We’re also seeing many household-named retail chains jump on the protein-rich pancake action, with social media again helping to amplify their popularity. There was also strong growth across the retailer’s free-range eggs, with sales of Co-op Large Free-Range Eggs up 9.9 percent and its Organic Eggs nearly trebled, up 170 percent compared to previous years. Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is a tradition that dates back centuries and is celebrated in many countries around the world. Shrove Tuesday was originally a day where households would use up the eggs and fats in their homes before Lent. Pancake Day was once the often-forgotten celebratory day of everything pancake. Jumping forward to the present day retailers would have been preparing for consumer demand.

The ultimate Pancake Day recipe to try at home (HELLO!)

Ingredients (makes 10-15 crepes):. Half a litre of milk; 250g flour; A pinch of salt; 4 eggs; 2 tbsp olive oil; 1 or 2 tbsp water.

The small British town of Olney holds their 578th annual pancake race.

On Pancake day in 1978, a race took place in the village of Stapleford, Hertfordshire. Since 1950, the two towns have competed in a transatlantic pancake race, recording their times and holding an international video call to present prizes and awards. The other rules are that runners must carry a frying pan from start to finish and BYOP (bring your own pancake), flipping their pancake in the pan along the 380-metre course. There are a few rules in the modern pancake race that all competitors must follow. When she heard the church bells ringing, she raced through the town to church, carrying a pancake, just in time to make the service. Since then, thousands of pancake lovers and runners partake in the 380-metre race each year on Feb.

With around 60% of fires at home starting in the kitchen, the London Fire Brigade is reminding people how they can stay safe on Shrove Tuesday.

“Pan fires can be particularly dangerous and can spread out of control very quickly, especially when using oil. So far in 2023, firefighters have attended at least 227 cooking-related fires across the capital, causing 19 injuries including eight that were serious. Assistant Commissioner Pugsley added: “With cooking still one of the top causes of fires in the home, it’s unsurprising that you’re most at risk of fire between 7pm and 8pm in the evening.
