Ucluelet Secondary School artist Koyah Morgan says her design was inspired by Indigenous culture.

There are not very many of us,” said Morgan, who is also the president of the high school Surfrider Club and a youth art instructor. She’s been able to give me so many opportunities to be around my culture and my language even though I don’t really live out in Macoah. For me, it feels really good to be an Indigenous artist that won this competition because our nation is so, so small. About 40 members live out in Macoah, which is accessible off Highway 4 along Kennedy Lake. It’s super important for us just to remember that we are literally carrying the hearts of other people in our hands all of the time and it’s up to use to decide what to do with that. Our hearts are very sacred.

The collective act that inspired Pink Shirt Day reminds us that bullies are rendered powerless in the face of compassion. For some institutions and communities, Pink Shirt Day is an opportunity to address bullying motivated by homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia.

She added how post-pandemic, people have a better appreciation of how important social emotional learning is, and how much relationships were affected when people weren’t able to gather together, and the positive difference it makes when we’re all together. If you feel safe, and comfortable, and valued, and liked, then you have a better capacity to learn.” “At the front of our school, we have a mural of the reasons why kids love Ellerslie Elementary, and it ties into ‘People are kind’, ‘People care about me’, we try to tie the themes in through activities that are being carried on throughout the school,” said Principal Jason Cormier. “When I think about the fact that if kids learn how to be kind to each other, and receive that from other people, they’re going to have healthier relationships, and you can’t underestimate the power of healthy relationships and the ripple effect it has on a school,” she said. Two Grade 12 students then purchased 50 pink shirts and handed them out to wear as a show of support to the boy.
