a tragic, tragic accident," she said. On the West Coast, the new system is called Whale Safe. Whale Safe is now naming and shaming shipping companies and cruise ships that don't slow down, assigning them letter grades. Spotted hundreds of times during her life, scientists even gave her a name: Fran.

“It’s time to take ownership of the path that I started off [on] all of those years ago in the West End,” the actor says. “I knew this was a story I wanted to tell because I felt he was an amalgamation of all my favorite people in my life—mentors, friends, teachers.” Back then, Fraser concedes, “I never imagined putting myself in a position to be in films that are awarded or put on pedestals…. Fraser is that guy we missed even though he wasn’t ever really gone; he’s the same as he’s always been, but different because of the days in between. “It’s safe to say everybody knows a Charlie, if they don’t inhabit an aspect of him themselves,” he says. “I thought I was done [when it came to] everyone’s perception of me,” Fraser says. “That reoriented all of my priorities,” he says of becoming a father. When anyone asks the well-worn question, “Where have you been?” Fraser tells them he was never that far away, and that's true. These days, Fraser has replaced photography with what he calls his “pinch-me pages”—a collection of screenshots showcasing the praise he’s received for his latest film, “The Whale.” In Darren Aronofsky and Samuel D. “I still feel an affinity for this town, especially at this time of year, because it’s when I arrived 32 years ago,” the actor says. I guarantee you, the audience who comes to see ‘The Whale’ already has a preconceived notion about it.” I wanted to capture something I could have and hold, that could be taken spontaneously.”

To understand what these lessons were, I needed to take a closer look at the resurgence of humpback whales in the North Pacific. But now they had whales, and a fleet of boats quickly assembled to take advantage of the bonanza. Biuw told me of a recent expedition to the Antarctic to measure krill abundance. “When we came close to the South Orkney Islands, we started seeing a huge number of birds, albatrosses, and all kinds of things, and we realized something dramatic was going on. The scarcity of whales had not always been the case. I took a sip and waited for the scientist who had promised to share with me the basics of whale recovery. Biuw is a senior scientist at the Institute of Marine Research in Tromsø. “That spinning of the propeller creates bubbles, and the cavitation is really loud.” The whales have learned to associate this sound with food. The longlines are laid on the ocean floor at the edge of the continental shelf at a depth of about six hundred meters. Hundreds of baited hooks connect to the line via a six-foot piece of nylon known as a “snood.” At each end of the longline is an anchor that keeps it attached to the ocean floor and a stretch of rope that hangs vertically from a buoy at the surface. At 10:00 a.m., Lauren Wild let me into the rectangular university building and took me to a small cluster of offices in its depths that house the marine scientists. A new time-lapse video shows Brendan Fraser's extreme makeup and prosthetics transformation for his role as Charlie in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale.
While it's unclear how the next few years of Fraser's career will unfold beyond an appearance in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, The Whale clearly demonstrates that the actor is still more capable than ever of delivering an outstanding performance. As Charlie attempts to repair his relationship with Ellie and especially during some of the film's more emotional moments, Fraser's prosthetics and makeup really melt away and almost become invisible.
